Brees to Obama FTW

  • Nov. 26th, 2009 at 7:30 PM
So I saw this during the Lions game today, and a feeling of joy and hope washed over me. While trying not to read too much into this, I am pretty sure that this means that Obama wants us to go all the way. Happy Thanksgiving, girls and boys.

Assemblage 23!

  • Nov. 25th, 2009 at 1:09 PM
We are pleased to announce that we have signed Assemblage 23 to come down here and play for us on April 12th. They'll be performing at the Howlin Wolf, and backed up by Angel Theory, all the way from Melbourne Australia and our own Suicide Assyst. Of course there will be an afterparty, of course it will be at the Ruby, and certainly Charles Fenech, the man behind Angel Theory will be djing it.

More information to come, but mark your calendars, kids. This is the kind of show that keeps me in this crazy business.

This weekend -- Algiers Point is THE place to be, for sure!
Buy your Christmas trees and wreaths at the Hubbell Holdiay Fest, and support a SUPER GREAT cause! Also: holdiay gift shopping, Santa, book signings, movies, and more!
Saturday is also Holidays on the Point (http://aedf.biz/wednesday-on-the-point/)
AND: A Christmas Dog Walk! http://humanela.org/events.htm#dogwalk
Please spread the word to any and every one!

The Hubbell Library’s annual Christmas Tree and Holiday Gift sale will take place Saturday, November 28th and Sunday, November 29th, from 9 am to 9 pm each day. This event is a major fundraiser for the historic Algiers Point library, and it features absolutely beautiful FRESH CUT trees and wreaths from North Carolina. The trees are great value, and still at least forty percent of sales go to the library.

Algiers Point’s beautiful Cita Dennis Hubbell Branch is the oldest library in the city, a New Orleans treasure. It’s 102 years old, and part of the Carnegie legacy. Due to catastrophic termite damage, the library is closed for repairs. Friends of the Hubbell Library have been working hard to make it possible for this beautiful branch to be restored and reopened, and the tree sale is part of that effort.

Because the library is closed for repairs, this year’s sale will take place three blocks away, at Gulf Pizza, the old Gulf Service Station at 446 Pelican Avenue in Algiers Point. The Gulf station, at the corner of Pelican Avenue and Verret Street, was the site of the first tree sale held to benefit the library, nearly thirty years ago.

Beautiful dog in need of a good home

  • Nov. 24th, 2009 at 1:14 PM
A friend of mine had a sweet little dog follow her home, but when she took her to get fixed, she found out she was already pregnant. With three kids, two dogs and four cats, she can't keep the dog AND all of the puppies. She's a pit bull, about three years old. She's house broken, loves kids and other animals. She's taken a little time to be a little less protective (like having food aggression with the other dogs), but she has proven to be a great pet. Please let me know if anyone is interested. My friend is going to try to keep her until she weens the puppies but the sooner the better.
Her name is Trixie.

As a very far off aside, does anyone have a favorite place to get bread pudding?

Rideshare

  • Nov. 23rd, 2009 at 11:25 PM
Is there anyone heading from Uptown to the airport early Wednesday morning who'd be interested in sharing a ride? I've got an 8am flight and would be down to throw in for gas money or split a cab fare. I live near Magazine and Harmony. Drop me a line if interested - nbrody[at]uno[dot]edu!

Special Olympics fundraiser

  • Nov. 23rd, 2009 at 12:52 PM
To raise money for the Special Olympics, I agreed to jump off the 17 story Landmark Tower in Metairie (well, jump with a rappelling rope attached).

Through your generosity the goal is in sight. I am an Army Medic who has lived in the New Orleans area for six years.

The Special Olympics empowers so many people, from all walks of life…if you're in a position to give, please do so online: www.firstgiving.com/williamwatt.

Thank you very much, regardless of whether you are able to donate or not.

Halbrig's

  • Nov. 21st, 2009 at 12:08 PM
Do Hubig's pies lemon pies go bad?

I received a ton of free ones, left them in my microwave for two weeks, and then rediscovered them. They were kind of looking strange and mushy, so I put them in the freezer. Now I'm wondering if it is "safe" or "tasty" to defrost them and eat them?

24-hour grocery stores

  • Nov. 21st, 2009 at 6:27 AM
Are there any grocery stores in the New Orleans metro area open 24 hours? I'm trying to prepare for the inevitable last-minute forgotten-Thanksgiving-ingredients-dash to the store.

Thanks, everyone!

WYES fundraising drive

  • Nov. 20th, 2009 at 9:26 PM
WYES is having its live telethon right now. I called in and gave; I wouldn't have felt compelled to but the dude reminded me of some programming we take advantage of every morning: the unparalleled children's educational shows offered through partnership with PBS. Sid the Science Kid in the hooouuuse!

If you like what they offer, why not call in and donate as well? Apparently the budget has been severely cut so they're trying to make up a $360,000 shortfall. As of the first ten minutes, only eight donors had ponied up. :(

486-7311 / 1-800-486-7311.

You can also donate online at wyes.org.

If you donate $175 you get two tickets to Trans-Siberian Orchestra, December 17th.

The purpose of the event is let the public experience the culture of India through a free and interactive festival atmosphere that is appropriate for all ages.

The Ratha Yatra parade is an age old tradition from India in which Deities of the Lord are placed on a hand pulled float and paraded through the city to pour their mercy upon the public. Chanting and dancing (kirtan) are joyfully performed on the streets during the procession and all are welcome to join in the festivities.

The parade ends at the festival grounds in which ongoing interactive activities will take place that portray the culture of India including live musical and dance performances by world famous artists including Aashish Khan, a yoga expo produced by Wild Lotus Yoga, an ayurveda stall, tarot readings, mehendi hand art, a free vegetarian feast for all and an onsite diorama (museum) of the history/culture of India.

"It has been proven in a court of law that the drowning of New Orleans
was not a natural disaster, but a preventable man-made travesty," the
attorneys said in a statement. "The government has always had a moral
obligation to rebuild New Orleans. This decision makes that obligation a matter of legal responsibility." -- CNN story

Here in Greater New Orleans, where people routinely talk about "the Federal Flood" and refer to the MRGO Canal as "the Hurricane Highway", the news isn't the facts of the case, but rather the judge finding legal liability.

If I understand the ruling correctly, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has legal immunity from being sued for damages from the failure of their mis-designed and mis-built levees, but not for the fact that the MRGO Canal channeled deep sea storm surge right into the heart of the city. This point alone is enough to make them culpable for the majority of the flooding of the Greater New Orleans area in 2005.

For those interested in details of what happened and why concerning the great flood, I reccomend the book Catastrophe in the Making: The Engineering of Katrina and the Disasters of Tomorrow. It also makes the point that rather than Greater New Orleans being unique in vulnerability, bad decisions by political and business interests have created no shortage of other engineering disasters waiting to happen.

It's Satsuma Season!

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 9:01 PM
Everyone has been giving us satsumas, we're now up to a couple of sackfuls. We've been eating them plain, but I'm starting to get tired of them and I would like something a little more exciting. I was thinking of steeping some of them in vodka, but that takes ages and I'm sure that we'll get more this week.

So, New Orleans, what are your favorite satsuma recipes?
