WYES fundraising drive

  • Nov. 20th, 2009 at 9:26 PM
WYES is having its live telethon right now. I called in and gave; I wouldn't have felt compelled to but the dude reminded me of some programming we take advantage of every morning: the unparalleled children's educational shows offered through partnership with PBS. Sid the Science Kid in the hooouuuse!

If you like what they offer, why not call in and donate as well? Apparently the budget has been severely cut so they're trying to make up a $360,000 shortfall. As of the first ten minutes, only eight donors had ponied up. :(

486-7311 / 1-800-486-7311.

You can also donate online at wyes.org.

If you donate $175 you get two tickets to Trans-Siberian Orchestra, December 17th.

The purpose of the event is let the public experience the culture of India through a free and interactive festival atmosphere that is appropriate for all ages.

The Ratha Yatra parade is an age old tradition from India in which Deities of the Lord are placed on a hand pulled float and paraded through the city to pour their mercy upon the public. Chanting and dancing (kirtan) are joyfully performed on the streets during the procession and all are welcome to join in the festivities.

The parade ends at the festival grounds in which ongoing interactive activities will take place that portray the culture of India including live musical and dance performances by world famous artists including Aashish Khan, a yoga expo produced by Wild Lotus Yoga, an ayurveda stall, tarot readings, mehendi hand art, a free vegetarian feast for all and an onsite diorama (museum) of the history/culture of India.

"It has been proven in a court of law that the drowning of New Orleans
was not a natural disaster, but a preventable man-made travesty," the
attorneys said in a statement. "The government has always had a moral
obligation to rebuild New Orleans. This decision makes that obligation a matter of legal responsibility." -- CNN story

Here in Greater New Orleans, where people routinely talk about "the Federal Flood" and refer to the MRGO Canal as "the Hurricane Highway", the news isn't the facts of the case, but rather the judge finding legal liability.

If I understand the ruling correctly, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has legal immunity from being sued for damages from the failure of their mis-designed and mis-built levees, but not for the fact that the MRGO Canal channeled deep sea storm surge right into the heart of the city. This point alone is enough to make them culpable for the majority of the flooding of the Greater New Orleans area in 2005.

On UPI

For those interested in details of what happened and why concerning the great flood, I reccomend the book Catastrophe in the Making: The Engineering of Katrina and the Disasters of Tomorrow. It also makes the point that rather than Greater New Orleans being unique in vulnerability, bad decisions by political and business interests have created no shortage of other engineering disasters waiting to happen.

Sunday, Shadow Gallery presents the striped and fractured after-party to Emilie Autumn's Asylum tour to haunt your teacups until your dreams are purged through electroshock. Upstairs at the Dragon's Den, beginning at 11 p.m. (though since Ms. Autumn's show begins at 8, we may be starting early to accommodate any particularly prompt muffins). As always, no cover. Thanks again to our friends at Attrition for handing us the whole night on a silver saucer.

It's Satsuma Season!

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 9:01 PM
Everyone has been giving us satsumas, we're now up to a couple of sackfuls. We've been eating them plain, but I'm starting to get tired of them and I would like something a little more exciting. I was thinking of steeping some of them in vodka, but that takes ages and I'm sure that we'll get more this week.

So, New Orleans, what are your favorite satsuma recipes?

In case you didn't know

There will be a FREE health care clinic in the convention Center today. They are only expecting about 2000 people (it's in several ballrooms and meeting rooms). So if you need some health care help or general information, today is a great day to get some.
Who knows...the wait might be less than in a hospital and it's FREE.

Odd request.

  • Nov. 13th, 2009 at 10:31 PM
Hi all!
I have a somewhat unusual request for anyone in the New Orleans area.

As a late Spring/Fall retail item, Starbucks offered City Mugs for major metropolitan areas. I actually work at a Starbucks near Washington, DC. I'm hoping there's somebody in the area who is a regular, or in an even longer shot, is a fellow partner.

I have two DC mugs and am DESPERATELY seeking a new or very gently used NOLA mug. I can trade a DC mug or any other item that I can lay my hands on, or cash.
Holiday items will be appearing soon! I will be able to pick up anything you may desire as soon as it’s out, with no risk of it being out of stock in your local Starbucks.

If there is anyone who’s interested, please contact me and let me know ASAP- I am hoping I could do this as a Christmas present for a West Bank/NOLA expat in my family. My email is horseygurll88 AT mac DOT com, or you can contact me here on LJ.

ETA: I'm looking for the mug with the jazz player on it, NOT the skyline, as a first choice. I will take the skyline if it's all that's left, though.
Also, I am not in the area, which is why I ask. I've tried ebay, and don't want to pay $40 for a $10 mug. I appreciate the suggestion but it's kind of ludicrous to look on ebay for this item.

call for writers and photogs

  • Nov. 11th, 2009 at 2:58 PM

In spite of my superpowers I have not mastered the ability to be in more than one place at a time. With this in mind I am putting a call out for contributing writers and photographers for The Jeaux Sheaux, a digital and web based website that covers all of the good things about New Orleans.   If you have photos of articles (or events) you can email them to me at joannie1@gmail.com    At this time we are not paying for submissions but credit of course will be given.  Only positive people please, the neagtive nags are in good supply.  ;-)

Play.Music.Heal.

New Orleanians, or anyone that can head to NOLA between NOV. 13-15—Acting Up (in Acadiana) has created a haunting, truthful and memorable play—the performances in Play. Music. Heal. of the talented professional theatre company are astonishing and vital.

(I had a small part in developing this project contributing some writing.)

ACTING UP (IN ACADIANA)

http://www.actingupinacadiana.com

PLAY. MUSIC. HEAL.: neo-traditional struggles, South Louisiana, a wealthy political family, an offshore worker, his pregnant girlfriend, a festival dancer who does pet funerals, and a vegan butcher tell individual stories without listening to each other. If “you can change the world with only three chords”, will they ever listen?
