    NNursing Debrief
Hello to all our fabulous NNurses! I am so proud of all the work we did at Arisia this year. I would like to cross post this in my personal journal. Please let me know if anyone has issue with the vid links, or anything else here, being shared.

Our numbers, both in donors and in volunteers were outstanding. Even with Sunday's snow storm, we got enough donors to ensure another two day drive next year. We also had several new NNurses this year and I hope all were made to feel welcome. In particular, we had two male NNurses this year and I feel confident that both will be returning to do it again.

Thank you to all who helped out in either or both skits. We're always grateful to Rocky for sharing their stage time, and this was our first year working with the Masquerade staff to do a second skit. They were helpful, accommodating and professional, especially given the last minute nature of things. (The idea of doing a second skit didn't occur to me until a week before con and most of the arrangements were made at the convention, the night before.)

    For those who missed out on the skits (or maybe you were there but want to relive the glory) here's footage of both;

    Friday night Rocky Pre-Show skit
Special thanks to [info]big_jewfro, his roommates and [info]gilana for their awesome work in getting the song pre-recorded.

    Saturday night pre-Masquerade skit
Special thanks to [info]trowa_barton for not only making this skit possible by his presence, but for making it truly rock with his stage talent.

I know the Bone Marrow drive people were happy working with us. they did so well on the first day, they spontaneously came back for a second day. Which was good, because I promoted them Saturday night too, forgetting that they hadn't intended to be there Sunday. I also failed to get all the correct facts, so there's room for improvement, at least on my part.

The photo shoot went really well. (Kudos and thanks to [info]doeeyedbunny for finding us the space!) Sadly not all the NNurse were able to join us at the shoot. However, a good time was had by those that did and I don't think we'll have any trouble filling the pages for next year's calendar.

Speaking of next year, my mind is already racing ahead ...but I'll save that for another post. Before I sign off, I want to also thank [info]first_clark, [info]gingerkat, and [info]dda for all they do to make this drive possible to begin with, thank you!

    Thank you's from MGH & Chlidren's
    MGH:

    THANK YOU!

    Good Morning John,

Wow! What a wonderful way to start my week. I walked into my office this morning and saw the fantastic results from the Saturday blood drive!

73 people came to the bus to donate, 10 were deferred, 63 people donated blood. What was great also, was that 38 of those people were donating for the first time. It is always wonderful to see new people giving blood and hopefully making it a lifelong habit.

You have all truly "Paid It Forward". Over 200 patients have been give another chance at life because of your selfless actions. Those patients also have parents, children and friends that are touched by your generosity.

Thank you all so very much for giving of your self to help another. I look forward to Readercon in July!*

    Children's Hospital:

    Hi John,

Yes you did all you said, and more, we could not have asked for better support. I thought the group of people donating were lots of fun, and seems to have a lot of fun at this convention.

John I am very pleased to have 65 present at a new or existing drive. We would love to plan on coming back next year and look forward to it.** I am glad you are pleased with the turn out and you should be, to have collected over 100 good blood donations in two days is wonderful. I would say both hospitals benefited from having worked with you.

Thank you for all your help.

    * Yes, Readercon 20 is hosting a drive for the first time. See you there?

** So, is everyone on board to do this again? Just the same, or suggestions for change?

    Thank you!
Last I checked, the weekend total of potential donors we signed up over at the CRIR table was 90. I know that the success of this drive was due as much to how you all promoted and supported us alongside your own efforts, including in the skits and during the Masquerade hold.

Looking forward to working with you all again.

    Another Naughty Nurse success
We had a total of 138 appointments this weekend between MGH and Children's hospital. We had a total of 103 successful donations. A total success!

You all did a fantastic job recruiting donors, posing for the calendar, and performing skits! And of course all the while looking fabulously naughty.

A special thanks to Bey for managing the skits and to everyone who worked extra time at the table. And of course to John, who works his tail off every year making the drive a success.

