Subject:Death taking on an extracurricular job as most beloved anthropomorphic personification (wild ideas)

Music:Cranes: Oreste et Electre.
I know this isn't really the place to post such a thing, and I know that technically I'm probably breaking rules, but after the very short blog post I wrote today I wanted to share its essence with some people who'd probably indulge me in my silly but hopefully funny little idea.

Death is a favourite character of a lot of people, sociable, wise and likable as she is. This is probably the main reason why my mind immediately jumped to her when I thought up the plan that if any concept in today's fiction - ranging from novels to poetry to comics and graphic novels, whichever term you prefer - deserved a muse for its own, it would be intertextuality. The storytelling in Sandman is masterfully done, integrating many ideas from mythology and other works of fiction in its body, whilst never becoming too dense or compact. And Death herself adds her share, of all the characters she truly is the master of intertextuality. (Interesting notion if you consider that she herself is a fictional character...) If there was to be a tenth muse of intertextuality, what would be her name? That is my question, so you see this is all purely creatively hypothetical funny fanfictionesque in nature. And if a job opening would appear, I'd hire Death immediately for the job!

I know, it hasn't got much to do with Sandman at all - I might however write out a much more coherent post about my deep-rooted love for the many faces of intertextuality in Sandman in a near future where thesis doesn't bother me anymore - but for the sake of combined love for anthropomorphic personifications, anyone who'd entertain the idea of modern muses, entertain it here for one second!

 Hello everyone,

Not having much time and experience with photoshop and the likes, I set out to find some nice icons for my usb keys and hd's of my favourite subjects, without much result. I was wondering if anyone knows where to find well-rendered mac icons of Neil Gaiman's Sandman, and/or in general mythologically inspired themes?

Many thanks in advance!

Hey everyone, this may be a long shot. I've been looking for a nice, big picture of the key in Mirrormask for a tattoo. I love Neil, and I love keys, so it seemed like a good way to collaborate the two :) However, all I can find are little tiny images in avatars, which does me no good.
If anyone has/could post a large photo, I would be forever grateful!

(12 tales to tell | Tell me a story)

Hi there. :) My name's Wendy and I'm a senior in high school. In English, we have a final Senior Project, which involves selecting a favorite author and writing an 8-12 page paper, which includes:
An in-depth analysis of three chosen works by the author
An in-depth analysis of the author as a writer
A biography of the author
An in-depth style-analysis of one short scene from one of the previously mentioned three books
An original short story or poem mimicking the author's overall writing style

I've decided on Neil Gaiman, of course. :) The three books I'm doing are American Gods, Neverwhere, and Anasi Boys. Since I love Neil Gaiman and I love literary criticism, I intend to go rather above and beyond the minimum requirements for this project. I'm currently rereading Good Omens, which will be involved (I'm trying to decide whether to do an analysis of it over Anasi Boys, because I haven't read Anansi Boys in years, I don't own a copy and I have not been able to find one at any book store in the area - the fact that it's co-written by Terry Pratchett is something I've discussed with my teacher...) somehow. So yeah. I am really excited about writing this. (Unfortunately I have my Physics exams tomorrow and I should be studying for that instead of reading/taking notes/etc.)

I bought The Neil Gaiman Reader and have found it to be incredibly helpful. I've searched my school's data systems for articles and reviews and outside criticism, but most of it is related to Coraline or Sandman (and there's not a lot of it to begin with, as our school's data system seems to think I should be writing papers on Shakespeare or one of the Bronte sisters or Aldous Huxley or something). So I'm wondering if anyone around here knows where I can find essays or in-depth analysis on American Gods, Neverwhere, Anansi Boys, and/or Good Omens. The more sources I have, the better my paper can be. I would love to include his short stories, his comics, his essays, etc. but unfortunately the whole project is due on the 19th and I just don't think I've got enough time to do that. But still, I'd be happy to read sources that are about other than the four novels I'm looking at... but those four are my main focus. So.

Thanks you guys!

Subject:Luminato Scrapbook, Anyone?
Posted by:mandolin_minuet.

Hello fans all!

