ISTVAN KANTOR is about to begin reading his manifesto at the AGO's
Andy Warhol show right in front of Warhol's RED DISASTER.
If you hurry up you can still catch part of the surprise-intervention
and take a picture with your hidden digital camera of Kantor's
bloody face for the frontpage of your newspaper or website.
Kantor will tell you that Warhol's RED DISASTER is his own work
of art, created with his own blood and many other artists' blood (see
Kantor's attached AGO Gift Statement)
He is about to donate a vial full of his own blood to the
permanent collection of the AGO. This small but very powerful
sculptural piece contains the spirit of Warhol and many other artists' spirit
In order to figure the end of Kantor's surprise action you have to
inquire information from the AGO and see if Kantor gets arrested or
welcomed.

For a long time now art has become a controlled industry under the dictatorship of museums and related institutions. They deplore the public's lack of taste, they educate us to pretend to like and admire the great works of art with which we no longer have any connection. The artist is just a toy, even if she/he is a warrior, in the hand of the dominating forces. Silenced and reanimated. Imprisoned and awarded. Banned and welcomed. Condemned to death and praised. Executed and resurrected.
While Warhol's Red Disaster, like any other great work of art, has in it all the possibilities for subverting the rules, for stirring up revolt, today it is nothing but an object signifying the emptyness of death, a piece of property in a mausoleum. That's why it is a perfect work of art for a deadly freakshow like this, and that's why it is also a perfect background for making this statement an even more deadly manifesto.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I sincerely consider Andy Warhol's Red Disaster my own work of art and therefore I declare that I created it with the use of my own and many other artists' blood. This is not just a gesture of post-modern appropriation, sanctified plunder or intellectual vandalism but it represents full identification with the creative force of a work of art. With this I validate its actuality and I add a new ideal value to its meaning.
It is a trendy fashion among the bureaucratic media and the co-operating intelligentsia to either ridicule and condemn an effort such as this, an unofficial intervention that compensates for their reinforced dictatorship, or to pretend that nothing has happened besides the desperate frenzy of a raging freak.
Therefore I extend my gesture and statement with another deadly surprise. Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm very happy to announce that I donate a beautiful sculptural piece to the museum's permanent collection: a vial full of my own, fresh blood, signed and entitled DEADLY GIFT, valued at $1million per millilitre. This tube of blood contains the spirit of Andy Warhol and other dead artists' spirit (see enclosed list)!
May it be the proper pride of your museum!

is a recepient of the 2004 Governer General's Award for Visual and Media
Arts. He was also arrested and jailed a number of times for his art-actions in

Headquarterz: Reordering the Machines
An Interactive Workshop Featuring Istvan Kantor
February 6th – 10th, 2006
Focusing primarily on aspects of machinery systems and their relation to contemporary culture - including technological machinery, the machination of society, and the body-machine – Headquarterz will provide 15-20 UWO Visual Arts students with an opportunity to both consult individually, and work collectively with Govenor General Award winning multi-media artist, Istvan Kantor. This project is intended to ‘activate’ and ‘energize’ the ArtLab space while allowing the students to exercise their practical skills and engage with the specific theoretical issues involved in Kantor’s work.
Utilizing elements of video, installation, and performance Kantor and the students will occupy the ArtLab space for the duration of the workshop where they will be expected to accumulate research data, collect materials, and – in consultation with Kantor – create original material based on the theme, “Reordering the Machines”. During the course of the workshop the students, together with Kantor, will design a final project, which could take the form of an exhibition, situation, performance, or public gesture involving the work of both Kantor and the students, to be presented on Friday February 10th. The workshop will be heavily documented with both video footage, still photographs, and written responses to allow for the possibility of a zine-style independent publication. Following this, the project may be the subject of an open review panel composed of writers and art historians from the Toronto/London area (ie. David Liss, Riva Symko). This would allow members of the immediate community to respond to both the work of Kantor, and the final Headquarterz project.

i had brunch with al the other day and he was telling me how archeology in the future will require upward digging. the diggers of the next millenium will have to scale large skyscrapers in order to study our primitive society. billboards, park statues, ambulance vehicles... all part of our latent liquid history. all in all, he said to leave the stuff you want untouched as far beneath the earth as possible since the vertical gravediggers will be looking through the office buildings in newyork, chicago, and such. i mean, that's giving hope there will be an earth in the next millenium.

At the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art;
Istvan Kantor's benefit sale at MOCCA seems to be turning into a major
event,
an important appraisal of Queen West art, circa 2005.
Kantor received the Governor General Award because he's a catalyst
who makes things happen; it's as though Queen street was waiting for
someone to bring artists together in a local Documenta... and they
came with their work.
The show changes daily as pieces are sold and new works go up on the
wall;
a creative dynamic is taking hold, "buzz" of a vital social-cultural
event.
As a local piece of art history, the show is being documented and

A group show "of the best and the worst" it's taking on elements of a
Fellini movie as the square in front of MOCCA turns into performance
space... while the walls inside present every concept of styles and
ideas.
Worth attention are prices. Large paintings of the $10,000 + range

As a solidarity benefit for Istvan Kantor, everyone including major
collectible names
such as Napoleon Brousseau have priced their work mostly in the low
$100,
with many artists contributing at least a few good pieces priced at
$50.
Miklos Legrady's performance, slashing of a valuable portrait

Istvan Kantor's most recent project INVISIBLE MONUMENT, where he will mix his blood into the concrete to be used for the construction of the new AGO, is gaining sympathy among Queen West artists.
A group exhibition intitled THE BLOOD MUST CONTINUE TO FLOW, hosted by
the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (MOCCA) located on Queen street West, will be the next demonstration of Kantor's evolving campaign to align the local art scene and public on his side. At the press conference on Tuesday, Aug 30 at 2pm., Kantor and his Konspirators will give statements on issues of artistic freedom and institutional authority to introduce the exhibition.
The show will take place at the MOCCA from Aug. 30st to Sept. 4th and is
open for participation to anyone interested in Kantor's critical attitude,
anyone brave enough to join the garage sale style conspiracy event produced by the controversial GG Award winning art-crime mastermind himself.
Among the confirmed artists-participants are Napoleon Broussau, Eldon
Garnet, Louise Liliefeldt, Miklos Legrady, John Abrams, Phil Anderson,

Surprising developments concerning
Istvan Kantor's clandestine project to integrate his
blood
into the foundation and walls of
the transforming Art Gallery of Ontario
and the AGO's current response to his plans
will be announced at Kantor's press conference
on Tuesday, Aug 2nd, at 2.30pm at the Drake Hotel.
Kantor will officially announce the making of
INVISIBLE GIFT / INVISIBLE MONUMENT,
an unusual blood-sculpture he designed for
the new Art Gallery of Ontario.
The presentation will include video and
photographic illustrations of the project,
as well as visual documentation of Kantor's
Blood Campaign extended with a live
performance by the artist.
Writer/Critic Daniel Baird, editor of the
