[KAL] LOOK WHAT THE HORSE DRAGGED IN
Who: Kal Rielly
When: July 1, shortly after In the Rain
Where: The Rowland House Front Porch
Invited: Open
Status: Incomplete

It was getting dark as Kal and the horses wandered through the town. The wet horse smell was now engrained into Kal’s skin, she might just spend the rest of her life smelling like Romeo.

Romeo suddenly turned to the right and Kal gave him a look before fighting to get him to go back to the street they had been on. She had them going on a grid pattern down each street looking for lift…no such luck unless you count that…thing that she had shot. It was one of the multitude of strange creatures she had seen since Fate’s Handmaiden had hit. Kal had taken to ignoring said creatures unless they attacked…or looked edible.

Romeo continued to fight Kal’s direction even as she pulled back steadily on the reigns.

“Whoa! Whoa I said!” Kal hissed as the horse continued on, his head at a funny angle and Kal gave up. In the months since Kal had acquired the three horses she had noted their strange behavior, but her lack of knowledge on horses had let her believe it was simply individual behavior. She wondered if her three equine companions weren’t more exotic than she originally thought. “You’re lucky I just can’t stand to see you walking around with your head all funny.” Romeo looked smug.

Romeo continued down the street, his head up and alert, his ears rotating like mini-radio antenna on his head. Bess and Ace whinnied and neighed behind them and Kal looked at the two.

“You’re in on it too, aren’t you?” she asked and the two horses jerked at their reigns in a nodding motion. “I knew it.” Kal turned forward again, part of her dismissing the behavior as learned since she had, in the beginning, given the horses treats for responding to her talking…another part wondered if she shouldn’t start sleeping with the rifle closer to her sleeping bag.

“I don’t know what to think, the town has lighting, but I haven’t seen a single person,” Kal muttered out loud as Romeo trotted along. He made a mumbling noise and shook his head, slapping Kal’s arms with damp mane hair. “Thank you, now I know the smell of wet horse chased all the people away, that’s why we haven’t seen any.”

Romeo gave a little horse laugh before he stopped and began doing his ear-thing before turning and heading toward a house.

“Okay, hold on boy,” Kal said as he headed toward the house, several lights were on and Kal wondered if they didn’t just find people. “Well I’ll be damned, God bless your little horsey ears.” Of course, Romeo didn’t wait for the blessing, instead he started up onto the porch.

“Hey! Stop that!” Kal cried as she ducked her head to avoid knocking herself stupid on the overhang. “Get down from here!” Romeo looked at the front door curiously and Kal looked behind her to see Bess and Ace squeezing together behind Romeo on the porch steps.

“What’s going on with you three?” Kal wondered before Romeo tapped on the door a few times with his muzzle, apparently discontent with the light tapping sound, instead he gently hit the front door with a hoof, making a funny and heavy sounding knock.

“A great picture we’re going to make with you three standing up here,” Kal scolded and Romeo tilted his head to look at her before snorting and ‘knocking’ again.

Tobias had seen the girl with the horses a few days earlier and had been following her. She was the first person he'd seen in weeks and one of the few that hadn't tried to shoot him as food. That alone made her worth following, although the horses had been another indication that she was good people. He didn't know anything about horses, but he could tell she cared for them as best she could under the circumstances.

Now that she had arrived in a town and seemed to be interested in meeting people, Tobias wasn't so sure that revealing himself to her was the best idea. Screaming as he attacked a mouse, snatching it for a snack, he swooped back up to a tree to eat it and watch what happened. She might not know him, but he'd help her if these people were bad. She was good to the horses.

A heavy clomping and stomping from the front porch caught Victor's attention. It sounded like several people had arrived. People wearing heavy boots by the sound of it. He turned toward the foyer just as the door thudded heavily. It sounded like someone had kicked it.

Victor turned toward his guests. "If you'll excuse me for a moment," he said. He thought he heard a female voice through the door, followed by another heavy thud. The voice surprised him. He was beginning to wonder if he would discover a biker gang marauding through the town based on the heavy footsteps and aggressive knocking.

Opening the door, Victor swayed backward to avoid the moist attentions of...a horse? A forefoot upraised in preparation for another go at the door dropped heavily to the porch. Victor looked past the horse's head, looked up at the young woman slouched in the saddle, slouched so that her head cleared the porch ceiling. There were two other horses tied behind her mount.

