I think I'm at about the halfway mark of part three, or maybe a little beyond it. Ideally, I'd like to finish it this weekend, but I suspect that's not a particularly realistic goal.

Aug. 29th, 2008 @ 12:51 pm how do you counter the appeal of a popular younger black opponent?
With a younger woman as your running mate, of course! Politics is so absurd, truly. I hate that it is an obvious maneuver to sway people based on surface impressions and not the issues. But that's pretty much what a lot of politics boils down to in this country (on BOTH sides, no question about that). Huckabee's comments suggesting all those disenfranchised Hillary voters of the female persuasion can now flock to McCain because he supports women is insultingly stupid.

Not impressed with what I've read so far on her but I'll give her this much - she has great eye wear ;-P! I am definitely curious to see how this all plays out.

Aug. 29th, 2008 @ 12:30 pm Shirley Curley
Yes...that's actually her name.
This is the President of Hudson Home Healthcare. She employs a bunch of her own family members and has a huge nepotism thing going on...and most recently she has fired my husband without warning.

We made the decision to move out of Central Massachusetts based on the fact that his job was not paying enough for us to make ends meet. So I had to go back to work full time and it just happened that I was offered a job in the eastern Massachusetts area. My husband went to his branch managers to bring this up to them (before I started my job) to see what they could work out as far as a transfer or simply changing his schedule a bit to fit this new situation.

His bosses took almost 3 weeks to get a meeting with the heads of the company to discuss this. The day after they had a meeting, my husband was fired based on their position that he "moved out of his sales territory." He is still technically within his sales territory as he HAS commuted to eastern Massachusetts on several occassions to sell accessibility equipment for this company. Nor is there anything in his contract that says that he has to live anywhere specifically. So this was a completely wrongful termination situation.

I called Shirley Curley yesterday to find out what she was thinking in doing this to my family. I left her a voicemail message requesting for her to call me back. She didn't. Instead, I am not "allowed" on the premises to pick up my husband today after they take away his work vehicle because they don't want me to "make a scene." WTF. This woman is such a fucking primadonna it's not even funny. And no...she hasn't called me back.

If you all know of anyone who needs something...like a stairlift, ramp, wheelchair, or any other home healthcare equipment, I URGE you to stay clear of Hudson Home Healthcare. There are many other better companies to get such things through who treat their employees with care. Hudson HHC is not one of these companies.

Maybe Shirley Curley will fall off of her yaucht this weekend and get eaten by a shark. One can only dream...

And I have a mad fit of the giggles over that choice. I do not think it was a particularly wise choice.

Edited: I am also flabbergasted as to how a parent of a 4 month child could possibly campaign for vice-presidency. Now, this baby needs special care on top of it all, and there's four other children involved in the mix. Yeouch. Giggle fit is over.

So I watched Obama's speech last night. I hadn't really watched any of the convention except for a few minutes of Hilary's speach the other night. Obama is a good orator, I'll give him that. It was a very strong speech. I find it interesting that during elections the gloves come off. There was more than once that I thought, "Oh no he didn't." I think the Republicans are going to be much worse though.

I tuned in because it was a historical moment. The first black man to be nominated by a major party for president. I was impressed that he didn't refer to his race. I found it weird that he never mentioned Martin Luther King Jr by name and only referred to him as "the preacher."

I really look forward to November 5th when this can all be over with though.

So I'm doing the One Hundred Pushups Challenge (http://hundredpushups.com/), not because I think I'll be able to do one hundred good-form pushups at the end of six weeks, but because I want to actually work up to being able to do good pushups rather than heavily modified ones. I'm currently doing them super modified and feeling like a total wuss because even with modifications, I'm still several inches from the ground when I go as low as I can.

Just now, my husband decided to see if he could still do good-form pushups, and did a couple.

"That's not right," I said. "You're not going all the way to the ground."

"You're not supposed to go all the way to the ground. That's cheating."

