I just came back from a short visit in New Orleans. While I didn't get a chance to visit any of there local cemeteries while I was on a swamp tour our boat went past this place. I haven't a clue what the place is called, I'm not sure if our guide mentioned it or not. He did tell us that the large mound in the center is actually an Indian burial mound about two thousand years old.

Consecrated in 1898, Toronto's Mount Hope Catholic Cemetery is the final resting place of more than 76,000 men, women, and children.

Awed by the profusion of elaborately carved markers, I tried my best-- despite the blazing afternoon sun-- to capture a few on film. Most of these pictures were snapped blindly, as the glare on my crap camera was *most* unholy (Guess that's what I get for being a baptised Lutheran in this place!)

It was raining today and we couldn't go to the flea market...so what better time to visit a cemetery? These are pictures of headstones I liked from Madronia Cemetery in Saratoga, California. The oldest grave is from 1852 and people are still being buried here.

Aug. 27th, 2007 @ 05:39 pm Holy Rude Cemetery, Stirling - The Star Pyramid
Current Mood: content

Final set from the Holy Rude Cemetery in Stirling. I have been putting off posting this one for a while since I did really want to find the biblical quotes referenced on the sides of the pyramid. The problem with that being that I do not own a Bible (anyone know of a good online one?) and roman numerals confuse the bejeezus out of me. Seriously. Chick with discaluculus here. Numbers are not my friend.

So, I am posting now in the hope that some rather smart and Bible savvy people around here may know better than I do. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

The Star Pyramid is a monument to everyone who has died because of their faith i.e. refusing to convert and so being excecuted.

EDIT: A bit of colour for you here, can't think why I didn't already include this. The valley next to this monument was site a a lot of witch burnings. There is still a very active pagan community within the city of Stirling.
There is a story that a local eccentric is interred within the Pyramid, seated at a feasting table. Also, a Bible and Confession of Faith are supposedly sealed in an inner chamber.
Finally, can't seem to find a date of completion, but it was apparantly nearing completion in April 1863.

Best shot I could get of the whole thing.

Aug. 13th, 2007 @ 09:31 pm Sarah Ann Harrison, Laurel Hill Cemetery, Phila., PA
Sarah Ann died in May of 1850. Her husband, George L. Harrison, was a successful merchant. They were living in the vicinity of Spruce Street at the time of her death, with their three children and three Irish domestics. One of their immediate neighbors was Philadelphia common pleas court judge James Campbell who would later become PA State Attorney General and then U.S. Postmaster General from 1853-57. They weren't living in the cheap seats, and Sarah's monument definitely reflects that. Here she is, overlooking the Schuylkill River in Old Laurel Hill.

I tried out the Nikon D80 the other day at Laurel Hill. This was the second time I've used it for more than a couple practice photos, and I have yet to use the macro lens. Here are some of the cleaner shots.

Current Mood: cheerful

Another batch of photos from my recent visit to the Holy Rude Cemetery in Stirling. In the newer part of the graveyard I noticed that there were a lot of metal markers on the graves. There are no names on them, I guess they were once painted rather than being stamped or anything. I haven't seen any markers like this in other graveyards I have been into. They seem to have been very popular at one point in this one. X - posted to [info]mourning_souls

I was out taking pictures in the Holy Rude Cemetary beside Stirling Castle (Scotland) recently. I will be making a couple of posts regarding a few of the more unusual monuments there. First, here are some pictures of the more normal gravestones (Warning: lots of pictures) -
