I actually use this line all the time.
    Meme taken from [info]alice_bunnie:

When you see this, post in your own journal with your favorite quote from The Princess Bride. Preferably not "As you wish" or the Inigo Montoya speech.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Free speech as long as you agree with our basic premises
Here's a quote from a conservative writer that perfectly illustrates the main problem that I have with most conservatives these days:

"What sets conservatives, and by extension the GOP, apart is that we have always encouraged vigorous debate and the civil discourse necessary for the continuation of this American experiment. It is the foundation of our republic and the catalyst to our best ideas. But we succeed in our intellectual pursuits only because they stand firmly on the solid rock of our morality, our spirituality and our admission of and submission to the God that grants our souls the right to breathe. The sinking sand of liberal dogma will never be a suitable substitute." Doug Patton (source here)

In other words, the freedom of debate and discourse which is the foundation of the "American experiment" can exist only if it is grounded in faith in "God as conservatives understand Him"; there can be no such freedom to question those basic premises.

After twenty years or so of being enrolled in the Republican party (after I left what was then called the "Free Libertarian Party" in New York State, now called just the Libertarian Party), I have finally come home to the Democratic Party of my youth, and while I still don't agree with all the policies of ANY party, I think I'm probably here to stay.

    Currently meme.
    C/o [info]zahryn.

Current favourite track: Hips Don't Lie - The Fray.
Current favourite perfume: Paul Smith's Rose.
Currently should really be: Screaming under a railway bridge with a train passing by overhead.
Currently missing: August, when I was happier.
Currently looking forward to: Dinner, which I will be cooking in a short while.
Current favourite smell: Freshly baked bread.
Currently wondering why: Big bankers get away with millions of dollars/pounds in bonuses, while their companies go bankrupt, stock exchanges all over the world go into free fall, and there's going to be 2 million Brits on the dole by Xmas.
    Currently waiting for: The revolution.
Currently amused by: Hips Don't Lie - The Fray.
Currently bemused by: The prospect of watching Paul Merton in India later.
Currently reading: Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks.
Currently worried about: The way in which having 2 million Brits on the dole by Xmas will almostly definitely increase intolerance towards immigrants, of which I am one.
Current favourite recent memory: Not getting out of breath despite walking up to the 4th floor of the York placement - lots of steep stairs. This pleases me, because several years ago I would have been gasping.

    Much with placement-related issues.
Got up at half 6 this morning, to make it to line management at my Leeds placement. Asked if I could take CORE data from there (they use CORE already, so I'm already on CORE there) to the Gestalt CORE Project. My line manager will think about it.

Then I came back to York. Had lunch in town. Got a new pair of shoes - I am wearing my current Skechers shoes to death, and need a 2nd pair for work. So I picked up another pair on sale. Then I got 2 tubes of paint (running out of gold acrylics, and I tend to use that fairly often, and I also wanted a larger tube of violet. I could mix that, but then I just go through rose madder and some other blue very quickly, and I'm running out of rose madder too... So it made sense to me to just get a large tube of violet. Would have got more rose madder as well, but I didn't like the look of the paint in the tube. It's started to separate out. I'd rather wait till they restock it.)

Then I went into my York placement for an induction. Sounds good, though I think we're going to have an interesting time working out my supervision ratios. Arcane stuff around supervision hours, ratios, etc. )

But hey! The York placement is fine with my taping, if clients give consent. And the counselling manager there is also willing to look at info on the Gestalt CORE Project. They currently make partial use of CORE already, so again, it shouldn't be very hard for me to just get a bit extra done that way.

And now I'm going to fall over from tired.

Arizona Tax Payers -- Listen up!
Well, it is the time of year when I start hitting everyone one up for money for something other than my cancer walk.

We'll start with tax credits (fundraisers -- pizza and cookie dough! -- will come later in the week!):

Arizona is quite unique in that it allows you to apply a tax credit to the school of your choice. So, for all you anarcho/libertarian friends (which is pretty much most of you) who support at the least the idea of being able to line-item your taxes, this is a start.

You can read about the tax credit in an IRS publication here or in a more casually written explanation at the Institute for Better Education's website here. The particulars for donating on behalf of a charter school are different than that information (in that the limit is lower, for one - up to $200 for individuals and up to $400 for married filing jointly) but the principle is the same.

PLEASE CONSIDER GIVING YOUR TAX CREDIT TO JET'S SCHOOL to support extra curricular activities. Why pay -- and perpetuate paying -- the State when your money can go directly to kick ass school things instead? Monies donated will go toward various activities such as field trips, fine arts, visual arts, athletics and clubs (like the community service one, and the lego league, and robotics!).