"Well, there's something you don't see everyday," Victor said at last. "Can I help you, miss?"

Akkarin froze at the noises from outside and the kick on the door. As Victor moved to open it, he extended his senses outward and felt the presence of a woman and three animals, clustered right near the door. Something tickled the edge of his mind, and he reached out further, sensing another conscious mind, a way off the ground, watching the house.

He joined Victor at the door and peered out into the shadows cast by the streetlights. That tree, there. The lights did little more than cast shadows through the tree's branches, obscuring anything which might be hiding in it.

"I am sorry to interrupt," he said before the woman in the saddle could say anything, "but did you know that there's something watching you?"

He pointed to the tree and created a globe light above it, a bright sphere which quickly swelled to a useful size, casting the tree into stark clarity and revealing the bird of prey perched on a branch.

"A bird, apparently."

Kal looked at the two men, then at the globe of light.

“And here I thought three horses standing on a porch were going to weird people out a bit,” Kal stated before sliding off Romeo as he looked at the light and snorted. “That’s a red-tailed hawk. He’s probably following me for my leftovers.” She pulled out her bow.

“I’ve been living off the land, but sadly, I don’t know much about the edible parts of wild game. Red-tails will sometimes take the easy way out and scavenge, but they prefer live prey…this one might be a juvenile,” she said with a grin before sliding the bow back into her quiver. “Let me introduce myself Kalyca Rielly, people just call me Kal.” She held out her hand. “I do apologize for the wet horse smell, it’s his fault.” Kal nodded her head toward Romeo and he snorted and shook his head, slapping Kal’s arm with wet mane…again.

Well. There went the birdie surprise. Flying down to the ground behind the tree he changed to human form, bones growing and reknitting painfully until he appeared to be a teenaged boy. Well, he was a teenaged boy. English really did not accomodate for nothlits.

Thankfully he was not completely naked when he changed. Early on, the Animorphs as his friends had called themselves, had discovered that if they wore tight fitting clothing it would change with them. All he was wearing was a pair of black bike shorts and a long sleeved blue spandex shirt. It wasn't the most stylish, but then he cared more about not being naked than fashion.

"Don't shoot!" he called before stepping around the tree. He really wished he hadn't lost his watch right now. Hands in the air he stepped around the tree. "I am not a scavenger! Or juvenile!" he protested.

Kal blinked as she stared at the teenager, he was close to…she closed her eyes against the thoughts of her younger brothers before smiling and holding up her hands.

“You just pulled off the coolest trick I’ve seen in a while, I’m not going to shoot you,” she said as she tugged Romeo down off the porch and the three horses stared at the young man. “Sorry about the mistake, I did a semester of ornithology; it had a highlight on raptors.”

Kal took in the boy, he looked normal, but then again a bird vanished behind the tree and came out a human. She looked over her shoulder at the guy who made the glowing globe of light and the other man with him.

“You folks willing to take in a few strangers, even if one eats rodents and the other smells like wet horse?” Kal asked holding out a hand toward the boy. Romeo snorted before he walked over and began nibbling on Kal’s hair.

"Sure..." Victor said slowly, studying the young man. Had he been a bird just a moment ago? It seemed so, and it seemed incredible. But so much that had happened in his life in the last few months was incredible that he took it mostly in stride.

Victor looked at Kal. "Sure," he repeated, more normally. "Come on inside--both of you. I'll introduce you around. There are a number of folks inside."

"Wonderful," Kal said before looking at the teen. "Come on, Kiddo, we're in." She smiled as she patted Romeo.

"You three stay out here and try to do your business in the gutter," she joked and Romeo did his horsey laugh before beginning to graze. Kal untied Bess and Ace from Romeo's saddle and let the three begin to graze around the yard.

Kal started to the porch, stopping to look behind her at the bird-boy.

Aleila peered at the door to the hallway, unconciously trying to get some feelings from the two new arrivals in order to see their intentions. She couldn't get anything very clear, but what she got was mostly positive or else suprised.

She didn't know what to think of it... Was it normal for this many people to arrive at once? If so, that ment that there had to be more people alive than she'd thought; after all, what where the odds of so many people coming to the same place when there where so little of them to begin with?
She looked at Alexei and Marie to see their reaction to the arrivals.

