What's New in New Orleans, as seen by Frommer's Guide
So I was perusing the 2008 Frommer's Guide to New Orleans, and there's an introductory section titled "What's New In New Orleans." It's a recap of the past few years, and is a fairly succinct and accurate description of recovery and current conditions. But this part especially was nice (and I feel like sharing with the class):

"Today recovery is ongoing, and the process goes slowly. All manner of important things are, maddeningly, no closer to being resolved than in the early days after the storm, while the fate of many citizens and establishments remains in question. Which prompts a question of your own, probably: Should you go?

Oh, yes.

Go, because everything in life is fragile and precarious, and we can take nothing for granted, and some day it really will all be gone. Go, because it's not gone, not at all. Go, because the things you wanted -- the beautiful architecture, the majestic oaks, the river wind, the quality of light that makes even the most mundane just a little bit magic -- all remain. Go, because there are people there, and as long as they are, there will be music and food, and it will be some of the best of your life. Go, because perhaps you've wanted to help in any way you can, and now the best way you can is to help a historic city regain its economic feet. Go, because every brick in the French Quarter has a story to tell, and so does the damaged ground of the Ninth Ward, and you should bear witness. Go, because there is much to celebrate, and this is still the best place there is to do so.

"I want to be in that number," goes the song. I do indeed. I hope you do, too."

The rest of it can be read here.

The Introduction piece is pretty nice, too.

That is really beautiful and expresses exactly how I felt when I came home after the storm. Thanks for sharing.

This sentence pretty much sums up why I came to New Orleans for the first time last year.

Go, because it's not gone, not at all.

And this sentence pretty much sums up why I'm coming back this May, and will keep on coming back, again and again.

Well if that doesn't eloquently crystallize why one should visit, what does?

The end of the intro struck me as well:

Remember: We warned you, so don't blame us if you come to New Orleans and one day discover that you never left.

I would have added this last sentence, myself:

"Oh yeah, the bars don't have to close, so you can get way fucked up on the cheap, 24 hours a day, and also damn near everyone down here is crazy slutty, so we got that going on as well".

I'm gonna be there (5th time) April/May.
I'm not always greeted pleasantly, as a tourist, but I'm not giving up my chances to see America's most interesting city.
Thanks for the post--even though it means I'll meet Frommer's folks this time around.

Go, because everything in life is fragile and precarious, and we can take nothing for granted, and some day it really will all be gone. This was true even before I left in 1996, as I remeber noticing the wetlands loosing more trees and gaining more open water driving on St. Bernard Hwy from when I was a kid to an adult.

This is one of the most poignantly written pieces on the importance of recognizing what New Orleans has to offer as a cultural experience for an out of towner to be intrigued and for those that have lived there to take stock of what they already know.

Great. Now I'm sniffling at my desk.
3 years from now, when my son graduates high school, my husband and I are moving down.
I'm going to buy copies of this book for every family member that questions our decision.

Hey there, found your journal through [info]infrogmation via [info]plinko and just wanted to comment saying that was truly beautiful. I lived in New Orleans for several years in the mid/late 90's and loved it... I felt horribly guilty at not being there when the hurricane hit, which I know doesn't make much sense, but it was like I wanted to DO something, and aside from send money and volunteer with evacuees, there wasn't much to be done from Dallas. Make a girl get all weepy, why don'tcha!