You can even specify which specific activity you wish to apply your money to. "Down with legos, up with the Art Club!" "Screw the athletes, give it to the Robotics geeks" "Philanthropy as lifestyle, go Community Service Club"

Srsly people, this is a no brainer. It is a dollar for dollar credit. So, if you pay AZ taxes or have someone living in state that does (parents, friends, etc.) who don't have children and/or schools of their own to donate to, please leave me a comment and I will let you know how to go about it.

Won't you do it for the childrens?!

    Birthday, Logan, and Biden
Happy birthday to Marie, currently known as [info]fuzzyparadox!

New approach to Logan: speak softly (since I don't impress him or anyone else when I try to yell at him) and carry a BIG water-sprayer.

I just found out they're making a movie of "Marley and Me." Too bad I can't take Logan to see it.

Oh, and to paraphrase something a Republican friend said about that other candidate for Vice-President, is it OK if I'm developing a little crush on Joe Biden? :-)

    Indoor Bark Control
Logan has discovered that the "PetSafe indoor bark control" device is the "enemy" that makes that nasty noise that only he and Maddie can hear when he barks. His solution to the problem? Confront the device head-on and bark at it.

    Tired now.
Long day in Birmingham. Around 6 hours on trains (it's about 3 hours there, 3 hours back), so I've just got home. I'm glad I went. I feel like I've got bits and pieces to chew on and digest. And it was nice to see people. And now I'm very tired. I fell asleep for a while on the way home, and then woke up and couldn't get back to sleep. Thank goodness for music to listen to.

Got take out on the way home. Will eat that shortly, as I'm too tired to cook.

    Star Wars Saturday!
I sat on the couch with my two sons this morning (the youngest in my lap) and watched two episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Watching lush CGI Star Wars adventures on a Saturday morning with my boys was a treat. I've read a few reviews of The Clone Wars, and they've all been negative. Pity those who never outgrow their hip cynicism.

I'm thrilled at the prospect of this series. George Lucas employed an army of artists to create characters, ships, costumes, locations and such to flesh out the three prequel films. It would be a shame not to use all of that work to provide fans with some additional adventures in that universe.

I particularly liked the on-going reminder that "the Old Republic" was not defeated by the Empire but rather it became the Empire. The Republic warships are early versions of the Imperial Star Destroyers that we see in episodes IV - VI. The chest plates on the Jedi generals are the same later worn by black-clad Darth Vader. Those Republic warships are commanded by the same British-accented admirals that later command the Imperial Navy.

I like that when the clone troopers take their helmets off we can see that they've made attempts to establish themselves as individuals with different hair cuts. Also, we learn that the republic makes every effort to evacuate wounded clone troopers and provide them with medical attention.

Most of all, I like the expanded canvas that a TV series provides. If you like Star Trek: The Next Generation, imagine if the only Trek material featuring Jean-Luc Picard you ever saw was Star Trek: Generations, Insurrection, and Nemesis. Would the phrase, "Tea: Earl Gray, hot," even ring a familiar chord in your consciousness? A TV series allows for so much more depth of character and complexity of story than a movie or even a series of movies can.

Perhaps I had the advantage of genuine child-fan enthusiasm in the room that I could tune into, but I have zero truck with critics who claim that this series is ruining their child-hood Star Wars memories.

The boys are now playing Lego Star Wars on the PS3.

    fragment of the Tracey Fragments
I hadn't previously heard of the novel/movie The Tracey Fragments, but I came across this quote:

When things happen to people, they radiate a light. Because they have a picture caught inside them. Because they were there and you weren't. And because you only got a piece. And because all you can do is shrink and blow up that one tiny piece.

If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now (even if we don't speak often or ever), please post a comment with a COMPLETELY MADE UP AND FICTIONAL memory of you and me.

It can be anything you want - good or bad - BUT IT HAS TO BE FAKE.

    Last night's paintings.
Actually feel worse today than I did yesterday. Much more sneezing and snuffling. Don't know if that's me coming down with something else, or if it's just because I'm tired. At any rate, I had things I wanted to do today, but spent most of the day sleeping, and dreaming about tiny, tiny little people and funerals. The dreams about funerals were oddly comforting.

Tomorrow is going to be difficult. My train out of York leaves at 6:16 am. So I've got a very early start - early enough that I might not actually get any sleep tonight. I've got to take good care of myself doing all this stuff, so while I'd rather have been getting more done today, it's by no means bad that I've had more rest instead.

After this I'm going to make dinner.
