Smokers Suck
Do you smoke? Do you hate smokers?

I know it’s pretty far away I know, but anyone who’s not busy September 19, should head over to the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth Street at 7 PM. There’s a workshop talking about the possible smoking ban here in DeKalb. Myself, I hate smokers, so I'd like to see this go through. Anyways come support it, or fight it, your choice.

More info about this is available here: Smoking Ban

Hey, you don't even need to smoke to be cool if you go to a place where they allow smoking :)

Secondhand smoke yields secondhand coolness!

From a business standpoint, if it was profitable to ban smoking in bars/resturaunts... there'd already be a place that did it... people tend to smoke when they drink (even when they don't already smoke)... sadly, the only way it seems to avoid this is either...

1.) Bend the majority to your will or...
2.) Don't go to bars.

... I tend toward the 2nd one just because I don't really like the atmosphere anyway.

Resturaunts, well, that can be a different story. If a shot tastes a little like smoke because of atmosphere, well, no one really cares (if you are drinking 50 year old scotch at a college-town bar, well... its like real estate, location location location!) ... but sitting in the smoking section by chain smokers can alter the taste of food to those not used to it... and places like The Junction, sitting in the non-smoking section isn't much different, I think... but it is that resturaunt's CHOICE to allow smoking, just as it is our choice to go to it.

(shrug)

I think a ban on smoking violates the rights of the business owners to cater to who they want to cater to. Those who are offended by smoke vs. those who smoke... if they want to cater to the latter, I don't think they should be denied that choice... just as we shouldn't be forced to eat at a resturaunt.

I do agree that it should be the right of the store. I do smoke once in awhile, but absolutely never in a restaurant. In a bar it's another story.

Even though this covers restaurants and bars.. I really believe it originated from just restaurants. What kind of bugs me about this ban is.. did anyone see the people working for the ban at Cornfest? Without being offensive.. it's very obvious not a single one of those people (that I saw when I was at the fest) were the type of people that go to bars.

hmm exactly! If they're that sensitive about the faint smell of smoke lingering into their non-smoking section, then they should just not eat there! There are plenty of restaurants with either all non smoking, or much better divided sections.

fuck that shit man. all the non smokers think they should have shit their way when it comes to cigarettes and public places. that's bogus. i'm gonna go to dennys, order my coffee, & smoke my cigarettes. we have smoking and non-smoking sections for a reason. so that whiney little bitches can moan about how 'it still smells like smoke over here.' i say it's all bullshit. when i was a non-smoker, the smell didn't bother me any. it didn't make we want to throw up or anything. at the most, it was something i could do without. if people that didn't like smokers had it their way, we'd be using separate drinking fountains. they're far too sensitive about shit. probably the kind of people that call the police as soon as they see 3 or 4 teenagers walking down their block. maybe i'm over reacting, but these people really piss me off.

I agree with you, less passionately though. I don't smoke, but until most of my friends have started to quit, I was the one sitting in the smoking section in the restaurant with them for hours while they smoked. It just doesn't bother me. I mean, I don't want to expose myself to too much secondhand smoke, and I also don't like seeing people I care about doing something self-destructive....... but it's their choice. Restaurants like Dennys and the Junction would lose a ton of business if they were forced to ban smoking. I dislike those whiney people too, sure the sections aren't super well separated, but a faint smell of smoke isn't a big deal, they just want something to bitch about and that's annoying.
It wouldn't really affect me personally if there were a ban on smoking, but the principle of it would annoy me.

I can see both sides of this, but maybe there is another question to this. Should the employees have there health degraded because of someone elses choice to smoke? This is not a "it only affects the person doing it" thing. Second hand smoke is as bad/if not worse than first hand. Some one looking to support themselves through college by working at a resturant may very well end up with lung cancer in there later years. What if that person wasn't a smoker? yeah sure she could get another job, anyone know how hard it is to find a well paying job here when the college kids are in town? most people take what they can get to get them through. Anyway, the no smoking ban will not affect the business i work in, if anything it will help us. And no i don't smoke, so i don't know what it's like to go without one for the hour it takes to eat.....I do know what kind of residue it leaves on windows, and wouldn't want that in my lungs though.

