nyc@sauderline.comThis community is for visitors and people new to NYC to meet each other and to ask questions. Use this community to introduce yourself, find friends, find roommates, find out how to get an apartment in the first place.
Ask all those little annoying simple questions that may seem stupid to someone who's been here for a week, but make life a lot easier if know them: How can you tell if a taxi is available? What's the difference between an express and a local train? What (and where) is Tkts? Remember kids - there's no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid tourists!
And ask the more obscure questions: Why do some subway stations have green lights at the entrances while others have red? What is that random number counter sign in Union Square? What is the little yellow light on the trunk of cabs for?
Post things you learn about the city - your favorite club or bar, the best place to go rollerblading, etc.
And post stories of your adventures in NYC, good and bad - stuck on a subway for 3 hours, mugged in Central Park, helping a sweet old lady cross the street.
People "old" to the city are strongly encouraged to join in order to dispense their wisdom and knowledge of the Big Apple. Do your part to cut down on the number of clueless people crowding the sidewalks and slowing your commute home!
Other LJ communities of interest to new (and old) NYCers include
nycnobody,
newyorkers,
nyc_for_free,
nyc_real_estate,
nyc_cuisine, and
nycroommates.
A couple interesting links include:
Craigslist.org - THE NYC online classifieds source, for apartments, jobs, romance partners, you name it.
Sublet.com - Another excellent apartment rental site, but you have to pay for contact info, between $20-$100 for 90 days access.
New in town Meetup.
White House Hostel - a popular hostel
Hostels.com - An excellent listing of most hostels in the city.
Metropolitan Transport Authority, operator of the Subway and buses in NYC.
Hop Stop - Get from point A to point B on the subway and buses. (Rumor has it the buses aren't as accurate?).
Straphangers.org - Another subway mapping site, plus lots of other subway information.
Trips 123 - an official "real time" website operated by the various transit organizations, offering real-time information on nearly all of the mass transit and highway options.
NYC Map Portal - The City's official online map, amazingly accurate.
The maintainer of this community is
stejcruetekie, himself a new resident of the city, and co-moderator is
kibbles, a life long New Yorker.
Enjoy!
