[mood | curious]

Hey everyone I have a couple of questions..
ONE! got a friend who needs to find a good lawn service. He lives in South Nashville. Any recommendations?

TWO! I'm trying to find somewhere that sells live feeder mice, anybody know where I can get them? I've been to aquatic critter and Petsmart, but Petsmart doesn't do feeders and Aquatic only sells frozen.

Australian football, 2 PM today at Elmington Park [Jul. 11th, 2009|12:30 am]

aussieintn
The Nashville Kangaroos play their arch-rivals, the Atlanta Kookaburras, at 2 pm today. The Nashville Kangaroos have experienced an up-and-down start to their season:
  • A win against Baton Rouge in the season opener;
  • A loss in their visit to Florida;
  • Winning the inaugural John Harrell Cup in Louisville;
  • An excruciatingly close loss to Chicago on the road; and
  • A display of skill and stamina in winning against Ohio Valley

In 2008, the Atlanta Kookaburras visit to Nashville was highlighted by a dramatic fourth quarter rally by the Kangaroos to win by 11 points.

To say these teams know each other well is an understatement. Kangaroos co-founder Mike Powers moved to Atlanta shortly after helping the 'Roos get started, and promptly founded the Kookas team. With a relatively short drive between these arch rivals, it is only natural they would regularly square off for bragging rights in the South.

The game this weekend will be at Elmington Park (3531 West End Ave) on Saturday July 11th with the tip off set for 2 pm. It will be the 19th time these two teams have clashed, going all the way back to the 1999 Australian Festival. The Nashville Kangaroos lead the all time series 14-4.

Be sure not to miss this classic collision. If history is any guide, it will take every ounce of energy for the winners to earn the right to sing their club song.

In a few weeks i'm going to have 5 baby boy rats to give away. I'm not asking for any kind of re-homing fee, all I ask is that they go to a loving and competent person who won't feed them to snakes or something. It's still a few weeks away, so if you know anybody who might be interested, GET THE WORD OUT, SON!

Fireworks? [Jul. 1st, 2009|03:44 pm]

[mood | curious]

Where's the best place to buy fireworks? We're hosting a little gathering so we're not going to be able to make it to the big ones downtown this year. But I'd like to celebrate my country's independence by blowing up a small part of it. ;)

Anyone know of cool (read: less mainstream) things happening on the evening of July 4th that are NOT the main fireworks show by the river?

And/or places from which the fireworks can be well seen that aren't down by all the other festivities-- such as a tall building or hill or something. I would like my night to include fireworks, but maybe not the stressful chaos of the celebrating masses. I understand that these locations are probably a well-guarded secret, or else they would be overrun by people and ruined, but it can't hurt to try asking.

Thirdly, where might a person set off their own fireworks without getting in trouble with the police? I'm not sure if it has to be private property or just outside of city limits. Specific locations would be great, since I don't know anyone with a farm around here....

Thanks again [Jun. 30th, 2009|10:18 am]

Just saying a quick thanks to those who directed me to the Bourbon Street Blues Bar during my trip to Nashville. I had a blast. I stayed at the double tree which is about three blocks from the blues bar. So with all that Printers Alley had to offer I didn't need to travel far. Although I did make it down to Broadway a few times.

I also found myself spending a decent amount of time in Lonnie's Western Room. I'm not a country music fan, and definitely not a singer myself, but I found myself infatuated with one of the singers there. So that was nice. A little vacation from reality for a few days. :)

Anyway, it was a great trip and I hope to make it back again soon.

Thank you.

local eating [Jun. 29th, 2009|08:15 pm]

Hello Nashvillians.  My name is Jackie and I moved here about a month ago from Wyoming.  My question is about food in Nashville.  Is there any food here that is unique to Nashville (like in the Northeast it's all about the UTZ chips, in Colorado Boulder Chips was really popular).  Any foods that you can only find in Nashville??    Also your favorite, locally made candy/chocolate shops?

Looking for lawnmowing/hedge trimming in Antioch [Jun. 26th, 2009|12:48 pm]

djmedieval
With the exception of a hispanic guy I had doing it for a while till he moved (him + his partner did the job in 10-15 minutes with a riding mower,) everyone else seems to do one of the following:

1. Show up with a standard push lawnmower and spend 2-3 hours mowing the lawn
2. Show up with a meth addict and a standard push lawnpower, and leave him at my house for 4 hours mowing the lawn
3. Made multiple appointments to swing by and mow the lawn, and just not show

I just want someone to come to my house on a semi-regular basis and mow my lawn/trim the hedges. Is that so much to ask for?

Anyone have a favorite?

landlord/tenant help? [Jun. 23rd, 2009|12:15 pm]

quiet_light
I'm pretty new to Tennessee so I have no idea if this is normal for this state or not...

I got a notice from my apartment complex saying they were doing mandatory *quarterly* inspections. The notice said they would be coming by at some point in a one-week period and that they couldn't give a specific time, or even day, for when this inspection would happen. The notice also told me that I needed to confine any animals I had.

