NED Kelly has always held a fascination for Victorians. His story reads like part wild west cowboy adventure, part Dickensian crime novel.And the hunt for Kelly's final resting place is as intriguing a tale as any forensic pot-boiler.

"It's a great archaeological detective story that has taken two years to get to the bottom of," Heritage Victoria senior archaeologist Jeremy Smith said yesterday. "It's the most exciting archaeological find I've been involved in."

The push to find Kelly's grave first loomed large in 2005 when developers moved in to redevelop Pentridge Prison, which had been closed and sold off by the Kennett Government in 1997. Heritage Victoria launched a serious bid to find Kelly's grave and those of more than 30 others in 2006.

Slow progress was made until the stunning discovery this year of an undated Department of Justice document purported to show the locations of mass graves in a little-visited area of the prison complex. The 'eureka moment' came this week when archaeologists unearthed multiple graves. Three square, deep pits have been found.

"It's doubtful we will be able to identify all the individuals because of the diversity of conditions," Mr Smith said.

"The bones are not complete and they have been mixed, co-mingled and decomposed. Some go back to the 1860s. Until recently it was thought there was only one burial plot at the eastern end of D division building where Ronald Ryan was buried in 1967. Now we've confirmed the existence of an earlier historic burial ground at the eastern end of F division."

The remains of the 32 executed prisoners were transferred from Old Melbourne Gaol in 1929, but the exact locations of their burials were lost when old prison records were thrown out a decade later. The document was the only evidence of the re-burials at Pentridge.

And what about all the people who claim to "own" Ned's skull (there are around 4 people who claim this!)?

Hi everybody,

after playing with the thought of joining this community for quite some time I finally did it; so Hi!^^

Actually I'm not that new to the Ned Kelly 'fandom', it sort of started in 2000 (or 2001) when I read Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang. A brilliant book, if you haven't read it so far and have a little spare time I can only recommend it.

Well, that's how I got interested in Ned Kelly and started with a little research (which was good as I had to write a short 'work' on any topic that was somehow related to the English language at school. I decided to write about Ned Kelly). The best book I came across so far was Molony's Ned Kelly that gived you a detailled accounter of the happenings. Besides it is nicely written as far as a non native speaker like ma can judge. You probably already know the book.

Anyway, before I start boring you I better stop. Hello once again and cu around.

Has anyone else been there? I found it terribly depressing.
The tour guides were great though, we had a nice chat after I introduced myself as the biggest Ned Kelly enthusiast they'd ever meet :D

One of them told me how he was giving a talk to some teenage girls, and he mentioned how Heath Ledger visited when he was going to play Ned. So the girls were like OMG SQUEE and took photos of their feet on the ground outside the gaol because Heath had been there :/

Greetings All!

Yup you might find this a bit hard to beileve but a brit who likes everything to do with Ned Kelly!

Well it all goes back to a few years ago when I went to see my sister (who lives in Port Melbourne) and the film was just going to be released so their were exhibitions everywhere about Ned. So I decided to go on a night tour of the old gaol at Melbourne (with my Mother) and saw the actual cell Ned was in and also where he got hanged. I actually bought a Ned statue there and its next to my computer now :o)

So I then decided to go and see the film and yup I very much liked it, us Brits were not in it much but I could clearly see our influence in many parts of the film. Sadly the film didnt do that well here in UK (which Im not really that surprised) but its one of my favourites anyway.

Forward in time to this year when my parents went to see my sister again, and they actually visited the inn where the siege happened (all touristy now) and I got very jealous. They did get me some pressies though including a nail from the rail track (which had the wrong dates on it would you beileve it) and a couple of other small things. I'm now hoping to go there myself when I visit Sis next but dont know when.

Anyway be nice to keep in contact with you guys and please add me to your friends list if you wish.

There is one thing about that film that confuses me. When the policeman was at their house and they sort of beat him up and Ned wasn't there, surely later when the police man said he shot him the lady could have come forward and said that they were looking for her riding jacket? why would they have to say what they actually did?

I'm so glad I found this community! I saw Ned Kelly for the first time about half a year a go and i fell in love with it. It's such a beautifully sad film, and I bought the DVD about two months ago, and have watched it three times. I haven't yet found anyone of my friends who like it yet, i've made a couple watch it, but no-one really got into it i think. It's one of my favourite films.

Don't know if anyone's around this community anymore, but I just had to post... Just saw Ned Kelly for the first time lastnight and - OMG. It was the most depressing movie I've ever seen in my life. I mean, really beautifully done, very intense, extremely powerful story and kudos to everyone involved. But, omg, I wanted to kill myself by the time the movie was over.

Looking for icons from it too, other than f_paint's post here, which I already took from (and will credit, but LJ wouldn't let me comment on the entry). I don't know when I'll be able to use the icons, as I don't know when I'll get over feeling sick to my stomach when I see images from the movie... but it was such a powerful story. So if anyone can point me to any other NK icons, it'd be appreciated.

Am I the only one who, while watching this movie, thought I'd never be happy again?

I've wanted to see this movie since I first heard about it a year and a half ago, but finally got to watch it today! Gosh, this film simply blew me out of the water! I can't describe it, it was just perfect.

My favorite scene would have to be the Kelly Gang's first robbery, haha! They had no clue what they were doing, and instead of intimidating their hostages they were chitchatting! Not to mention Joe with the skull, "Hello!" hahahaha!! =)

Expect icons soon =)!

Hey guys :) My advertising at my yahoo Heath Ledger fan club brought a new member here :) It's my friend Jill. We've known each other since like...5th grade lol. Hey guys :)

Just joined as soon as I found Ande's post on my friend's page. I've been hoping for a community like this for a long time :) For other members that join that don't know me, my name is Lara, and I'm living in Melbourne, Australia. My boyfriend Lewi got me interested in Ned Kelly and he showed me the movie. I loved it! I dunno if it showed in the US yet. My friend Leah from there probably would have said, but that might just be because she lives in Montana and not everything shows there ;) I was glad that I was able to see it once I moved here. Now I'm off to post the link to this community in my Yahoo Heath Ledger fan club :D