"It says right on the web page that a good-form pushup has you lowering yourself to the ground."

"Tell that to my drill sergeants. You're only supposed to go down far enough that your arms are bent at a right angle. Going all the way to the floor means you're taking a moment to rest, and they'd chew you out for that."

So, who to believe, a web site, or the drill sergeants who terrorized my husband back in the 1980s? I have to say, believing the drill sergeants is very tempting, because that means my pushups aren't as crappy as I'd feared.

Aug. 29th, 2008 @ 12:32 am On my way to work
This is what I've seen as I get off the highway each morning this week, right at the bottom of the exit ramp:

If you can't read it, the bottom says "Brought to you by God, the Father"

I have to say I'm somewhat offended.

I found this article about the billboard: http://www.philly.com/philly/business/20080807_In_the_beginning_______was_the_billboard_on_I-95.html

Basically, it's in response to an athiest group's billboard ("Don't believe in God? You're not alone.") that was in the same location right before this one. I remember seeing that when I was on my way to work in June. The first one had a website and the sponsoring organization's name. I understand that people were offended by promoting atheism but I'm still offended by the response. They could have done something a little less, well, religious, I suppose. A friend asked me what I'm going to do about the billboard, but I really don't think I shall do anything. There's a fine line between free speech and free speech only for those you support.

No, that isn't quite right....Free speech can not be merely free speech of those whom you support. That's closer, and I think you get the point.

Aug. 28th, 2008 @ 08:14 pm Checking it out - Everyday Minerals
I just got my sample package of Everyday Minerals make-up. I ordered a sample pack of foundation - you get 3 foundations, 1 blush and 1 finishing powder/concealer, your choice of colors - for free. I also ordered a 10 pack of mini-eyeshadows for $17. You get 1 full gram of product of each item. They come in these adorable little containers, about 1" in diameter and 1/2" high, with a sifter in the top of the container after you take the lid off. I also ordered a Kabuki brush and a package of "eye buds" - cotton swabs with one pointy end and one round flattened end.

I immediately washed off today's makeup and tried this stuff out. I think I don't understand how to use the foundation so well yet. I LOVE the Kabuki brush. I don't normally use foundation, and I think it's going to take a bit getting used to. One of the foundation colors is too light, but it's not a total waste, because you can mix them to create your own custom colors - and it was free, so I can't complain! I really like the Fair Neutral and the Soft Butter Peach. I also really like the blush choice I made - Plum Dust.

I then tried out the eyeshadows. I tried a color called Morocco first. LOVE IT! I used the Mary Kay brushes my mom gave me from her Mary Kay consultant days. They're still in pristine condition because they've been used so infrequently, even though they're from when I was about 8 years old. The eyeshadow fluffed on beautifully with minimal powdery-excess falling on the sidelines. The color went on bold, which is what I like. You only need to use a tiny bit. I can tell these 1 gram samples will probably last longer than the 2.2 gram powder cakes of Maybelline, Covergirl, Revlon and Loreal I have always gotten.

I fluffed a color called Samba Lesson into the crease with an angled brush (thanx Mom!) and I look like I need to go out to an expensive dinner and dancing. So, no crease shadow for work tomorrow. I then used a dampened eyeliner brush in a color called Smokey for lining over and under the lid. That went nicely. I got a deep line that is not too dark or too thick. I'm sure the more I do this, the more adept I'll get at using the brushes and powders.

I finished off with a highlighter color on the brow bone called Baby Bath. Loverly!

I'm very pleased with the feel of this make-up. it doesn't feel heavy or cakey. It doesn't have the "glow" that I've heard Bare Escentuals/Bare Minerals has, because it doesn't have the controversial ingredient Bismuth Oxychloride, which I've heard can cause itching and irritation with continual use. But I don't necessarily need my face to glow. My personality glows enough ;) If I'm too sparkly, it could be overwhelming.

