29th-Aug-2008 06:39 pm - Pros fanon/canon guesses!
So I was having a conversation with [info]lysimache, who was impressing me with her recall of the name of Jim's girlfriend-who-looks-like-Blair. (Cassie, if you've forgotten. There's an awesome Media Cannibals vid about how she looks like Blair.)

Jen: I did watch the show, you know.
Me: I know.
Jen: How do you know?
Me: Because, if I asked you what you liked about it, you're not gonna say "The first thing that appeals to me is that Jim and Blair are equals, because Blair's a Guide. I love how domestic the show is, like how they always argue about running out of hot water. It doesn't hurt that Blair has so much ethereal beauty, either."
Jen: Hmph.

So in that spirit, not yet having seen The Professionals, I present...

Canon/Fanon Pros guesses

My guesses )
Jen's guesses )

Also, on the list of "things I am not going to write even after I have seen the show" are all the crazy crossovers [info]lysimache is dreaming up for me. She says she wants Doyle/Brian from Velvet Goldmine (or maybe Curt; I don't think it matters to her as long as it isn't Arthur), though doing timeline comparison, Doyle's crazy art school days are too far in the past for this to work, 'cause the Death of Glitter is '74.

She says she also wants Doyle/Kowalski, which does work -- baby!RayK is just about legal during Pros, maybe even a bit older. Plus, RayK would be trying so hard to be cool and it would be awesome. I think she just wants a pairing where they're both called Ray, because she also kept trying to talk me into RayK with Rey Curtis from Law & Order. I have pointed out that you can get Ray/Ray without even leaving Due South, but I don't think she wants to slash Vecchio.

Also, I am totally not writing a story where Cowley mistakenly thinks Bodie and Doyle are together, and decides (because he wuvs them and wants them to be happy) that the best way to avert blackmail is to be open about it, and throws them a wedding, and everyone is totally supportive and they end up getting together anyway. Because it's probably been done in a fandom this old.

Not that I've ever actually managed to finish a story ever in any fandom, so when I say I'm not writing, I really mean it.

Right. Now I'm gonna go see if the Pros DVDs actually work.

Can I just go into hiding until after the election is over?

PLEASE?!

Soooo yeah, I didn't want to wake up as early as I did, but I finally got my period, and my cramps were making it impossible to stay asleep. Then Laura got up, so I just kinda got up, too. And I've been messing around all morning. I attempted to help Jenny P move her furniture, but the layout is still not optimal, and Brittany had to go to training, so she wasn't around for input. Webster rooms are kind of screwy.

Anyway, I didn't really go into a lot of detail about moving in. But I suppose the only highlight is that Rec Board was having these scavenger hunts, and I had to take like three camera phone pictures of people in front of Webster for them. lol And as I was driving away with my parents, I saw Jess's Old Man taking one. D. Peck was in one of the groups. Losers! XD

That and my dad making fun of Johnny for being a little bratfag. Yeah. I made that word up, and it's what he is. LOL He was helping Laura's dad bring our refrigerator in, and he was being a little dick and acting like he knew everything. XD Jess and I just made fun of him behind his back. What a little bratfag.

Last night, we also got a visit from Mike, and we got to meet his new boyfriend, Matty. Matty was kind of awesome and was showing me Smash Brothers videos on YouTube. XD Mike also introduced me to Abney Park's music, but Limewire doesn't work well here, so I had problems downloading any songs. But I'll try again later.

On today's agenda, we have...probably Cafe Diem (since our meal plans aren't active yet, wtf), Montclarion meeting with Rosenweig, screwing around and going to the bookstore for an extension cord, and then going to the...little meeting thing where they tell the volunteers what we have to do tomorrow when the freshmen move in. That's why we're here early, after all. And then they don't give us food. =>_>= Or a shower that works.

After that, I don't know! We'll find something fun to do. Maybe I'll head over to the Rec Center and take a shower.
29th-Aug-2008 02:32 am - .Mov
So, I moved in today. It was actually surprisingly hassle-free, though I did forget a ton of stuff. It's not necessity type stuff, but it is stuff I'd like to have. But it's all good, because my mom is coming up on Monday, and I'll be going home sometime soon to get some Pills. Oh yeah.

So, the Webster room is pretty nice. Our set-up is wacky, and we have cords running across the floor, but it's not so bad. I'm top bunk again. Pictures at some point, maybe.

I'm having problems feeling any sort of way about anything lately. I realized it today while doing something I should have found enjoyable. Instead, I kind of just found it..bothersome, and I felt impatient to do something else, even though we didn't have anything planned. I don't know... My emotions are restless. Maybe I just need to get my period already. Or the apathy will wear off once I start doing things that matter.