I've been hearing a lot of mixed opinions on the dangers of second hand smoke. I find it very, very hard to believe it could be worse than actually smoking - but I'm no expert on the subject. Anyway, do you have a link to a study or anything that explains it?

A business should be able to regulate what it does in reference to smoking.

This whole "whats right\moral" crap needs to end. Whats next, should drinking be banned cuz thats harmful in situations?

People choose to smoke, its not brainwashing and truth comercials just inspire people to smoke even more

Why not begin banning people from smokin on the sidewalk, or not turning off your engine at stoplights to prevent co2 buildup will result in a fine.

Finally, anyone who broke my cig or doused it cuz i was simply smoking it will either buy me a new pack or end up in some form of petty claims court cuz i have alot of time, hope you do too

A note, an end to smoking at bars\establishments isnt gonna greatly kill lung cancer, u still have the concept of all the crap in the current outside air, hell on a hot day the air is "BAD" for u in chicago.

another point i made on my own website about this topic was: One of the many arguments is the business should be able to choose weather or not they will allow smoking indoors, however, they aren’t going to allow the smoking for the non-smokers obviously, so what right do the non-smokers have? I agree they should have a right to choose, but are businesses also aloud to have asbestos out in the open in the bar too? It is the same idea: they are both proven to cause cancer.

Taking smoking away from the smokers, what right do the smokers then have. Smokers have gone from the entire room to now a section and now to total elimination? There are worse causes of air pollution than cigarette smoking and you drive it.

i think the needs of petty little non-smokers have been met already. what happened to all the dorms at NIU? yeah, they went non-smoking the year i got there. i was looking forward to being able to smoke inside. unlike at home, i gotta get my ass outside if i want a cig. rain or shine, hot or cold. so smoking inside was gonna be a sweet deal. i sign up for a smoking floor. and what happened? whats wrong with putting all the people that want to smoke and don't care about second hand smoke together? i figgured, hell, i signed up for smoking, so i'm atleast entitled to smoke a cig or two a day in my room. i know which box i checked on my housing thing. and it all probably comes back to some whiney little shit who had nothing better to do with his time. get over second hand smoke. if that's what ends up killing you, then maybe you should've thought more about where you spent your life. and maybe even consider yourself lucky. i can think of countless deaths that would suck a lot more. and those asshole smokers you talk about, the ones that blow smoke in your face, they probably do it because YOU said some stupid shit about their smoking. and you were hoping they'd hear you too. well, that puff of smoke you're sitting in is well deserved. enjoy broncho mother fuckers.

Heh, why not begin a crusade against anyone deemed obese because its unhealthy and potentionally dangerous to other people due to their size. Take up more room and such. No one over 20lbs their weight not allowed to enter a bar or resturant place, guess i better start workin out harder then

Yeah, I mean I definitely think it's the resaurant's call. If people don't like smoke, then they should just try to avoid it. My suitemate is allergic to smoke but even she is just kidna like "meh whatever" about it. I can see it from both sides because I used to be a smoker but my boyfriend hates it but he deals with it. I dont really know.. I think a lot of smokers would be real upset with a smoking ban.

You're absolutely right about smokers being upset if their habit was banned, but so would many nonsmokers. Once something is banned, people have this crazy tendency to want to do it more and more, and feel obligated to stick it to the system by breaking these petty rules. It's the "desiring the unobtainable" principle at work. I think we'd see wholesale boycotts of certain restaurants (because college students love causes), as well as "we allow smoking" becoming a selling point or feature for others to attract business with.

How allergic to smoke is your suitemate? Hives or asthma reactions?
