Credit Cards are a Pain at Conventions [Jul. 14th, 2009|12:57 pm]

[mood | hmmm]

Disclaimer: this is not an advert, more of an idea I'd like to get some opinions on.

I think we can all agree that the current trend is away from cash towards credit cards, which is very unfortunate for us trying to sell merch at conventions (well, it's been extremely unfortunate for me, I can't speak for everyone). I've seen a number of neat little setups for trying to still process cards, though they all seem to be somewhat lacking, and almost always take a bit of explaining to customers that we're risking losing.

There's a device called the SmartSwipe that I've been eying lately that has finally left the Canada-only status. It advertises itself as an extra-secure way to make payments for personal online shopping, but from examining the FAQ it looks like it could be a great way for us to provide a safe, intuitive way for card-toting customers to pay for goods they would be otherwise unable to purchase. The features I'm speficially looking at are:

Multiple people swiping: yes
Work in existing online store: yes
Portable: yes, very
Requirements: Windows XP or higher and Internubs
Fee: no
Out-of-country functionality: yes

So, to wrap that into a sentence: we could sit down at our tables, log a netbook into the wireless and go to our existing online stores, and then let customers swipe their cards on the spot without a worry in the world: shipping and handling would be done right there on the spot. :) In my experience, a increasingly higher percentage of cons have wireless and power readily available for me, and making any adjustments to my store to support what I just described would be relatively trivial.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Has anyone had any experience with such a setup? I haven't invested the $87 into such a setup yet, and was wondering what the NCWCCC thought before I do so.

NCWCCC - Anthology Three (PLEASE READ) [Apr. 21st, 2009|01:02 pm]

jamiecotc

As some of you know, we are doing a third NCWCCC anthology.  If you didn’t know, well, now you do.  As with the previous two anthologies, we will be working with a theme. This year’s theme is religion. You may interpret this theme in any way you wish. However, please keep content and language within a PG rating. We will accept comics, art, photography, short stories, essays, poetry or a mix of all of the above. While we prefer new art, you may submit something you have already done, but it cannot be from either of the previous NCWCCC anthologies. It won’t fit the theme. ;)

IMPORTANT: This year, all entries will be selected by a juried panel for inclusion in the anthology. This means that you could spend a great deal of work on a project that may not make it into the book. Please think about this before jumping in. We are doing this both to lend a bit more credibility to the anthology and so that we don’t wind up w/ a book w/ with over 400 pages.  The panel will be made up of people outside the Clatch.

Once we have enough participants, 20 or so, I will send out more details. If you would like to participate in this third anthology, please let me know on or before Saturday, May 15th.

And the info you have all been waiting for … Deadline for all work and biographies is Saturday, October 31st, 2009.

On the off chance that anyone here cares about website development, I had an article published in the inaugural issue of JsMag - the magazine for JavaScript developers. (Yes I am a little behind in my shameless self-promotion.) My article is about debugging without using alert(). It's available at http://www.jsmag.com/. I believe you can sign up for a free sample.

NCWCCC March Meeting Reminder [Mar. 19th, 2009|07:52 pm]

jamiecotc

The March Meeting of the NCWCCC will be at the May Memorial Library in Burlington, NC.  This is in conjunction w/ the official launch of our second anthology, Good Luck Sweet Cookie. The meeting will be Saturday, March 21st from 2:00 – 4:00 PM. Along w/ our regular meeting agenda we will also be discussing the anthology and talking about it w/ anyone who shows up for the launch. Directions to the Library are below.

Unfortunately, there is a bit of bad news. We will NOT be allowed to sell any merchandise at this event.  This includes the anthology. (If you’d like to bring promotional stuff to give away, please do.) I’m sorry about this, but there was some miscommunication about Library policy.  Apparently the library deals w/ only one distributor for these kinds of events and that does not include Lulu.  The “Local Author Fair” event, from September of ‘08, was an exception to this rule. If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Directions

1-40/85 take ext 145 to Highway 49 which will become Maple Ave.
Go approx. 2.16 miles until you are in downtown Burlington.
Take a right onto Spring St
Cross Davis St.
May Memorial Library will be on left between Davis St and Front St.
Also included is a map to the event.

Woody After Hours [Mar. 9th, 2009|01:36 pm]

jamiecotc
Ben Carter's webcomic, Woody After Hours, launched this week.

Woody After Hours is a webcomic about a late night talk show in Raleigh, NC. Contrary to what you may have thought, the title is not meant to imply that the comic is, or is about, porn. Sorry.

WAH is written by Ben Carter and illustrated by Paul Westover. It is updated on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Ben has been attending Clatch meetings for well over a year.  I can only assume we have infected him and he is now part of the whole.  One of us! One of us! One of us!

Congrats, Ben!

Update! [Feb. 4th, 2009|10:09 am]

ashwings
[mood | hopeful]

Hey guys! Wanted to thank everyone once again for pointing us in the direction of convention listings and that all around good advice :) To give you an update on whats going on with the whole thing I am back in Kanukistan where its -25.7°F, where the snow is up to your chest. Greg and I are compiling the agenda for all the conventions that sparked our interest, and lets not forget the NCWCCC meetings! So we should be good for that, this will actually now give me that kick in the butt to go to these conventions and get over "THE SHY" and have some fun. There is still some paperwork to file, and I have to be interviewed and get my okay to go across at the boarder, and there SHOULDN'T be any problems, so things are looking good. I should probably be back in the warm weather in March!

Again, thanks for all your help everyone!