Now that he had revealed himself, Tobias was having second and even third thoughts. He wasn't too sure about going inside. There seemed to be a lot of people in there and doors that closed. Leaving was high on his priority list if he needed to. He just wasn't as trusting as the girl with the horses. He'd lived from day to day, battle to battle just surviving for too long to put that aside.

It wasn't cold, so staying outside was even a possibility. Hawks did not migrate per se, but they did go to warm climates in the winters and it was not winter now. "I'm okay here," he finally managed. Putting complex sentences together was eluding him right now. This was the most he'd spoken, or even been human for that matter, in months.

Kal looked back at the boy and smiled sadly.

"It's okay to be nervous...just...here," she sighed, the kid was nervous, his eyes clearly spoke of his need to run. She just couldn't leave him out here unprotected. "I won't give a kid a gun, but I can spare a knife or two."

Kal rumaged through Romeo's bag before pulling out a large hunting knife in its sheath.

"Here, there are some not too nice things around since...it happened," she said, there was no reason to identify what "it" was. She offered the knife towards the teen. "If something too big for you to handle comes around, the horses are good at forming a circle and kicking, they'll protect you." She smiled gently and as reassuringly as possible. All three horses began to do their head nodding action and again Kal wondered if they weren't up to something.

Akkarin hadn't expected the bird to turn into a human, but having sensed its mind he wasn't as shocked as he would have expected. The bird had definitely been sentient, and that it turned out to be capable of assuming human form made a lot of sense, if he was willing to assume that there were magics done here which were unheard of on Akkarin's own world.

He held out a hand for Kal to shake.

"My name is Akkarin," he said, allowing his globe light to vanish. "Pleased to meet you."

Llaeseaf had been grateful to Alexei for giving him the excuse to leave the presence of Akkarin, if only for a short time as he had no intention of leaving Alexei alone to face Akkarin. The Djinni spent several minutes in the kitchen of the house he and Alexei had claimed just taking deep breaths and trying to wrestle his fears under control. Giving himself a mental shake, Llaeseaf rummaged through the pantry, not really knowing what he was supposed to bring back. Alexei, thankfully, did all their cooking.

The Djinni grabbed random things from the shelves and loaded them into a plastic hamper. Not only was he unsure what to bring, he had no idea how much he should take. He didn't want to deplete their supplies at the same time that he didn't want to appear as if him and Alexei were hording food. With a shrug, Llaeseaf decided what he'd tossed in the basket would have to do.

Llaeseaf appeared in the middle of the room he'd left not long ago and immediately searched for Alexei. He moved to the warrior, noticing that the front door was open and a woman was standing on the porch. A young boy stood a distance away on the lawn and Llaeseaf recognized the readiness to flee in the boy's posture. Neither of the two were familiar.

"Can somebody point me to the kitchen? I've brought some things that might round out a meal for everybody," Llaeseaf said.

What was he going to do with a knife and horses? He could always just fly away or, if there was time, go to battle morph and fight back. Or even bug morph and disappear. He had plenty of options without having to resort to weapons.

Why did she care anyways? The same reason you do, a little voice in the back of his mind responded, which he ignored. She was good to animals and he was an animal.

"Tobias," he said abruptly in response to Akkarin's introduction. Introductions meant something to him and helped put him at ease. "I'll go in if you keep the window open," he decided, trying to compromise. He wanted to be able to fly away if he needed to.

"It's down that hall and to the left," Victor said absently. Only afterward did he realize how casually he had reacted to the sudden reappearance of someone out of thin air. Shaking his head wryly, Victor turned his attention back to the new arrivals.

"Well, Kal, come on in," Victor said to the young woman.

Then he looked past her to the boy Akkarin was greeting. "I think we can manage that. Why don't you all come in and I'll open a window for you."

Victor returned to the great room and pushed the curtains aside, then opened one of the front windows. (I guess he really was a bird....)

Kal noticed the boy's...Tobias' reluctance to take the blade and slid it quickly into the saddlebag before walking up the porch to shake Akkarin's hand.

She smiled as the man opened the window, she looked over her shoulder at Tobias and waited.

Romeo sniffed Tobias' head before returning to grazing, the three horses wouldn't go anywhere now.

"I'm waiting for you, Kiddo," Kal said as she stood by the doorway giving Tobias her most encouraging smile.