    Excellent Job!

    photo shoot update
I will need everyone to be present at 1pm Saturday to ensure we get our group photograph done first. This way we won't miss anyone if the second half of the shoot runs late. Please meet me at our table right at 1 and I'll take everyone up to the photographer. From 1-2pm we'll get our group photo, plus a few people that are not available at 3pm. We will probably do the majority of the photos at 3pm when we aren't as rushed. Please let me know if you need the earlier time so we ensure we get you out on time. Thanks!

    checking the list twice
    We're almost there!
When you arrive at the con, everyone can receive their ribbons from the blood drive table. Badges of people I know to be registered will be located at this table as well, instead of registration.

People I have listed as already registered include:
    mizarchivist
    doeeyedbunny
    gilana
    pisicutsa
    buxon_bey
    hnybny
    big_jewfro
    miss_demeanor71
    omly

I want to ensure that everyone not listed above (excluding cancellations) is registered for Arisia. I will let you know where your name badge will be located so you know where to go when you arrive. Hopefully I can get your badges over to our table as well so you can avoid registration. Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Challenge and opportunity?
Note to self: Avoid the elevators this weekend! Follow up thought: Hmm, captive audiences in lines on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors! Recruiting opportunity! Additional thought: Stair climbers are self selecting as being in good condition! Recruiting opportunity! Thought to break the cycle: With 130 appointments still to fill, EVERYTHING is going to look like a recruiting opportunity fro the next two days....

    Photo Shoot
Our photo shoot will take place on Saturday at 1:00 and 3:00pm. We had to split the time due to lack of space. We might find an alternate spot so we don't have to space it out, but I don't want to count on it. I know there was a make-up issue, and one person had something scheduled for 3pm. These people can be photographed at 1:00 plus a few others, and the rest at 3pm. You can meet me at the table at these times and I'll bring you up to where the photographer is. See you all very soon!

    Ribbons and comps
I know a roll call went out a while back for names for badges. Was that tied in with comps? I know at least two NNurses who are new volunteers this year who are unsure if they're getting comped. For one it will affect how much of the con she attends. Who would have this answer?

Also, I thought event ribbons were being given out at the Heinlein table, but the person I spoke with at Registration says they have a pre-printed list of NNurses and they will get a ribbon when they check in at Reg. This means if we don't have your name, they don't have your name and you don't get no ribbon. This was an "I happened to ask a friend who's on Reg" situation. Do we actually have a liason handling this?

    "How to" for Naughty Nursing
A friend of mine recently asked about the schedule for N-Nursing at Arisia. I realized my answer, in addition to being really long, might be really helpful. So here it is.

Being an Arisia Nurse is about the most flexible volunteer opp at the con. At some point on Friday you should check in at the Heinlein Society table in the lobby. [info]first_clark, our rep, will most likely be there. If you're willing to work a shift at the table or work the lobby with a clipboard to sign people up, you should talk to him about that.

The major job of a Naughty Nurse is visual. People see you in your costume around the con and it keeps a good idea at the fore front of their mind. You can dress up as a Naughty Nurse for a few hours, or for the whole con. For as long as you are dressed up, people will view you as a representative of the blood drive. As such, you need to be willing to answer questions should people stop you. When you check in you'll be given enough info to handle most FAQs. Anything you can't answer, direct them to stop by the table.

Some people might want to have their picture taken with you. Do or don't do this as fits your own comfort level. There are plenty of us who are okay with pictures, so it doesn't have to be you. If you don't want to be in someone's picture, again, you can direct them to the table in the lobby. Plenty of us stop by and/or hang around, they can find a camera slut (like myself) there.

Speaking of "sluts" don't let anyone call you that, or anything that makes you uncomfortable. Dressing sexy is not an invitation for harassment. If someone is bothering you, get away from them and notify con security.

Other Nurse duties include promoting the drive at any panels you're on, just a mention in your intro is fine, and talking it up to people (especially guys) in hopes they'll join our ranks next year.

The only set times for N-Nursing are the Rocky pre-show skit and the photo shoot. If you want to be part of the group on stage before Rocky, meet at President's CD just after 11:00. We go on around midnight and take the hour before hand to go over our bit and work out any kinks. (I'll have the details on said bit at the con.)

Likewise, if you want to be in the next calendar you need to attend the photo shoot. [info]gingerkat is trying to arrange this year's for ::EDIT:: Saturday afternoon. An exact time has not yet been announced.

So that is what's involved in being an Arisia Naughty Nurse. Any questions?