I then used the velvety soft mascara I got from Clinique' a week or so ago and I look like I am ready to go out. I'm going to wear this stuff to bed and see how well it holds up for extended wear. They say it's so gentle on your skin you can wear it to bed. If I don't wash my regular make-up off before I go to bed, I normally wake up with sticky, itchy eyes. So, this is an experiment.

The problem with "regular" make-up is that it all contains talc. My friend who is a marine biologist and has worked for Estee' Lauder and another make-up color lab told me that talc is a serious irritant and that only mineral make-up doesn't have it. So, after reading all of the information from [info]tribaldancer on her experimentation with Bare Escentuals, Aromaleigh and Everyday Minerals make-up, I decided to give it a try.

I'm really happy with the amount of these samples. There's plenty there, as I use make-up so seldom. Though I'll be using it more often working at the gym 4 days a week. I don't necessarily have sensitive face skin, but my eyes get irritated so easily from eyeshadow that has been used a couple of times, as the oils from my skin get on the applicator, the surface of the make-up and it's all just downhill from there. Even the $14 Clinique' eyeshadow got an oily slick on it the FIRST time I used it, even though I washed my face immediately before trying it - bummer. So, no more of any of that stuff for me.

Well, I'll report more about the mineral make-up, and I'm leaving this post unfiltered, in case anyone out there searches on Mineral Make-up and wants other's experiences. Now I'm going to go search for tips on how to properly apply the foundation and what it's supposed to come out like.

I also want to add that I think Eye Candy would do well to add sifters to their little containers of the glitter powder that they sell. That way the stuff wouldn't spill all over the place every time you open it.

I don't know how well these little containers are going to travel yet. I'm afraid if the containers are tipped over that too much of the product will spill out through the sifter holes into the cap area. We'll see the first time I travel with them. Now I have to get a new make-up case to hold all 15 little containers I got, or get rid of all of my old make-up, which would hurt my feelings... I think I need multiple cases for the different colors and categories of make-up. Browns, Purples, and Foundations/Blush.

Aug. 28th, 2008 @ 09:55 am Urgent Action Needed.
From http://alostrael.livejournal.com/357444.html:

I'm really tired of making this post.

For all y'all who thought, "Well, I'll do something when it becomes official," it has become official, and it is time to get off your fucking ass:

The Bush administration officially proposes conscience rule for doctors who don't want to do their fucking jobs.

This does not just apply to doctors -- surgeons, anesthesiologists, etc. -- but to anyone involved. Nurses, equipment wranglers, the dude who monitors the machine that goes "bing!", anyone. Anyone could walk away at any time from a woman who is simply trying to live her life the way she thinks most wise.

Clinics that receive government funds would have to abide by this rule, and could not fire someone for not doing their job, even if they are the only person in a hundred miles who could do it. Even if it is the only abortion-providing facility in the state.

There are no provisions for assisting women who have been denied -- none. No statement that a doctor must help the woman find another doctor who will help her. No offers to help with transportation, should a woman need to go to a different city to get help. Nothing. We get nothing. We are their patients and we are not only being put behind our employees' consciences, we are being left with nothing as recourse.

"Nothing in the new regulation in any way changes a patient's right to any legal procedure," [Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt] said, noting that a patient could go to another provider.

No, you fucking idiot, it doesn't change my right to do it, but it is going to mean that thousands upon thousands of women are not going to be able to do it.

You don't have to make a thing illegal to make it impossible to fucking get, and that is the effect this is going to have. That should scare the shit out of every single one of you who values their ability to do as they wish with their bodies.

This is the rule. Not the draft, the actual rule that will go into effect if we do not act to stop it and act now.

The rule goes into effect in 30 days.

We have one month to stop this.

Do something.

Planned Parenthood is fighting this as hard as they can. Make a donation here.

Write to your legislator, telling them you oppose the rule, and asking them to fight it.