"My name is Tobias," he repeated, shooting her a look before heading into the house. Everything told him this was a bad idea, but the past five years had been about making bad ideas work. What was one more. Absently, he petted the horses nose. As a human he couldn't acquire the horse, but perhaps he would another time, "And don't think I'm human."

Kal tried not to smirk as she headed into the house, her hand twitching with the urge to run her fingers through hair, ruffling it so it stood up funny, just to hear "Kaaaaal, stop it! I'm going to tell Mom!" She didn't touch Tobias though, he wouldn't threaten to tell Mom and Dad, he would probably bite, she chuckled at that thought.

"I think I knew that when you started off as a hawk," Kal said with a smile as she entered the house.

Romeo, Ace, and Bess all gave horsey chuckles as they grazed.

Llaeseaf nodded at Victor's directions, thankful he was heading in the opposite direction from where Akkarin was standing. The man still made him nervous and wary. The Djinni realized he needed to get his reactions under control but it would take a little time. He prodded Alexei and tilted his head towards the hall and the kitchen beyond, hefting the basket he carried. If Alexei wanted to join him in the kitchen, he'd follow.

Aleila watched as the green haired man, Llaeseaf, she reminded herself, reappeared from thin air. Something in her chest seemed to contract at the sight; As if she suddenly couldn't breath.

For a split second, long green hair changed into shorter hair, bound in a ponitail, and in her minds eye, she could see Damien turn around and smile at her as he quickly sat down in his bench, while the teacher scowled at him for being late even if he could teleport... Just that moment was anough to feel a painful ache in her chest and make her fight tears. She missed Damien so much...

It took her a moment to regain her composure. When she looked up, the room wasn't so quiet anymore. The three of them hadn't talked since Akkarin had left, not having much to say.

Now though, several people came in, among who the new ones. The boy... He felt strange. She wondered what he was and guessed she'd find out whenever he told them. The girl seemed nice anough though.

Tobias stood in the living room awkwardly, head cocked to one side curious. He thought he was the youngest there and wasn't sure what he was supposed to do or say. Adjusting to human vision was awkward, he almost felt like he couldn't see since he was so used to looking at things very far away and everything was so close in comparison. Blinking to try to get used to it he made a mental note to change to human more often so this wouldn't be a problem in the future.

"Does anybody have a clock or a watch?" he asked after a minute. He didn't want to stay human for too long and end up like this permanately.

Kal began to pat down her pockets, she used to have a watch, someplace. She opened her jacket, doing her best to keep the guns hidden as she patted down her inner pockets.

"Sorry, Kiddo, no such luck, haven't really been working on minutes and hours lately, more on, the sun's up or the sun's down," Kal said with a smile and a shrug. "You have someplace you need to be?" It seemed a bit weird for a hawk-turned-boy to want to know what time it was now that Kal actually thought about it. Then again, the definitions for weird and normal had changed a bit.

He was beginning to understand why Ax had enjoyed playing with sounds so much. After not speaking for long, they were kinda cool.

"Somehow I don't think your relationship is going to last with snake girl," Kal chuckled before looking around the room and finding a clock. "There's one. So, how did you all get together?"

She looked at the group, the man who had made the globe o' light was getting glared at by another man. There were a few women, Kal hoped they were down to Earth and not the 'OhmyGod we're going to be the bestest friends ever' kind of women.

"So, my name is Kal, I'm your basic human woman with a BS in Biology," she said as she played with her bow as it stuck out of her quiver. "I've been spending the last few months with a trio of horses, living on what I could hunt and salvage from barns and stores. That's why I've got the bows and arrows, better to hunt with a renewable source and all. That's all I've got, what about you?"

He pulled at the ponytail gathered at the nape of his neck, an old-fashioned style by Kyralian standards. "As you may have noticed outside, I'm a magician. Formerly the High Lord of the Magician's Guild of Kyralia, but I imagine they've given that title to someone else by now. I can't be much of a High Lord when I'm not there, can I?"

Snake girl? Ew! Tobias made a face at the thought of a dating a snake, relationships just don't last long when one wants to eat the other for dinner. Now that he had a clock he was more relaxed, he figured he'd been in morph for only about 10 minutes, plenty of time left.