So here are my questions:

Are inspections like this the norm for Tennessee?
More importantly, is it legal? I mean, 4 inspections a year???
How can they do this and not even tell me exactly *when* they will be here? I can't keep my pets in a box for an entire week -- that's just ridiculous.

I really do not want people in my apartment when I am not home.
I called and asked if they could at least tell me which day they would be inspecting my building, so I could make sure I was home, and they refused to give me a day.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Editing to say: Thanks for all of your responses, I really appreciate it! I am going to contact them again, in writing, asking for a specific day and explaining my reasons (ie, not keeping my pets confined for an entire week. Thanks again!

Pondering [Jun. 23rd, 2009|11:44 am]

gypsynash
We're all familiar with the old saying that goes something like "Want to make God laugh? Just tell him your plans!" Paraphrase it any way you need to to suit your particular beliefs, long story short is those relocation plans to Leiper's Fork that I mentioned in a post months ago now, have evaporated with some poor soul's hedge fund/economic misfortune and left us without the address we thought we had in the bag. I'm looking at this as an opportunity for a sort of do-over. Maybe we weren't meant to settle way out there after all. For those of you that have spent many a year in the Nashville area or just know the area well, if you could live anywhere in a radius of, say, half an hour/40 mins. of downtown, regardless of cost, where would it be and why? My needs are very simple. I'm looking for a quiet area (trees, a little land) where your neighbors can't see right in your windows or hear you sneeze, sirens aren't audio-wallpaper and you can sleep at night not having to worry if you locked up or not. Somewhere with your run of the mill creature comforts and standard retail establishments not too far away but not about to become the next hot suburb and explode into CookieCutter, USA. Am I deluded beyond help or am I right on the money thinking that Nashville has plenty of this if I just look in the right places? As always, your input is eagerly anticipated and very much appreciated.

Franklin Apartments [Jun. 21st, 2009|08:05 pm]

ghost5576
Evening all --

I'm looking to move to the Franklin, TN area (around Moore's Ln or Cool Springs Blvd). I've found several apartments in my price range, but the ratings for them on ApartmentRatings.com scare me. Has anyone out there ever lived at The Landings of Brentwood or Franklin Oaks (though I am leaning more towards The Landings for the location)? I'm looking for nice (perfect isn't necessary) and quiet. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you!!

Hair and Chocolate [Jun. 19th, 2009|12:49 am]

mintylim
I would like to know of decent hair stylists in the Hendersonville area. I'm getting kinda fed up with stylists who don't seem to honor my cut requests (even though I bring in picts of what I want, accounting for my hair's texture/density/whatever) or lack the skills to do them.

Also, anyone know of any chocolate cafes anywhere in the state? I don't mean a coffee shop that offers some chocolate desserts, but a restaurant specializing in serving fine chocolate.

Huge moving sale [Jun. 18th, 2009|09:34 am]

celinabot
We are having a multi-family moving sale this Saturday, June 20th, starting at 8 AM. My husband and I are moving cross-country, so we're getting rid of a lot of stuff! Some furniture, DVDs/video tapes, linens, kitchenware. Lots of clothes (H&M, Free People, Banana Republic, Anthropologie, among others), cool books (philosophy, music, poetry, fiction, lit anthologies) and TONS of cds and tapes (indie rock, good country, folk, weird stuff, nashville bands/songwriters). We also have a keyboard for sale, with stand.

I also wanted to offer up thirty-two Old Crow Medicine Show bootlegs to anyone who might appreciate them. They're free, just come and get them on Saturday. I also have some free Ben Folds Five (I have a few copies of their last live show as a band.. free to whomever wants to come and get them!)

Address is 1231 Currey Road, Nashville, 37217.

Two Questions [Jun. 17th, 2009|06:20 pm]

uhohlissa
[mood | curious]

I have two very different questions that will probably sound bizarre when juxtaposed, but I'm going to do it anyway since I've always found this community very helpful! More intelligent people LJ than Facebook, sorry to admit. lol

First, I have a house cleaning business. I have been searching all over for free places to advertise without a lot of luck. Where I grew up, anyone could post on local bulletin boards like at the public library, but I've had a hard time finding local places to put up a plain flyer with tear-off strips. I don't really have the money to pay for advertising, and I know that it's not okay to stick flyers on people's mailboxes, so I absolutely do not do that. Anyone know of any places where I could post a flyer and not get the ax?

Secondly: I clean for a living, but my true passion is photography. I have had my "big girl" professional camera for two months now and damnit I'm tired of taking pictures of buildings and landscapes!! Yet posting on Craigslist has gotten me some really odd responses that I don't want. Would anyone be interested in meeting up at a public place to do some simple portait-style photography? As a former model, I have plenty of experience in front of the camera, and I'm anxious to see what I can do *behind* one, using tips and tricks that I found helpful when I was being photographed. I will be happy to email you the pictures for you to do with as you please.

Responses to either are greatly appreciated! TIA!
