 | 06:02 pm - Curious I was wondering how the citizens of New Orleans feel about tourists and/or people who decide to move to the city. Where I'm from, newcomers and tourists are generally unwelcome, but this is a considerably smaller city and most of the people who move here are yuppies from California. I was just wondering if anyone would be willing to share their views about this and maybe some things about the city in general. I'm planning on visiting soon and I was just curious.

 | 10:05 am Amen, poppy! Sometimes I browse through that tabloids in line at the grocery store and I am always disgusted when they talk about how certain celebrities are flaunting their "curves". Then they show a bunch of super skinny people and I think "what curves?!" I think Kristy Alley looks just fine how she is. It have seen old articles about how she loves food and spending time with her kids and just let herself go. Well good for you! Sounds like bliss to me. I guess we don't know anything. We should be trying the next fad diet and hoping that we can count our ribs between our breasts because that is what is "sexy"

 | 08:05 am - Green Goddess It sounds like you are making amazing progress on the restaurant so far in spite of the lackadaisical response times from banks and other such people. How exciting that marrus is working on the design for your sign--that guarantees something extraordinary! I hope the power is back on for your meeting. Boy, talk about timing.
We are especially looking forward to poring over the website when it goes up; be assured of many hits from us while we wait for our next trip down (we have a place booked for October)! Current Mood: excited

We are so happy for you and very excited to know the next time we are able to visit New Orleans we will have The Green Goddess to look forward to!(both Debra & I LOVED that dressing growing up!) We look forward to further posts about menu, decor and anything else you care to share (pictures? *hopeful*).

 | 10:39 am - Regarding your post -->Melting Away How distressing it must have been to go to that place you love so much and find it irreparably damaged; it's like a grinding nightmare you can't wake up from. Your reflective and melancholy post only underscores the pain that seems ongoing in your corner of the world, yet you still manage to rebound with hope built on what's happened.
The art you've created from the slate taken from your lost home is inspiring; the sort of thing that you could probably make a bit of cash with if you did the custom quotations for people. Of course you'd want to hang on to the pieces of your old home, but maybe there's another source for the medium? I really like that as a piece of garden art. Were I not in rather gloomy financial straits right now (another of the vast horde of recently unemployed) I'd probably hector you further on making more of them.
As for your photo of the spider? I could not agree more about how digital photography has changed the face of that particular art. I've always loved taking pictures of things, but I could never seem to capture anything in the way I actually saw it the way I can now with my little digital camera.

 | 09:28 pm - Recovering Ancient Files? So I recently agreed to let an anthologist publish the script of a comic I wrote back in 1993 or '94, "Becoming the Monster" (which originally appeared in Weird Business with art by Miran Kim). I knew I didn't have the file on this computer, but I thought I might be able to find it on an old diskette, and if not, I could always retype it from the comic.
Well, I did find it on an old diskette, but it's an MS-DOS file written on a computer that was probably new around 1986, and I've been unable to open it. Now it occurs to me that yes, I can retype the text that actually appears in the comic, but I won't have any of the original "stage directions" (instructions to the artist about what each panel should include), which are a big part of what make reading scripts interesting.
So is there anyone here who might be able to recover the file if I sent you the disk? It's a 3 1/2" floppy, and I also have a USB floppy drive I'm willing to lend you for the purpose if need be. I cannot pay for your services, as I am only receiving a pittance for the reprint, but I will send you a signed/personalized book of your choice (as long as my library accommodates your choice; there are some things I don't have extra copies of), and of course I will pay your postage to return the disk and (if necessary) disk drive to me.
Thanks, y'all.
[ETA: Thanks to drjon's suggestion to e-mail myself the file via gmail, I was able to recover it. Apparently gmail has some interesting file converters tucked away inside. Now I not only have the file; I have access to dozens of other files I thought were lost forever. Grateful thanks to my pal down under!]

 | 09:10 pm - *snert* I knew you were a writer, Doc, but your bonding with the Pope post is comedy gold!
As for Vera Bradley bags, when I moved from CT to the midwest my co-workers chipped in bought me one. I had expressed a fancy for the one with the egg design (also chickens on the border) but they were just then discontinued so I got what my partner Debra describes as 'Pennsylvania Dutch Vomit'. Still, I loved the pockets and the comfort of carrying it but I finally let it go, too.
I hope that the dialog between PZB & PB continues. Also, I find myself smiling when I see the Sardonic!Poppy mug shot icon :D

 | 07:13 pm - Greetings and a Bird ID request Hello, Doc. No hurry on this or anything, since I realize your are still doing your church vigil (among other things), but when you have a chance, I wonder if you can I.D. this bird for me. I took the picture in central Florida. I think I asked you this once before but I forgot what you told me. I'm scattered that way sometimes--forgive me!
Since I'm here, I want to wish both you and Chris and your family of cats a Merry Christmas and a peaceful, healthy 2009. I hope that things that continue to improve for you health-wise (congratulations on your success at getting away from the pain killers--it's an amazing thing and however it happened, I am very glad that it's behind you). Merry Christmas!

 | 12:23 am - Cajun Egg Nog in Lafayette (fyi)
I picked up my first ever Cajun Egg Nog Thursday night. I didn't drink and drive--I brought it home (the Biggest One they sold) and sipped its lusciousness. What a delicious concoction.
In Lafayette we get them at NEW ORLEANS ORIGINAL DAiQUiRiS LAFAYETTE on the corner of Johnston Street and Ambassador Caffery.
I hope this is appropriate for the community. If you come to Lafayette, the next round's on me. :)

 | 08:14 pm - Off topic daquiri question :) I'm headed down for a weekend in New Orleans just under a week from today and am seriously craving a cajun eggnog daquiri. Sometimes I get lucky and they're available the week before Thanksgiving, sometimes I've come up empty handed after searching all over the Quarter for them. So I'm wondering if anybody has seen them out yet or heard if they've been spotted? If I'm not mistaken, the good Doc is a fan, and I keep hoping to spot a post that includes finding them for sale, but so far no luck (or I've missed it!).
If they're not, a heads-up if they hit the daquiri bars before next Thursday would be greatly appreciated and cut back on my dragging my friends from place to place in search of them. *G*
Thanks!

 | 11:11 pm - Have Some More Cats Hey Poppy,
Dunno if I sent these/if you got these since my email tends to evaporate in your inbox, but they're too delicious not too share.
Boudreaux's Boudoir Shot, as photographed [sorta] by Bellocq. I like his pillow-perm/freshly-fucked look here.

And someone needs to tell Franky that humility is also a part of being really, really good looking. That 'tude is a bit much, doncha think?