ARC web site for 16 year old donors
The ARC web site for 16 year old donors is up and has an aggressive, upbeat approach. They're targeting high school drives, so a lot isn't helpful for us, but there's a lot of information there if you're curious. Also, our Arisia web site has been updated to include the MGH parent information sheet and consent form.

On the afternoon of Saturday the 17th I need to know what times people have available for our photo shoot. Bey, I know your friend is probably only available on Friday evening, but I might be able to accommodate you.

16 year old blood donors at Arisia
Text of my message to many of the Arisia09 leadership:

Please forgive the number of you receiving this. I hope to get the right information to the right people, clearly and briefly.

On December 23, 2008, the Massachusetts general laws were changed to allow 16 year old donors to donate blood with parental permission. Yesterday NECN covered the first lawful donation by a 16 year old in Lexington at an ARC high school drive. After much discussion with the ARC, MGH, and Children's, I have gotten agreement about our approach. MGH has sent me permission forms and I expect Children's soon. These are FDA regulated forms and cannot be altered. We may post them on the Arisia web site for parents' convenience. I've appended them to this message and will have printouts at the Heinlein Society table.

We will not be making a big announcement or any specially targeted recruiting effort due to this change. We will respond with information and permission forms, if approached by prospective donors who ask about this. MGH and Childrens' are both prepared for this change and have provided their staff members with additional training for anticipated needs of these donors, who are statistically likely to be lighter first time donors. Both institutions are very experienced with excellent patient safety records.

Would you please have the Arisia webmaster contact me if (s)he has any questions? Any and all questions are welcome from all of you, and I'll do my best to address them. Thank you all for your continued support of blood drives at Arisia.-John

Bone Marrow Registry Drive info on website!
It will also be in the Program Guide and I hope in in at-con newsletter (gotta bug folks at-con).

Not sure on table location yet, going to ask fantables. If not I can make a sign for you guys and a sign for us so crosspollination can happen.

I have no idea what I'm wearing yet. Maybe my W.B. Mason outfit again. Unsexy, but fun.

    Email blast
Just to keep you all in the loop, here's the text I just sent out to last year's donors. Please feel welcome to send it farther afield for your target audience. Tip: bcc your recipients! Thanks, all!

    Subject: Arisia09 Blood Drive?

    Hail, Arisia Donors and Supporters!

Thank you! You are receiving this because you (or someone else) gave your email address to me or to one of the Heinlein Society Naughty Nurses last year for our Arisia Blood Drive with MGH. Thank you, so much, unless this is not welcome, in which case, please accept my apology for cluttering your inbox.

I hope you had a wonderful donation experience last year and that you'll consider being a donor again this year. And bring a friend! As you can see at "http://2009.arisia.org/blooddrive", we've doubled our capacity this year by adding Childrens' Hospital on Sunday, January 18th. Please consider signing up in advance by replying to this message or by emailing "blood-drive@arisia.org". We will again schedule two at a time, every ten minutes, from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m., but this time you can choose Saturday or Sunday. There are details about the minor differences between MGH and Childrens' available from the links on the Arisia Blood Drive page. These are most notable regarding tattoo deferral policy, and both are putting together new policies regarding sixteen year old donors. Parental permission is required, but donors can now be as young as sixteen years old in Massachusetts.

Unless you decide to correspond with me, this is the one and only message I'll send to you based on the sign up sheets from last year. Now you'll know what you're getting into if you give it to us again this year. Please do! Thanks.-John

    Updates?
With only a couple of weeks to go, the list is kind of quiet. What plans are solid at this point?

    Will there be a party?
Are we singing in the sketch?
Will there be a photo shoot?
Are there any specific events we need to be at?

    Just wondering.

A request from the Bone Marrow Registry
I am passing along a request I received. What are your thoughts people?

I'm running a bone marrow registry drive at Arisia. Would your nurses be willing to wear Heal Emru buttons and/or mention it to folks? "Heal Emru" buttons are associated with a site Tamu Townsend started to promote bone marrow donor registration after her brother Emru developed leukaemia.

You can check it out at http://www.healemru.com/index-en.php.

We'll probably be working with http://www.crir.org/. I can give you more info soon.
