I was cleaning my office, and came across a postcard in Mike's handwriting. It's postmarked 28 June 1994, and depicts a doorway from the abbey church of Moutiers-Saint-Jean, near Dijon. The text is as follows:

"Experiamus tempus mirabilis.
Volanus hic sua tua.
Camera nostra propinque
comitatus conventus.

Amo, amas, amat,

M. Elise
Teresa

[obscured by Post Office fu, but presumably] Patrick"

Awww. My Latin is just about good enough for that silliness.

Yes, it's nicely calibrated, isn't it? I still had a smidge of Latin when I got it.

I'm pretty sure the first two lines are "Having wonderful time; wish you were here," but I don't know Latin and can't puzzle out the last two lines.

You are correct. I don't know Latin either, but I think that the last bit can roughly be rendered as, "Our room is near the train station." I await correction from the more knowledgeable.

I'd say that your translations are accurate.
We are having a wonderful time. Wish you were here.
Our room is near the train station.
I love, you love, he loves,

Now it is up to Elise, Teresa & Patrick to remember if the Latin was all Mike's or if they were part of the translation team.

Thanks for the confirmation.

I strongly suspect that it was a collaborative effort.

Wow, I have no memory of that. I should clarify that we were never anywhere in Europe with Mike and Elise, alas.

They did visit us at our then-place on Staten Island sometime in the mid-1990s; I remember a wonderful evening of reading Tom Stoppard's Arcadia aloud. This may date from that visit. Did the postcard have an American stamp?

You know, I was wondering about that myself, but figured you might have been over there for a convention and just joined them for a day or two.

But yes, indeed! The postcard has an American stamp.
