I blame the person who bought the t-shirt a hell of a lot more than the person who designed it. I could design all sorts of stupid, racist, sexist shit. Doesn't mean you have to go buy it! The girl suing the designer is absolutely fucking ridiculous. She made a conscious choice to spend the $69 fucking dollars on the shirt AND to then wear it. It's her damn fault.

Okay - maybe it's just me.
But.

Shoving, pulling out earphones, yelling, and spitting in the face is not, in my opinion, egregious. I got worse than that in high school, and no one there particularly cared. If they'd decked the woman, sure as shit I'd feel they were in the wrong. But when someone wears a shirt that is the equivalent of hate speech, something that is a *crime* in this state, their response is better than suing the bitch for what she wore.

Sorry, no. Say anything you like to her; she certainly earned someone sharing their opinions back to her. Shout them, if she's wearing headphones. It's impolite, but I could argue for it.

But unasked-for physical contact is over the line into questionable (at best) or criminal behavior. Touch someone or their things without their permission, and it's simply not okay.

Wow I am so appalled. This "irony on tee shirts is kewl" shit has gone too far. It isn't even ironic, it is just offensive. Why would someone think it's ok to wear that especially in NYC?

I'm sure this dumb chick thought she would be "safe" to wear it in Union Square because it's a very NYU student filled (hipsteriffic) neighborhood. Guess what moron? It is also a huge hub on the subway system between Brooklyn and Manhattan, and all kinds of people take trains. I'm thinking that the girl who bought the shirt just didn't "get" that it was racist. I imagine she thought it was a funny, topical, ironic shirt derived from the "Jesus is my homeboy" style of...uh..hilarity. The fact that she went back to the store after the incident and said the designer "should be ashamed of himself," plus the fact that she, you know, WORE IT OUT IN PUBLIC IN NYC, leads me to believe she's NOT a balls out racist, but simply...a total moron trying desperately to fit in with the hipster crowd. ya, the shirt is disgusting and that girl is sublimely ignorant, but that doesn't justify assault. i think public humiliation is more appropriate. why not print her full name with a photo, so everyone can see what kind of a person wears a shirt like that. just imagine if she tries to get hired somewhere, or tries to get an apartment, ect. i think she deserves to be mocked, but assaulted? nope.

TBH I'd rather someone rough me up and spit on me than ruin my ability to get a job, a home, etc.

Spit, while quite gross and sans possible wacky spit-spread diseases, washes off in one cleaning. And, the article implies she was shoved and had hear headphones grabbed, which is a form of violence/assault, I'd rather even take a punch or two which will fade away in a week or month (or heck, two) than something more socially damaging like what you're suggesting.

I'm not sure why someone would believe that physical harm is bad but harming someone in a way where where they lose their ability to earn money and live somewhere is acceptable.
