what kind of materials do you have at work that let you do this?

i work in a graphics shop. we do custom boat graphics and signs in vinyl. so its basically like the skins that you would buy online, except i drew it up on the computer myself

You should seriously whip a few of those up and sell 'em. $10 including shipping and you'd make a ton of money.

Except that they're using copywrited materials and can be sued if they sold them. :P

i was thinking about putting something on the screen, but that would have taken more time (i only spent an hour designing the thing) and i was actually lucky to remember a good website called "best brands of the world" where i found eps files for the actual "gameboy" logo.

As someone who's wanted to make his own skins for the DS, is there any way to do this sort of thing without professional equipment... and if so, how?

Yours looks awesome, by the way.

If he didn't go for a profit it wouldn't matter. Honestly, even in this case, Nintendo would send a cease-and-desist letter, if anything. They'd not just randomly sue him. It would go over horribly.

That has to be the nicest DS skin I've ever seen.

even if i did want to make them for sale.. it would be a pain in the ass because A. my boss would be pissed when she finds out im working on something like this on the clock with her materials. and B. it has like 3 layers of color vinyl on the thing.. and theres no way in hell any of you guys would be able to put one of these things on without some serious bubbles forming. not to mention the fact that i wrapped the edges and i would either have to write a little tutorial on how to do that properly, or i would have to exactly measure the flat top surface so that the skin would not wrap at all.

at any rate, it wouldnt be worth the time and effort for the work.

your best bet if you wanted something really custom like this is to go to sign shop. and see how much they would charge to do something like this. (probably more then youre willing to pay) alot of places like that will charge for design time, so if you have any adobe illustrator skills, that might make things easier (or cheaper). a good sign shop should also be able to print jpegs right onto the vinyl as well.. but that sometimes doesnt look so hot. vector art work will always look the cleanest.