"High Lord of magic where?" he asked, confused. He'd been out of school for a while, but he'd tried to keep his studies up using his friends textbooks and the library and he'd never heard of Kyralia, much less magicians guild. Magic outside of David Copperfield, did not exist, but he wasn't going to say that after seeing the man produce the ball of light. Or after his own displays, "It's been a while since I've been to school, but I've never heard of that."

"Another world," Akkarin said. "Which one, I couldn't say. Until I arrived here in the Deluge, I didn't know other worlds even existed. How to travel between them I can only speculate. It is my hope to one day find a way to cross that boundary."

He paused, watching the clock tick.

"But first, I have to regain my strength. I was weak when I arrived, and then the plague came... I exhausted myself trying to heal people, but then I contracted it myself. It took every scrap of magic I could gather to hold it off, and then I had to take more to cure myself." Black magic again. Would he ever be able to leave it behind? He'd killed a fair few trees up in that Canadian forest, draining their life energy to fuel his healing. Reluctant to kill animals to save himself, he'd avoided them until a bear decided to investigate his camp and had given up enough magic to finish eradicating the plague from his body.

"It's going to take me a while longer to completely recover from that," he finished.

Alexei sat on the floor with his back against the base of the couch. One knee propped up an elbow. A bemused look settled across his face—three horses, a bird changing man, an arcane magic user, a Syirim, a fire dijinni and a bunch of humans all at one house.

The shit doesn’t get any weirder than this.

He’d faced all sorts of foes from the mundane to the fantastical and he’d never seen this mishmash of people all in one spot. He glanced at Aleila. She seemed to be having bouts of difficulty with something internal. Every so often she’d pale and tremble a bit. The woman seemed to sway from calm to petrified.

Alexei scooted a bit closer to her, leaned over and whispered, “Relax, no one will hurt you while I’m around.” He patted her foot and stood. “I know Laeseaf’s culinary skills, do you want to go with me while I make sure he doesn’t burn down the house?” He assumed there would be fewer people in the kitchen.

Even if the numbers weren’t less, they couldn’t be stranger.

"I'm sure we can keep track of the time," Victor said, though he was puzzled by Tobias's problem. If he can only remain human for two hours, then why does he need a clock? Wouldn't he simply change again? Clearly Victor didn't have all the facts.

Victor shrugged, literally and metaphorically. Tobias seemed to be able to handle the problem, so he'd leave him to it. Now that everyone was inside, Victor closed the door. He returned to the great room, which was starting to get a little crowded with all the guests.

"I suppose we all ought to introduce ourselves again," Victor said. "My name is Victor Kruger. I'm from New York City originally, which may or may not mean anything to those of you from...other worlds. I've been living here for a few weeks, along with a few other people."

"My name is Tobias," he began nervously, unconsciously trying to ruffle his feathers and then getting annoyed when he realized he couldn't. So many people! "I'm um..."

He'd been here long enough to realize that this was not his world, they'd even won in his world, but the paranoia was a way of life that was hard to break. "I'm from California," There, that was vague enough, "I couldn't find anyone, so I began flying...I found Kal a few days ago and she found this place."

Bird or not, he had been human once and humans were ultimately social creatures. "I don't know what happened exactly...We won the war only for a disease to kill everyone less than a year later, I don't know if they're linked, I don't think so."

Kal was shocked, the bird-boy had been following her for a few days? She hadn't noticed a hawk, then again, her eyes had been for the creatures that had been popping up lately.

"Why didn't you introduce yourself sooner?" Kal asked, the question popping out of her mouth without her brain's permission. "I just mean, I wouldn't have hurt you." She felt a little foolish for questioning the boy, of course she would have been freaked out slightly, but as long as he didn't attack her, she'd give anyone a fair shot.

A golden head stuck itself in the window and Romeo whinnied for attention. Kal quickly crossed the room and began rubbing the horse's ears the way he enjoyed after dinner.

He shrugged, "No need to. I didn't want to be seen," he looked over at Akkarin, "You wouldn't've seen me tonight if it hadn't been for him," his mild tone had an accusatory note to it and almost a tinge of regret.

"And then you wanted to shoot me!" he continued, "What else was I supposed to do? Just leave and hope you have bad aim? Your aim is pretty good, you know!"