Specifically Toronto fans (I love all of you, of course, but you'll see why the special shout-out...), as you're probably aware, Neil will be gracing us with his presence on June 8th for the Luminato Arts Festival. Very exciting, as he doesn't venture up here all that often (at least, that I know of). :D

A friend and I were lucky enough to get tickets for the show and we were wondering if there were any other fans here who were going, and whether you'd all be interested in contributing to a fan scrapbook gift to give to Neil at the autograph session afterwards? The two of us were thinking of making one in a sort of "Toronto Below" theme to thank him for coming (and hopefully make it memorable enough for him to come back more often!!) and we thought it'd be nice if it was more representative of the larger fanbase here. The idea would be any letter/postcards/photos-with-messages that you'd care to send, and we can all meet at some point in May to get them, and the two of us would arrange it into a scrapbook. Details to be worked out once we figure out how many people might be interested in this project.

So... consider this an interest-gauging post. Any takers? :D

Subject:poster and chapbook, both signed by Neil, in benefit auction
Posted by:elisem.
Time:9:38 pm.
Over at the [info]accessiblehouse auctions, I just added a Mr. Hero poster signed by Neil, and an EXTREMELY rare copy of the sampler chapbook for NOW WE ARE SICK, also signed by Neil. Only 150 of the sampler were printed, so it's pretty unusual to find one on the market. Information on the items is here, and there are photographs linked to the posts.

Thanks, and thank you very much for looking and bidding. It's a very good cause.

Subject:RAVENS IN THE LIBRARY - featuring work by Neil Gaiman
Posted by:fireriven.
Time:7:31 pm.
Mood: excited.
TOP AUTHORS & ARTISTS BECOME "RAVENS IN THE LIBRARY"

World-famous fantasy authors and artists have joined together to produce a limited-edition benefit book entitled RAVENS IN THE LIBRARY.

This exclusive collection – featuring Newbery Award-winner Neil Gaiman (of Coraline and Sandman fame), Spiderwick Chronicles creator Holly Black, vampire noir author Laurell K. Hamilton and many other contributors – is being released this March to help independent music artist S.J. Tucker, a popular figure in the postmodern fantasy scene.

Tucker – who, like her idol Ani DiFranco, favors a self-produced career – was struck with a serious and expensive combination of medical problems in December, 2008. Like an estimated third of Americans today, Tucker could not afford health care coverage, and found herself facing tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills. Fortunately, Tucker has friends and fans in high places. Called together by GAMA award-winning author and game designer Phil Brucato (Mage: The Ascension) – an instructor at the Art Institute of Seattle – over two dozen writers and artists contributed their work to help defray those expenses. The resulting book, RAVENS IN THE LIBRARY, has been named for one of Tucker's songs.

Self-published by Brucato and his partner Sandra Buskirk (to whom Brucato was introduced by Tucker), the collection has been produced entirely by grass-roots "new media" methods. Through a combination of Internet marketing, social networking sites, virtual technology commerce and print-on-demand techniques, the book was put together in roughly six weeks, and has pre-sold nearly a thousand copies to date.
It will not be distributed through stores, and can be ordered online, for a limited time only, through: http://www.sjtucker.com/ravens.html.

In addition to New York Times best-sellers like Gaiman, Black and Hamilton, contributors to RAVENS IN THE LIBRARY include American Library Association award-winner Charles de Lint (The Blue Girl), pop-cultural folklore professor Ari Berk (Runes of Elfland), The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror series editor Terri Windling, and Hot Topic fairy artist Amy Brown. The book features 28 illustrated stories; some are reprinted, others are new. RAVENS also boasts original covers by author-artist James A. Owen (Here, There be Dragons). Each contributor donated his or her work free of charge. In several cases, this was because those people had been in similar situations themselves.

As of 2007, an estimated 46,000,000 Americans under the age of 65 lacked health care coverage. That number has grown to unknown proportions in recent months. Over 10.7% of American children, under current estimates, are not covered, and nearly 40% of the uninsured population resides in households that earn $50,000 a year or more. Despite the "fantastic" solution to Tucker's problem, this issue remains a significant concern in the United States. RAVENS IN THE LIBRARY is an imaginative approach to the problem of health care in America. Few people, however, share S.J. Tucker's popularity, and so this book is only a small step toward a larger solution.

Despite having an excellent seat, I discovered that apparently my non-digital camera looses it's ability to steady itself without a flash (I'll have to actually read the instruction manual to be sure *loathe*), but I thought I'd try turning a disappointment into amusement by posting these anyway. At least the author can now see what he might look like as a ghost himself!

What did you guys think about Coraline?

(I hadn't seen this and I wanted to see what other Neil Gaiman fans thought about the movie. I, for one, thought it was brilliant. The 3-D was very well-done, too. It added depth instead of making it over-the-top which was a nice change from other 3-D movies I'd seen.)
