Wrist Braces

  • Aug. 18th, 2008 at 11:08 AM
Hey all,

I have an RSI injury in my right arm that causes everything to hurt from my elbow to my shoulder when I don't use a wrist brace. My doctor gave me a brace but I hate it because it doesn't breathe, and he told me to just buy another one online. I've looked at the options and there are like 8734289634862 and I'm totally overwhelmed by choices.

Those of you who use wrist braces, which did you buy and why? Can you suggest me a few models?

Thanks!

Joint pain?

  • Jul. 31st, 2008 at 4:38 PM
My mother's knees have been bothering her a lot. My father is a paraplegic and very dependent on her, so she does not have time to really give them a break. She has a doctor's appointment scheduled, but it is still months away.

Anyone have any good experiences taking supplements or anything along those lines? What works? :]

Thanks!

Knee Problems

  • Jul. 25th, 2008 at 3:53 PM
I am a student, so I do a lot of sitting. For some strange reason, I am always sitting cross legged and my knees begin to ache after awhile. I am not looking for a diagnosis, but I am looking for reccommendations to ease knee pain. I know I should sit a different way, but it is very uncomfortable for me and sitting cross legged is as natural to me as breathing. Even when I am out walking, they begin to ache so I don't think it is an inactive issue.

I do yoga and that helps, but the effect doesn't last too long. I read somewhere about glucose and chondroitan but the bottles are close to $20 each, so I don't want to buy something that might just have a placebo effect. Has anyone tried this for a similar problem?

Are there any specific stretches to strengthen the muscles in and around the knees?

I also heard about if a person loses 10lbs their knees will be super happy because all that extra pressure is gone, which would make the load lighter on the knees.

For the record, I am 5'5", female, ~150lbs and I'm 20 years old.

painkiller advice

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 8:44 AM
NOTE: I've already been to a doctor, so I'm not asking for a diagnosis and I will be seeing him about physical therapy.

So I have tendinitis and another problem (can't remember the name, but it sounded like ox-man-slaughter)  The doctor recondmended, I avoid stairs and squatting (can't do, due to job), get a knee brace (done and I'm getting a second one), and take pain killers if needed.  I really like an alternative to the painkillers, like recipes for rubs or a nice general atlernative

my knee!

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 5:06 AM
So I had surgery on a torn lateral miniscus last august, and im still having some issues. not as bad as itwas though, ill give it that. Basically i need to strength train the muscles in my leg, which I am doing at the gym but my knee hurts a lot when i walk a lot.. problem is i live in nyc.. i walk everywhere.. What do you suggest for pain? anything natural that's good? I just saw a knee specialist a couple weeks ago that said i need to strengthen my quads and stuff because I'm double jointed and my weight isn't distributed as it should be normally. Any suggestions for the pain though? I put ice packs on it at night.. thats about it..

Thank you for any suggestions.

Hi.  I was diagnosed a few years ago at the age of 37 with osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia.  I was in excellent shape then, and really shocked by the news.

I'm looking for natural solutions to the chronic pain and inflamation, as well as aromatherapy, remedies that alleviate stress.  I have a young daughter, and really want (and need) to stay as active/able as possible.  I've found that the chronic pain often causes an anxiety/mild depression reaction.

anti-inflammatory foods/herbs?

  • Jun. 30th, 2008 at 4:18 PM
I tried to search the memories and tags, but I'm brand new to this and might have done a poor job. I'm not even sure what to tag it under specifically?

I've got a serious knee injury that has left me unable to walk for a full month now. My physical therapist says I can walk on it as soon as the swelling goes away. She wants me to take ibuprofen constantly in addition to ice/elevation/rest/compression. I can handle a low dose, but much more and my stomach stops digesting food. I'd rather take the low dose and supplement with foods/herbs that have anti-inflammatory properties. But what would they be?

A google search sent me in many directions - most related to weight loss and heart disease.
The background: I have osteoarthritis (aka degenerative joint disease) and I'm moderately overweight. It's a cycle--I exercise, lose twenty or thirty pounds and feel so much better, then the arthritis flares up, I slack off on working out, and I gain the weight back. Right now I'm twelve pounds from my 'goal' weight (twenty-two pounds from my ideal weight, but for this go-round I'm trying to be realistic).

I was intrigued to read here about apple cider vinegar--it's supposed to help arthritis and weight loss. Bonus!