He clamped a hand over his mouth, he hadn't spoken this much in months. "And you interrupted my dinner," he concluded, almost petulantly. This was just like five years ago when he'd gained the ability to morph, his entire world turned upside down in an instant.

Kal couldn't help but be slightly offended, she'd never shoot a red-tailed hawk, her art teacher once brought one in as a model for portrait class.

"I wasn't going to shoot you, I only pulled out my bow to show them how I was living off the land," she couldn't help the pout on her face. "Wait...you've been watching me?" Her pout turned into a playful smirk. "Oh I get it, you've got a little crush, you Peeping Tom."

Outside Romeo snorted his horsey laugh, Kal really couldn't help herself, teasing teenage boys had been her favorite game for the last four years. Extra points were won if they got so upset their voices cracked and if they ran to a parent to tell.

Peeping Tom he might be, but Tobias did not crush on mere humans. He was far above that. Yeah, right. As if. "Didn't we already go through that I've been watching you?" he asked, unperturbed by her teasing. "And unless you have wings, keep dreaming." That wasn't completely true, or even partially true. He didn't have a crush on her, but he much prefered humans to birds of any sort. Not that she needed to know that. He was not going to tell them he had been human longer than he'd been a hawk, that was his secret.

Kal turned to Victor, refusing to give up ruffling the young man's feathers.

"You see, he's actually fighting to keep his infatuation with me secret," Kal sighed dramatically before plopping down on the floor in front of the window. "I can't help it, I have this powerful animal magnatism."

At that moment Ace stuck his nose through the window to gently chew on the hair on top of Kal's head.

"Really, how could any man resist me...covered in horse spit as I am," Kal chuckled as she rubbed the white nose affectionatly.

Aleila took it all in, tucked away in her little corner of the couch. The girl freightened her, to an extend. She was so... Overwhelming. Her feelings just poored out of her without any check and she was loud and so very active. She ment no harm though, not really, and the teasing was kind of funny to watch.
The boy was quieter. He seemed anxious around the others and that was a feeling that Aleila could very well relate too. That was about all she could make out of his feelings though, foreign as they where. She figured it would have something to do with the talk about him being a bird and all.

"I'm sorry for revealing you like that," Akkarin said to Tobias, "but when Kal knocked on the door, I reached out with my senses to see who it was, and I felt your mind as well. You didn't feel like an ordinary bird. I knew you were conscious. It seemed prudent to find out who and what you were."

Kal looked over at Akkarin and thought for a moment, it was a neat trick to be able to sense consciousnesses...er...whatever the plural of consciousness was.

"So how did you all find each other?" Kal asked as she looked at the room. "I mean, I moved south to avoid the bad weather and Romeo just started carrying me westward. In all actuality, I've been avoiding towns lately...I feel like an idiot saying this, but zombies have been a problem in towns. It just seems highly unlikely so many people would get together in this one house in this one town by chance."

If their situations were reversed he would have probably done the same thing, so he shrugged and nodded, the guy form of accepted apology. He didn't quite understand what Akkarin's powers were, but his mind not being like a normal bird's made sense.

"Gotta protect you and yours," he agreed readily. He understood that well enough.

(OOC: Refering to Alexeis post higher up on the end of the other treat)

“Relax, no one will hurt you while I’m around.”

Aleila looked up at the white haired man, Alexei. Even though she knew, cognitively, that noone would hurt her - she felt no hostile intend after all, much less against her - Alexeis words helped to soothe her emotions a bit... He was strong, that much she had picked up by now.

He patted her foot and stood. “I know Llaeseaf’s culinary skills, do you want to go with me while I make sure he doesn’t burn down the house?”

For a moment, she flinched away from the touch, quickly pulling her foot away, than his words registered and relieve flooded her.

She nodded, as much to Alexei as to herself. That sounded like a good idea... Mentally, she counted the number of people that should be in there, and came to a total of three. However, among those three wasn't some hyper woman or a magic-user that she still thought off as little scary. She didn't know why she didn't think that of the other two, obviously very strong and also foreign magicusers, but they'd both said it was alright and tried to soothe her, and she'd felt their good intentions. Besides, because their feelings where so foreign, it seemed to be easier to see theirs apart from her own.

Quickly, she got up as well, making her way to the kitchen door as unobtrusively as possible yet with practiced speed.

OOC: I've sorta been on unofficial hiatus, but I'm back....

