cnbc telethon
i just saw this on cnbc.

they're doing some sort of telethon with celebrities. mike meyers is onscreen with some dude who i don't recognize. a celebrity i'm assuming. Mike Meyers reads his cue card, talking about how much katrina victims need help etc. He pauses to let the other guy read his cue card, and this is what the guy says: "George Bush doesn't care about black people." Mike Meyers does a double take. There is a moment of stunned silence, and the camera cuts away.

anyone else see this? i'd like to know who that guy was.

That was none other than Kanye West. I was half listening to it and was like "Did he really just say that????"

That icon looks familiar. :) I'm so graphics inept, that thing took forever to make.

So that's where it came from! Do you want credit?

I wish I had any graphics knowledge. I'd love to fuse together some of my NoLa pictures for an icon.

Yes please, credit would be nice. :) Did you see someone else with it? LOL

I actually thought the 'Fuck You Katrina' icon would be floating around, not the other one. LOL

I saw it too. Mike Myers tried to save it. That was awkward.

Maybe, but he was bumbling over his words. He said several setences before that were barely comprehensible. If anyone was able to make out what he ACTUALLY meant/was saying, please post it.

No, he said some things before that. I caught it but couldn't understand it. It was him, but before the shot of him with mike myers.

The part I caught was something about how he went shopping before he donated anything, but now that he knows how it is, he's going to ask his business manager how much he can donate... Bizarre.

But yeah, there was definitely more about "my people" and "poor people" that I only half understood.

Are you talking about Kanye?

Sure.

Disclaimers:
-Dunno a thing about him 'cept his chosen genre (and to be honest, whether he's white or black.)
-Haven't seen the clip. Google hates me right now. Is it up anywhere?
-My reaction doesn't stem from his opinion (I agree, bush probably doesn't put much priority on your average NOLA resident being above or below water, since most people there didn't vote for him anyway), only from his decision to drag politics into a telethon. I've been getting my screen clogged with people from every camp trying to use this thing to make whoever's on the other side look bad, while all I'm trying to do is find out if my friends are still alive (three left unaccounted for, by the way). Anyone pulling a stunt like that would earn my personal fuckwit award.

And googling kanye tells me that he's got more than enough media presence to do this on his own time.

I appreciate such a well thought, non flaming response. :)

Yeah, Kanye is a black rapper, but he's known for always speaking his mind. His music isn't the stereotypical 'bitches and hoes and bling-bling'. I really don't even care for rap, but he is one of the few that I like because of what he has to say.

But I can understand your gripe with him putting politics into the telethon, although it doesn't bother me one bit. I have not seen a link but CNN showed the clip on TV last night. Here is a link on Yahoo, to an article about what Kanye said.

I hope you find your friends, and they are all ok. Even though I am not from New Orleans, all of this is personal to me. My BFs family lost their house, several of his friends are believed to be dead, and the application I had ready to go to Tulane is sitting stagnant in my desk drawer. I also have several friends from NOLA, but so far they are all accounted for.

*hugs*

Happy to. There're enough flames going around right now. 'Sides, you're friends with Sadie. :)

Thanks for the good wishes. If I can help you two with information, let me know.

Friends with Sadie? Friends? Pssh...I just photographed her in her panties during a trip to New Orleans, and watched her chat up gay men while she was topless, that's all. We're not really friends....LOL. Kidding.

But not about taking pictures of her, I'm a photographer in my spare time. :)

11:22 P.M. - (AP): Outspoken rapper Kanye West made waves at NBC's "A Concert for Hurricane Relief." He claimed "George Bush doesn't care about black people" and said America is set up "to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible."

...

West began a rant by saying, "I hate the way they portray us in the media. If you see a black family, it says they're looting. See a white family, it says they're looking for food."

...

In a statement, NBC said, "Kanye West departed from the scripted comments that were prepared for him, and his opinions in no way represent the views of the networks.

"It would be most unfortunate," the statement continued, "if the efforts of the artists who participated tonight and the generosity of millions of Americans who are helping those in need are overshadowed by one person's opinion."
