Netflix petition

Not that online petitions actually result in change, what the heck...

I came across a link to the Netflix petition on conspiratorsb's recent post. (Which I found in the links to the Netflix blog regarding the profile feature going away. Netflix removing the profiles feature does seem like something the past LJ management would have done, doesn't it? Ha ha. The petition has over 1,200 "signatures" so far. The Netflix blog is clocking in at nearly 600 (mostly negative) comments right now.

I wouldn't mind if the petition and comments influence Netflix to change its mind. The Profiles feature allows my household to maintain separate selections of discs for each individual to watch with their own rankings and personalized recommendations. There's no need to share a login and juggle (or fight over) who gets the next disc. If the Profiles feature really has to go away, the least Netflix could do is provide a simple migration tool to automate moving the sub-account queues (and rankings!) to a new subscription. I'm sure that would still leave some people disappointed, but I'll bet it would quiet the angry hornets nest reaction they're getting right now.

Does this beat all or what? They're improving service by taking this away! The profiles was the best feature for sharing the subscription in my house. It worked just great.

Update: as of right now, you can still create new profiles and there's no mention of the impending doom. There also doesn't seem to be any mention of letting people split off a profile and make it into a standalone account with its own subscription. I know that, in the past, Netflix has explicitly stated that this is not possible.

I noticed today that there's a new section on your queue for Instant Viewing.

When I click it, I see some titles have a date in the Availability column. "Until May 15 2008" for 3 or 4 films.

I've never used the Instant Viewing feature, and I think I have unlimited viewing if I ever do use it. So what's that date for?

Does that mean that on May 15, those 3 titles will no longer be available for IV, or won't be available from Netflix at all?

Format War - Petition

Save HD-DVD! (Warner Brothers, The Consumer Has Not "Clearly" Chosen Blu-Ray)

To: Warner Brothers, Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures
Dear High Def movie fans, I'm starting this petition in order to support HD-DVD and hopefully save it, and to show Warner Brothers that the consumer has not "clearly" chosen Blu-Ray. Warner Brothers switched to Blu-Ray exclusive claiming that its the best thing for the consumer, but how about all the consumers that bought HD-DVD movies and hardware for the holidays, or all the loyal HD-DVD fans like myself that own Warner HD-DVDs? Warner just screwed them all.

HD-DVD is more alive than ever, with cheaper hardware prices, and better technological capabilities, both of which are better for the consumer. I guess Warner feel higher prices and less features are better. The only thing Blu-Ray has going for it is 20GB of extra storage space, and a big name like Sony backing it up. HD-DVD on the other hand has PIP, web-enabled features, in movie menus, and much more. And if extra space is needed, use another disc, big deal.

So please, sign this petition, and lets get as many votes as we can so we can hopefully change Warner's mind to return to being format neutral, or go HD-DVD exclusive. This would also show the remaining HD-DVD exclusive studios, Universal & Paramount, that HD-DVD still has supporters, thus they shouldn't switch to Blu-Ray. We have a chance to save a superior format from collapsing under the weight of the greedy Sony corporation and its inferior Blu-Ray format, let's do it!

originally found on consumerist.com

Hey guys! I'm not a Netflix user (yet), but I'm very interested and have a few questions.

I'm a poor college student, but I love movies and theater, so I'm always getting a friend to drive me all around town looking for DVD's and resorting to buying rare movies online just to be able to see them at all. I've wanted Netflix for ages, but I don't think I can afford to pay for it myself on a regular basis and my parents and roomates don't watch movies enough to be interested in sharing the costs with me.

Anyway! My question is: How easy is it to cancel your account and sign back up? If I knew I wouldn't get screwed over in the process, I would sign up for maybe one or two months at a time when I could afford it, then cancel, then sign up again when I could afford it, etc. Will that piss them off or something? Haha. Do any of you guys do that or have you? Do you sign up for a certain amount of time or just sign up until you want to stop it?

Thanks, everyone. :]

the "New Releases" debacle

The suits at Netflix decided that the number 1 user problem is having to wait for new releases, and their solution was to remove the Releasing This Week page!

You've seen the mess they've got up there instead - it only shows four titles at a time, you have to click to see the next four titles, click again to see the next four, click again...., and some of the titles are months and months old! The intent (according to their official blog) is to show only titles that are in stock at the warehouse in order to reduce customer disappointment at having to wait for a title.

To people like me this is a disaster. When I log in I go straight to the New Releases section and look at Releasing This Week and also at New On DVD (which lists everything! tv episodes, really old movies finally making it to DVD, and various weird items. I love it.) I get to review scores of new titles in three or four minutes and quickly add the ones that interest me to my queue. Most of them will go at the bottom - every few visits I'll see one I want to move up top. And maybe I'll have to wait to get it if I move it to the top. It happens. I'll live. But they've killed the lists. Stupid gits.

Things to do:

Read all about it at the official Netflix blog: http://blog.netflix.com/ . Over 900 comments so far on the two relevant entries.

Leave a comment of your own: https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=2765056849626104020&postID=8984271440415010310&pli=1 (use the drop-down box in the comments sign-in and you can use your livejournal login to post!)

Sign the petition: http://www.petitiononline.com/netflix/petition.html Over 1000 signatures so far. (Michael, the Netflix employee who manages the blog, states that Netflix brass are watching the petition.)

Super double-secret backdoor link to the old New Releases pages (but Releasing This Week looks much thinner than normal): http://www.netflix.com/AllNewReleases?lnkctr=NavAllNewReleases

Consider whether one of Netflix' competitors can better serve your needs. http://www.greencine.com/main or https://www.blockbuster.com/signup/s/plan .

*daha*
