9th-Jul-2009 05:47 pm - retro television!

Okay, I've been meaning to do this for a while and I've got nothing to do, so I will write a post about the best animated cartoon ever, Dungeons & Dragons. If you haven't heard of it, it's because it only ran for twenty-seven episodes and it was cancelled in 1985, the same year I was born. Supposedly it was the most violent show on television at the time, and I'm linking the most violent episode of the series, and I'd personally feel okay with kids on any age watching it so I don't know what the National Coalition on Television Violence was complaining about—but that intro, the one from the third season, probably demonstrates the somewhat sinister themes they were going for. It also shows all the characters' personalities and powers really well in fifty-eight seconds, I like it a lot. Also, that villainous voice at the end? That's Optimus Prime.

Dungeons & Dragons, why it's awesome, and the episode 'The Dragon's Graveyard' )
9th-Jul-2009 08:28 pm - Late night, come home
I should be much angrier right now than I am.

At work on Tuesday, there was a, shall we say, misunderstanding. I was "caught socializing" when, in fact I was taking a short break at a moment when there was no work to do. Maybe my boss feels threatened as I take on more and more responsibilities at work, maybe he feels like I'm a role model so he's got to come down extra hard on me. Both of those are theories of my mother's. Anyway, I was sent home for it and told not to come in while management made it's decision, which is code, in my place of employment, for "while I try to get you suspended for two weeks".

Lo and behold, when he called me yesterday, I was suspended for two weeks. I was, of course, nothing if not professional during his lecture, actively channeling my inner-Spock to stay so, and when he announced the decision, I appealed to him on two levels.

1. Going for two weeks without pay would make it exceedingly difficult to pay next months rent, and

2. After almost a year of working there, I have a flawless record with no write-ups, a near-perfect evaluation, and not even so much as a warning. Surely these things should be taken into account when deciding a punishment. Of course, he told me that one should "take these things into account before acting out". He has a very special way of making you feel like a five-year-old during a conversation.

He called me back today, and told me I was on a week's leave, and that since I had already been gone for a few days, I could come back next Wednesday. I thanked him for it, like the good employee I am.

In part, I'm incredibly angry over the way this situation was handled. On one hand, I should not have been where I was, and I take responsibility for that. On the other hand, I was not being neglectful of my duties in any way and in fact, after the incident (but before I was asked to leave) I continued to work when the opportunity presented itself. I don't believe there was any cause for a suspension in all of this.

As for the other part, I'm a little grateful. I've worked it out, and thanks to an influx of more hours recently, I really won't be losing very much money at all. So I get a few days off. It actually means I can go visit my sister in Kentucky this weekend. I spent yesterday with friends then saw Star Trek for the seventh time. Today, I went to dinner with a friend I hardly get to see outside of work, and now I'm watching episodes of TOS. Fuck them, I'm doing fine. They can live long and prosper.

tl;dr, work sucks, I know, she left me roses by the stairs, surprises let me know she cares (the Universe, that is).

7th-Jul-2009 06:59 pm - -gapes at the computer screen-
Really, I go on vacation for all of four days and the everything implodes on itself.

Sarah Palin resigned?  wtf, why?  and why can't I find a good news link to why she resigned and what happened/when this was announced.  There is entirely too much MJ ceremony stuff on tv and has been for the past week.  Someone help me out with a link on this one.

And Panic.  I have to say, I did not see that one coming.  That said, just as I said with Ian, there's nothing I can do about it, and I would rather have them split (and both parts make even more music for me to listen to) than have them be miserable and spend years fighting before they inevitable break up.   It's worked for a lot of bands that I'm too young to know really weel so I'm sure they can do it.

I haven't been following them as closely as I was last summer but still, it's kind of a wtf situation.

Anything else really big happen that I've missed since Friday?

* * * * *

Friday night was one of those superduperfun nights with Boy. Most nights are good, but we made up a new game, called simply, "Sugarcult."

How to play:
  • Grab a Sugarcult CD. We listened to Lights Out.
  • Sugarcult's music is FIERCE but it's also extremely derivative.
  • Listen to the first few seconds of a song.
  • Whoever can come up with the band that particular song is modeled after wins.
  • BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
  • Listen to the song in its entirety.
  • Because it may SWITCH INFLUENCES in the middle.
  • OR NEAR THE END.
  • For real!
No kidding! A single Sugarcult song can go Nirvana-Toadies-Buggles ALL WITHIN FIVE MINUTES!