DOHERTY: All I know is there's a girl giving a guy a b--- job in the first episode.
GARTH: When they told me that, I thought, Aaron Spelling is rolling over in his grave right now.

and
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Okay, but back to the fistfight: fact or fiction?
GARTH: I don't think we ever hit each other.
DOHERTY: We had our moments.
GARTH: I just remember being outside and the boys having to try to settle us down.
DOHERTY: No, we never punched each other.
GARTH: Scratching? I'm not going to deny that.

and
GARTH: All those people who wrote the ''I Hate Brenda'' newsletter are going to get mad at me now, like ''Why are you leaving your child with Brenda?''
DOHERTY: Hopefully those people have grown up.
GARTH: I doubt it.

28th-Aug-2008 02:41 pm - More dorkitude
Last weekend I was watching Unleashed, not for the first time, and I was thinking how it could be seen as commentary on the use of violence in popular entertainment.

... wha? Sweetie, put down the meta and walk away slowly.
28th-Aug-2008 10:44 pm - London! Camden! Festivals and that!
Hello. I did come back from London. I'm sorry. There was work, and things to do, and unpacking, and shopping, and television just went mad. I saw that Mutual Friends was going to be on. I saw that Alexander Armstrong was in it. I saw that Marc Warren was in it. I saw that they were friends who hugged and gave each other advice on the breakdown of their marriages. But then it was on, and I watched it, and it was great and rather super gay, and now I'm pretty much planning to watch the whole thing. And then after it, there were two adverts, one for a drama with Paddy Considine on Wednesday at 9, and one for a drama with Gina McKee, on Sunday at 9. It was a bit lkike TV was saying, "You remember 9 o'clock? You'll never see that again." Emmerdale this week opened with Carl King and his girlfriend having a pillow fight. I stumbled on an episode of Reaper, which was much better than the one I saw in Cornwall. Dear oh dear.

But I went to London. K and I talked about her and J a lot on Friday night. Then on Saturday we went to Camden to try to find her a 40s style dress. Oh my good god, Camden. I thought I had been before because I had it mixed up with Covent Garden. I was mistaken. Camden is amazing. So many beautiful things on sale. We walked around at least five markets, and market halls. I don't wear skirts and dreses very often, and suddenly I was all "I want that dress. I want that skirt". Honestly. And the jewellery! And the candles. And in the middle there was a bar/restaurant that was Cuban-themed. K and I have planned to go back when we have some money. It was amazing.

Then we went to go see Avenue Q, which was great, and the next day we went to the 40s street party, except that her friend wanted us to go round to her house dressed in our costumes, and by the time we got to the other friend's - a lot of walking and a tube journey later - the party was pretty much over, and K's friend and K slowly starting changing out of their costumes, so I ended up getting changed. But we had a good time, I went out with K and her friends and we went to a local festival thing, and then to some clubs and bars, and I had a bit of a dance, and then we went back to her friend's flat and watched a bit of The Goonies before going to bed. And the next day we watched a whole bunch of Third Rock From the Sun as part of some marathon, and then I came home. Rah.

And now it's late and my hair's wet. Rah.
28th-Aug-2008 01:04 pm - When you call me that, smile
I suppose I consider westerns to be something of a guilty pleasure. Genre fiction fights for respectability with mainstream fiction, but westerns have to fight for respectability in genre fiction. People seem to be a lot more willing to judge westerns as a whole by their worst examples while being much more forgiving of the embarrassments to be found in fantasy, science fiction, or mystery/crime fiction. Heck, the "paranormal romance" genre gets better press these days, which just goes to show that success provides its own respectability.

It's a shame that Westerns don't get more respect, because at their best they contain incredibly powerful mythic storytelling. To be fair I find this much more in western movies than western novels, but that's probably as much an issue of what I've been exposed to more than anything else. When it comes to westerns I'm really more of a movie girl, though that expands a bit when you consider writers whose aren't really thought of as writing straight westerns, such as Joe R. Lansdale. Plus, I have issues with John Wayne.

If you've hung around here long enough you might remember that last year I was planning on doing something for Script Frenzy with a Woman With No Name character (started, didn't finish). That actually used a modern setting, but there's no doubting the theme's western roots (I also like revenge tragedies). Anyway, I've been thinking about giving NaNoWriMo another stab this year (I'm overdue; I tried it in 2003 and 2005 but failed to finish both times), and I'm seriously considering a western, preferably something that captures what I like about western movies. With two female protagonists, mind you. No use of The Person With No Name character this time. Expect further noodling on the subject, probably.

How do you feel about westerns? Oh, and have any of you read Preacher by Garth Ennis?
28th-Aug-2008 10:40 pm - US of A
I keep my promise. The flights are booked.

In November I will fly to the US to spend another "crazy time" with my soul mate Lor.
Last time I saw her was for my 28th birthday in July 2007, when she and her son flew in for a week.

