Still need to evacuate the hurricane?
I've been doing searches of posts from people in the New Orleans area, and have noticed several people who are apparently riding out the storm, with some who apparently have no way to leave and nowhere to go to.

If you need to evacuate but don't have a ride, food, or a place to evacuate to, please reply to this post, and leave your email address or phone number so that others can get ahold of you and offer up assistance.

Likewise, if you are outside of the danger area for the hurricane and can open your home for awhile to someone so they can evacuate, or if you are evacuating from New Orleans soon and can offer someone a ride out of town, please reply too and let people know how they can contact you and take you up on your offer.

Thanks for the post. I do think I'll be ok. The dogs help. :)
It will all be good. I'm sure.

Best of luck. Just in case you need it, here is a comment another LJer left:

I'm not looking for a way out, but I'm in a really secure building in the warehouse district if anyone needs a place to stay. It's pet friendly, and I'm willing to open my doors to anyone who needs anything. we've socked away tons of water and the place is taped up like fort knox, and we have a super-secure internal hallway on the fourth floor with no windows or anything. Just give me a call, anyone who wants to ride out the thing with company.

While I'm thinking about it, take the time now to fill every container that you can -- including your bathtub -- with fresh water. You probably won't have it later, and may not have access to it for weeks.

also, I can't physically put shutters on the windows, or I would, believe me. I'm on a high-enough floor that I can't get outside to do it, and don't have any way to transport plywood anyway.

that sorta sucks, but good thing that you are on a high floor away from the potential flooding waters...

something to keep in mind

A 175mph hurricane is the equivalent of a F3 tornado... except it's about 20-50 miles, not yards, wide. Winds of this speed rip off roofs and knock down walls. Once either of these have occurred, the integrity of the entire structure has been completely compromised, as the winds now blow in ... and without anywhere to go... the force eventually just sorta blows up inside (knocks out more windows, walls, etc.) So yeah, your best bet is probably that internal hallway with *no* windows.

stay safe & good luck!

You are absolutely right. This is more intense than Camille. Here are a couple images for those of you who don't quite understand how serious this is. If you still have doubts, visit this website about Camille: http://www.geocities.com/hurricanene/hurricanecamille.htm

No, but I am still a spotter. I had to stop driving - car got too expensive. I report what happens from my apt. It has been fairly mellow here storm-wise, too. New York is only harsh in the winter, it seems.

Ignorance is bliss, Cypher would say. If you can still get out, and someone is offering to help you do so, get out.

This is no Ivan, no Dennis. You thought those were hurricanes?

Thanks for your concern, but I would not want to muss this adventure by evacuating. When something this big comes to call, best I be here to greet it formally. I am keeping an on-going series of posts on my thoughts in my LJ for those interested.

I have enough water to last me a week. Beyond that and I shall have to inflate my air mattress (battery powered air pump) then paddle out to someplace where someone will spot me.

Remember too, that wood floats. A kitchen table top, or bedroom headboard could also be used in an emergency.

Here is a page of dozens of people ready to open their homes to those in New Orleans who are evacuating. Austin, Jacksonville, Nashville, Ann Arbor -- just pick a place.

Also, there is a live webcast from channel 4 for those of you without a tv here:
http://www.wwltv.com/perl/common/video/wmPlayer.pl?title=beloint_wwltv&props=livenoad

This way you can keep up on what is happening, as well as find out where the shelters are.

Best of luck to those of you who stay =)!

No problem. They have been providing excellent information, and some really blut opinions.

Bottom line: If you absolutely can't leave or get to a shelter, make sure you are at least 25 above sea level, and away from all windows and doors. If you have any inflatable device, -air mattress, anything - have it ready.

I am so concerned =\ I wish I wasn't so far away so I could help.

I live up in MI, but my fiance is a licensed Class A CDL roll off driver (carries huge dumpsters full of debris on semi's). He's thinking of volunteering to come down and help clean up the aftermath. There's always something that you can do to help. I know Salvation Army and Red Cross has volunteering and donations programs.

After the initial storm, when everyone is in boats, I'll alert whoever comes to get us about your friend.