My questions: Does any kind of ACV work or must it absolutely be unpasteurized? The 'mother of vinegar' stuff sounds so gross to me--do I seriously have to consume it? Has anybody here gotten good results with ACV, either pasteurized or not? I could use some encouraging news.

And another issue: I used to rely on those 'Icy Hot' patches for pain relief, but lately my body only seems to register the 'icy', not the 'hot'. And cold on arthritis pain just doesn't cut it for me--ouch! (Icy Hot is one brand name; I've tried others like Ben-Gay or whatever with the same issue.) Any thoughts on home-made herbal poultices? At this point I'm almost willing to try slapping some hot sauce on my hip. Almost. Seriously, I was thinking of trying something along the lines of an old-fashioned mustard plaster. Is that crazy or what?

Thank you in advance!

Arthritis/hand swelling

  • Jun. 9th, 2008 at 9:30 PM
Anyone have any experience with random hand and finger joint swelling (causing itchy spots), perhaps having to do with arthritis? I've been ignoring when I call 'hot spots' on my hands for years, but lately (the last few months) they have been getting progressively more serious, to the point that today I can barely type, because the joints where my thumbs meet my hands are so sore and swollen (pushing the space bar hurts!), and the skin around the first joint of my right pointer finger feels like it is going to split. The hot spots move around my hands (lately on a daily basis), and do not seem to be an allergic reaction, since that was our initial thought and we've ruled out all the likely culprits. I've also tried benadryl cream on the swollen spots, thinking they could be welts, with no success.

Arthritis runs in my father's family pretty strongly (it was one of the reasons my grandmother was in a wheelchair for the last 20 some years of her life) but hell. I'm 25! Any other possible reasons? Any tips on managing the pain and swelling? We are expecting our new insurance cards in the mail any day, but as it is, I can barely pick up my girls, or a coffee cup. Booo.

eta: I just discovered the "Joint health" tag - I looked for hands, arthritis, and others, but didn't see this one. I'll scan it, but feel free to add any thoughts. Thanks!

Pain management for arthritis?

  • Jun. 4th, 2008 at 9:48 AM
I've just been diagnosed with a rare form of inflammatory arthritis, which my rheumatologist thinks explains the fatigue, joint pain, and elevated sedimentation rate.

Any recommendations for how to treat this with integrative medicine? He recommends taking Aleve and Tylenol when the pain starts, and using heat and hot baths (in addition to rest and "pacing" myself) when it continues. I'm concerned, though, about the long-term effects of popping so much Tylenol every day.

TMJ disc dislocation

  • Nov. 1st, 2007 at 7:12 PM
Hey everyone. I just came back from the dentist to review the findings for my MRI. I do have TMJ (gee, I knew that!) and my disc is dislocated. Originally I got TMJ from a nightguard that a dentist gave me to stop my teeth grinding. This 'specialist''s idea(only idea acutally) is to give me a splint(kind of like a nightguard!) to reposition my jaw in such a way that it recaptures my disc which has scooted up out of reach. Given that I've had a nightguard twice and it made it worse I'm a little scared of this option. Plus, I'm a medical librarian, I've been doing research on splints for TMJ and they seem pretty controversial. Some insurances wont pay for them because there isn't concrete evidence that they work. Plus from what I've been reading, disc dislocation doesn't necessary equal pain. People can have their TMJ discs in the wrong place altogether and not be symptomatic at all.

My question. Has anyone come up with this before? Anyone have anymore natural treatments that would help relieve the clicking/popping/grinding of my jaw that doesn't seem to be in the right position. I'm scared of splints, because it made it worse before, and they seem so controversial. And their expensive! Chiropractic? Homeopathy/ Herbs? Nutrition? Anyone have their TMJ linked to heavy metal issues or anything like that? Physical therapy?

Hand soak

  • Jan. 22nd, 2004 at 9:17 AM
I have been working at a coffeshop for over two years now. I got accustomed to hands with bits of espresso enmbedded in. But, recently it is driving me mad- that I can't seem to get all of the brown discoloration out at the end of the day by simply washing my hands.
On top of that, it appears that I am having some aching in the outer joints of my left hand. I am thinking this might have come from repetative motion at work.
Is it possible for some sort of daily hand soak to help with either of these conditions?
Thanks!