Hon, I cannot wait to see you and experience Thanksgiving with you and J.
Maybe he can drive us around? *smiles*

See you on Nov 23! Love you lots!

And gawd bless my Matt for being so understanding and minding my cats :-)
Love you too, Stinkbär!
28th-Aug-2008 09:35 pm - Avatar, personal stuff + on the search for even more spies!
I just finished the first season and dang! A series like Avatar isn't supposed to make me cry! I loved the story with the moon spirit, but poor Sokka and Yue. Seeing Katara and Aang (and Zuko - yeah, I like him, too, and I don't give up hope yet that he will see the light one day) in action was great, though. And I loved the city of the Northern Water Tribe. Such a good series! I look forward to watch the second season next.

In other news:

work, solving problems, the world and I )

* I settled down for watching the documentation yesterday and it put me right away in the mood for more spies (not that I'm not always in the mood for that, but it strengthened it even more). So, does one of you have recommendations for documentations on the topic? Or maybe just a favorite spy movie/book/series that you think I just have to watch/read?

More comment answers and maybe even mails tomorrow or during the weekend, when I caught up on some sleep (hah!).
28th-Aug-2008 10:18 pm - Now what.

I think...sometime during the eight months of post a's life, i forgot how to be a student. Or for some reason or other, my IQ was reduced by half, when it wasn't even high to begin with, which obviously puts me in dire straits now.

I'm going to school, and I'm physically there, but I'm stagnant on this learning journey right now. Trying to move my feet forward, but they're not exactly budging.

Just when you think you might be settling into the pace of lectures, tutorial start and after today, I feel really really dumb. In stark contrast, everyone else appears really really bright. They're already energetically expressing their views and insights which I didn't think of, while I'm trying to push myself to just utter something regardless of its intelligence level (I didn't). Of course, having a discussion with a third yr and fourth year during class just reinforced this acute sense of incapability. Makes one wonder how one ended up in university.

27th-Aug-2008 11:58 pm - Meme (yoinked from [info]i_am_indy
This is a fun meme. Please play

Comment on this post. I will choose seven interests from your profile and you will explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so that others can play along.

Here's the ones [info]i_am_indy picked for me to explain...

indy car - speaks for itself. love indy car racing. quickly becoming my favorite motorsport because it's been way more exciting than NASCAR at the moment (even with scott dixon running away with the championship).

christopher walken - one of my favorite actors. even his bad stuff is good in a twisted sorta way. besides, i have a little crush on his younger self from when he was in the dead zone and the deer hunter.

dan wheldon - my favorite indy car driver! he's british and kinda sounds like the geico gecko. i picked him as my driver to root for after i started watching indy car religiously after the I500 in 2004. that was the last time my fave nascar driver, robby gordon, did the Indy-Charlotte double and Dan was one of his teammates. speed tv did a program about it and dan was on there making fun of robby's age and stuff. he was munching on a banana and it was just painfully adorable.

hairspray - the recent remake of the john waters movie of the same name. love the movie but esp. love the music.

motogp - my best friend in indiana got me into motogp when i was visiting her in march. casey stoner is absolutely flying, spoken in horrible british accents, is now an inside joke. i wish i was going to the USGP race this year. *pouts*

writing - i fancy myself a writer. i'm currently working on a ton of different projects. which, i think, is a way of putting off/procrastinating on finishing any of them. what i am working on at the moment is a romance novel set in the world of open wheel racing.

scarface - best movie ever and the only time i've ever been attracted to al pacino. that line he says to elvira in the club about looking like she hasn't been effed in a year? wo-ow! yeah, i'm weird.

27th-Aug-2008 04:49 pm - Ways in which I am a dork, #823
For Happyfest II at [info]bringthehappy there were 441 prompts. 441 is the square of one lucky prime times the square of another lucky prime. And in this case "lucky prime" not only refers to the specific mathematical term - they both happen to be numbers that are often considered to be lucky.

I have GOT to go back to school. Because I am NOT THIS SMART, I'm just BORED.

- I finished Twilight (and at some point I'll post a bitchy entry about it) and sarted with New Moon and right away thought: Charlie/Alice? It would be interesting, considering she looks like jailbait but is way older than he is. Which reminds me why the age difference between Edward/Bella and Angel/Buffy, Spike/Buffy was never as icky as it could be: None of the vampires act their actual age, they act their 'death' age. Which is actually pretty damn stupid. But I guess writing a vampire who's acting the right age would be pretty complicated and would make vampire/human relationships almost impossible. Humans would just be too idiotic for them. Well, assuming that the vampires actually kind of mature and grow. Also, the Twilight fandom is wanking again, which can only mean on thing: There's a HP wank to follow. Wheeee!