Victor looked over at Kal. "Ami has been here all along," he said. Then he frowned thoughtfully. "Well, not all along. She found her way here while there was still one survivor. A young girl who died of an unrelated condition." He didn't have to specify unrelated to what. The world would forever be divided in time between before and after Fate's Handmaiden.

"Ami stayed on alone. About a month ago I was passing through--not on my way anywhere in particular, just...traveling and staying out of big cities. Anyway, I stopped to play on a piano in the local music shop and Ami found me there."

Victor gestured toward the kitchen. "Not an hour later, Michelle and Marie turned up, also passing through. But the four of us were more people than any of us had seen in weeks, if not months. So we all stayed."

Victor shrugged. "That's about it. The four of us stayed together rather than remain alone. Over the next month, a handful of other people turned up singly or occasionally traveling in twos or threes. But they can tell you their own stories, I suppose."

Kal looked at Victor a moment and nodded.

"I imagine all the stories are relatively similar. It...happened and no one could stand living in the place that was so familiar but so empty," Kal said, rubbing her eyes as Ace rubbed his mouth on her head. She gently pushed the horse's head back out of the window and he grunted.

"I forgot what it was like to talk to someone and get a response, I'm kind of missing before...," she stated with a sad smile. Fate's Handmaiden, Kal could feel it hanging over the room like a layer of smoke. "I've missed people, I have to confess, I think I'm going to stay in town, but I'll be looking for a house I can set up like a barn." Romeo whinned. "I won't leave Bess, Ace, and Romeo outside all the time."

Finally relaxing enough to sit down, Tobias initially sat indian style on the floor before fidgeting and sticking his legs out in front of him. There were so many positions he could be in and he couldn't decide on which one he wanted.

"I'll stay...if you'll have me," he was waiting for the rejection even though he knew intellectually it most likely wasn't going to come from this group. "I don't need a house or anything. I'll find somewhere," like a nice large tree, preferably near a field or park where he could find food as well. Hawks were little trouble.

"There are plenty of houses to choose from," Victor said to Kal. Even some with barns if you're willing to live a ways out toward the edge of town." He grimaced. "Of course, some of those may still have bodies in them. We've spent the last couple of weeks policing the town and burying bodies--but we haven't gotten all of them yet."

Victor grinned at Tobias. "If a tree is enough for you, that's no problem--but neither is a house if you want one. We've got plenty. You could always keep the ground floor locked and just leave a window open above so you can come and go."

"I'll scout around, I don't want someplace that won't be healthy for the horses, I'd never get over the guilt if one of them got sick," Kal stated. "I'll look for one of the houses where people were...um...did you see the people vaporize? I saw several people just...poof, like dust."

Her voice choked up at the end and the tears filled her eyes at the memory. Her mother's face suddenly gone, it had been horrific, what could be worse? The slow, painful deaths of her brothers. Kal rubbed her eyes and coughed.

"So you don't all live here then, is this the main...base for the new community?" she asked, looking out the window so the fresh air could help clear her flushed face.

Birds had no need for houses, he hadn't lived in one in years, although he had kept a duffel bag of clothing and others odds and ends in case he needed them. He had abandoned it months ago since he couldn't carry it while flying. It was just things, he could always get more if he needed too.

Shrugging, he replied, "It's not like I have stuff to keep safe," all he had were the clothes on his back really. Unless he found a watch. He'd keep that safe. "I travel light."

Kal nodded at Tobias' comment. She'd been traveling light too, hell, the most she had was food and ammo.

"Well I suppose you folks are getting ready for dinner, I won't impose," she said as she got up. "I need to find a place to keep the horses safe." She held out her hand to Victor. "Thanks for having me. I'll let you know where I'm staying once I find a safe spot."

Watching the clock like a hawk, no pun intended, Tobias stood up and stretched. "I'm going," he announced, heading for the window. "I'll be back," he was hungry and he wanted dinner without imposing.

Quickly, he sat on the windowsill and morphed back into a hawk, flying away. Let them talk about that.

Kal watch the hawk-boy go with a slight smile.

"Kids these days," she said with a smile. Shaking Victor's hand before going to the door. "I hate to just drop in and then run, but I want to find a safe place to sleep. I'll contact you after I find a place to call home....I'll try to keep the horses off the porch."

With that Kal headed to the doorway and smiled.
