Hello New Orleans community! I have the opportunity to sign long distance on a place in the next couple of days, but I respect the opinions in this community and I am looking for guidance. We have already looked at the place and it's very nice on the inside...it's a renovated shotgun - half of a double - with two itty bitty tiny private bedrooms and a large master bedroom with two full bathrooms for $750/month. It is just a street over from Esplanade...basically the Treme I guess (?), but bordering Mid-City. Would you feel comfortable with this neighborhood? I have already looked at the crime map and there was one murder a couple blocks over within the last month...most of the crime seems to be car theft-related. If I go back over the course of a year, there are more murders that pop up, but I'm just not sure what the average neighborhood crime looks like in New Orleans. We are going to install a security system if we end up moving in, as this place doesn't have one and it seems like a fairly affordable and worthwhile investment. I wish that I could just go speak with the neighbors, but I am in Georgia until the 30th of July, so I can't. I'm not really trying to come across as scared because that's not the case. I guess what I just wonder is, if your friend was moving in here, would you give him/her your blessing? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

anyone attend the show last night? did he do any katrina material? just curious about the show in general.
Hey folks,
I'm just curious if there's anywhere in New Orleans or Baton Rouge that sells cds and records. There was a place in my city called Disc Exchange, where I was able to find Siouxsie and the Banshees. Any recommendations?

Next Friday, July 17, at the Dragon's Den, is three days after Bastille Day. As the peasants and the bourgeoisie clamor with their dull voices for liberty, equality, and - whatever the ridiculous lower classes are whining about, the cream of society will gather for an evening of shimmering belle esprit, kick the severed heads to the edge of the dance floor, and while away the hours secluded from the shadow of the slack-jawed, mouth-breathing rebellion outside. There shall be wine, cakes, exquisite company, and superlative music as Shadow Gallery presents -

Is there anywhere in the city to get awesome Thai food?
I tried the Basil Leaf and it was good, but not great Thai.
I just moved down from DC(though I'm from here originally) so I'm kind of spoiled.

Hey all, my boyfriend moved down here from Chicago and has been having a craving for horchata, which he describes as rice water that's kind of sweet and rather similar to chai. I took him to Juan's Flying Burrito on Magazine, but they had no idea what it was, and I am far from a fan of Mexican food so Juan's is really the only place I know.
Any ideas on where we could find some of that stuff?
Thanks!

Is there any coffee shop that just serves a thai iced tea, preferably mid-city but anywhere is fine?

Can anyone recommend a travel clinic in the area?
Going to the tropics next month, I'm up to date on my shots but I need a prescription for an anti-malarial.
Cheap is good. My insurance won't cover a travel clinic consultation.

Can anyone recommend a decent gym with summer specials or low/no initiation fees? I'm looking for a place to join for about 6 weeks - the more uptown the better, but that's what a bike is for!
Thanks!
Edit: Thanks for the tips - Loyola's got a non-student summer deal with no initiation fee and they pro-rate to the week. ~$80 now to the end of August, or $48 if you're in before 2pm on weekdays.

So how many of you smelled Dow's little screw-up in Hahnville this morning? It was pretty obvious to me in Mid-City, and co-workers have said they smelled it in many other neighborhoods. You?
My girlfriend encouraged me to report to you all:
Watching the fireworks from on top of the levee in Algiers is top notch. We could see the reflections of the fireworks in the tall glass buildings across the river in downtown New Orleans. It was really, really fun. We ended up just by serendipity finding this great part of the levee which was pretty much directly across from Harrah's (so we were a little downriver of the Algiers ferry terminal) and we had a great view of the fireworks being shot from from the more downriver barge. There were all sorts of people with their families, sitting in chairs (we brought our chairs and some beers/ciders in a cooler), and it was very festive and really great, not too crowded but just enough of a crowd to make it feel exciting.
In terms of transit, we drove to the West Bank in the afternoon and had a movie and dinner before heading to the Algiers levee. There indeed was a fair amount of traffic leaving the neighborhood around us after the fireworks ended, so we just sat on the levee in our folding chairs with our beers and waited until it calmed down before we got in our car. I90 and I10 getting home back to the city were fine although the wait to get through the toll was kind of long (but not too horrible). If you had a toll tag it would ave been almost no wait for the toll. So altogether it was very successful.
We decided not to do the ferry thing. Did anyone try the ferry? How'd that go?

Ok, so I've been away from home for a long time and both my husband and I are seriously craving snowballs. We can get snow cones out here in Tampa, but not the good stuff from back home. So, the question is, has anyone found a machine for home use that will give the correct consistency of shaved ice to make a proper New Orleans snowball??? I can find the big machines for commercial use, but I'm looking to spend a LOT less for something I can do at home once in a while...
I'm sure other transplants would greatly appreciate this info as well