I'm sure there's a way to win, but we didn't care about that. We had so, so much fun. We got near the end of Lights Out, and I was like, BUT THEY DIDN'T STEAL FROM U2! GOOD FOR THEM! And then boom--there it was. The Edge all over the place. Two songs in a row! WACKYFUN!

The writing?  Well, I have made it to the climax of the revision.  This is where the plot is giving me problems.  So my job this week is to examine those problems and come with alternatives to bounce off BookMommy.  I already have two endings -- one from the original, one from the first revision.  So I have to figure out what worked, what didn't, and what needs to happen for it all to come together.  I hope to have a plan of action before the California trip.  Crossing fingers here.

Other stuff is going on right now, but that's enough chatter for now.

Read Eyes Like Stars!  Play Sugarcult!  Keep yer fingers crossed for my dumb-bunny brain!

6th-Jul-2009 06:59 pm - I'm being slightly bitchy.
I'd love to have a Kindle. I'd love to have like hundreds of books with me at all times and my choice of which to read. It's like an iPod. But for books. And who hates iPods? I mean I love my records but they take up so much space, and I can't take them everywhere, and CDs were fun but also quite a bit limiting, but now my 15 GB-sized music collection goes everywhere with me. Sure, a Kindle would require batteries, that I don't refute, but so does my cell phone and I don't think anyone would argue that the old rotary phone wired to my mother's office wall is more convenient because of this. I could wirelessly download things for cheap, or free, without going to the one bookstore we have across town. Bonus, it's way better for the environment than regular books, where do you think paper comes from? And how do you think they get boxes of books from place to place? I would use the shit out of that thing and probably love it forever, and I'd almost certainly read a lot more.

Dude. Amazing. Why does everyone get so snooty about these things?

... God, I really do want one now. Amazon has a deal with Sprint which lets you connect to their network anywhere for free. Maybe if I send Amazon ten dollars a month they'll let me have one in ... three years.
Went down to the sea and drank wine and beer with my cousin. I've only known him a month or two after we both met at the Biltmore ("Gracie? I didn't know you were a fucking hipster!") but he has happily taken a place in my heart as secret-secret-family; my aunts and uncles don't know that we know one another. He held my hand while we talked about our bikes and music and Vancouver. We both can't wait to get out. We made a vow to rendezvous Berlin for Christmas, then went to the show:

I can only think of three things that are better than the Dirty Projector's soul buttering, three-party harmony covers of Black Flag, and they are foxes, mustaches, and breakfast.

Such breakfasts! Kara and I went for eggs and coffee and watched the weird rain. We exchanged books. She's moving to this neck of the woods in a month and we plan to sleep on one another's floors until I leave. Plans! On the 24th and 25th we're going down to Capitol Hill Musicfest in Seattle to drink and dance and man-eat. American man-eat. Ain't we got fun. Also...

I have a date on Wednesday. With the prettiest girl I've ever seen who shares my musical tastes, AND is an avid watcher of Sailor Moon. Dear Universe: what are you doing to me and my poor heart? Why do you wait till I leave in two months before putting the two of us in the same bar? This never happens to me. I'm so nervous. I am a picnic of nervousness.

Also, fuck Gravity's Rainbow. I'm going back to Calvino, Walter, and reviewing my Latin conjugations for the rest of the summer. This "gem of postmodern fiction" is going to go in the corner with Infinite Jest, and I will start them both again in two years.

Well geeze, if he's gonna go make a post about how I sometimes hijack his LJ and post for him, I guess I'd better do so, eh? Since I haven't in a while and have nothing better to do at the moment.

Hello, Owen's flist! This is Beth, aka [info]deesarrachi, aka the girlfriend. Greetings to his LJ friends old and new! :D

...

Yeah, that's about all I got.

Spam his inbox with macros! Post, my pretties! Mwahahahahaha!

5th-Jul-2009 11:11 pm - sharps & flats
IT LIVES.

Just updated Sharps & Flats, at very long last. I technically added two chapters, which is partially what's been taking me so long. One new chapter is a additional scene of relationship development between Jack and David that I have I spliced between the old chapters 5 and 6, the other is a continuation of the story. This may cause some confusion (e.g. my reviews no longer match my chapter content) and may require some rereading of old content. I tried my darnedest to be true to the characters and story and make the wait worthwhile.

(Oh, story not yet updated at the Refuge. Will do so when have presence of mind to code and fiddle with chapter order, etc. Hopefully tomorrow.)

One blessed chapter left to go! Well one chapter and, uh... yeah, so I may have entirely plotted out a sequel...
