cowhunt [Apr. 18th, 2009|11:21 am]

i hope it is okay to post this here - mods, please delete if you think it is necessary.

some of you may remember me from nano past, and wayne is, of course, wonderfully unforgettable. we're carrying over the fun we had with the writing sessions for nano and the creative sessions that followed nano and starting a coworking facility for all independent and freelance folks to work. and yes, that includes writers! and so, we're hosting an event to raise a bit more money before we open.

details:

It’s spring time. That means it is time to go cowhuntin’!

Don’t worry, we’re not really hunting cows. The Cowhunt is what we’re calling our own version of an urban adventure where teams solve clues, photograph themselves with proof, and race to the finish line (a pub!) for prizes. It’s a play on the word coworking, which is sometimes pronounced in jest as cow-orking. And while we’re not sure what is involved with orking a cow, we think the big mammals are fun and cute enough to use as our mascot for our urban adventure. It’s fun, the weather is generally nice this time of year, and it’s a great way to experience the city while raising funds for a new coworking facility for Toronto.

Choose a partner (or let us know if you need a partner and we’ll randomly match you with someone else who needs a partner), register yourselves, and have fun! Must be 19yrs of age or older. Registration is $15 per person. Space is limited. The Cowhunt starts at 11:00am on Sat Apr 25, 2009 in the Annex.

I know, I just emailed this to all of you ... but it's important stuff! [Oct. 28th, 2007|11:18 am]

monkeyman
Well, here we are, folks – standing on the verge of another year of plotting, moaning at the hackneyed lines we come up with, refusing to go back to correct typos, anxiously updating our word counts every 500 or so, too much coffee and too many hasty, snack-based dinners … but I have a feeling you're just like me, and you wouldn't miss it for the world! So let's get our novel ideas in order and hit the ground running!

Let the excitement begin! I think we're putting together a good mix of writing sessions and social events for everyone ...

As a representative of NaNo Toronto ... [Oct. 3rd, 2007|08:11 pm]

monkeyman
Just a quick note:

As a part of this year's NaNo, I've decided to go sort of as a Toronto representative to this NaNo event in San Francisco:

http://www.nanowrimo.org/writeathon

It gives me a chance to raise money for The Office of Letters and Light (NaNoWriMo's parent company) above and beyond what I donate personally, and also gives me the chance to go to San Francisco and meet and greet some of our fellow novelists from all over the world! So here's the info. for making a donation if you'd like to help me out:

"Please take a moment to visit my online fundraising page and make a donation. It's really easy - you can donate by credit card and receive a record of your donation. Here’s my page:

http://www.firstgiving.com/deejsylvis

All donations are secure and sent directly to Office of Letters And Light. Please join me in supporting Office of Letters And Light and a fabulous cause!"

Again, none of the money goes to me, my travel costs, etc. are my own. It's just a donation from my writing 'posse' to NaNo at large, a little something I can bring them to say thanks for everything this event has been for me. If you want to chip in, I'd be grateful personally and in my role as a liaison for the folks down in California.

I'll be posting this a couple of other places as well, and sending email to some folks. I apologize if you wind up seeing this more than once.

Hey, folks! One short month to go!

I wanted to give you a heads up on a few things. First and foremost, the new NaNo site should be launching as of -- gulp -- tomorrow! Don't be checking first thing in the morning, though, as they say right on the front page that it'll probably be evening (and evening Pacific time, which means LATE evening for us) before they open the doors. Still, check in there if you get a chance!

Second, I wanted to announce the location for the Kick-Off Party for 2007: The Butler's Pantry, on Markham in the Annex. Check http://www.butlerspantry.ca/locations.htm if you need directions. And again, it'll be on October 30th, starting at 7 pm. So make a plan to be there! Naturally, we want to see you at as many events as you can squeeze in, but the Kick-Off and Closing parties are always particularly special occasions.

In related news, for those of you on Facebook, there is an event listing for the Kick-Off at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=12830215222 (sponsored by the Toronto NaNo group on Facebook, at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2346009821) -- so check that out if you're doing the Facebook thing. But don't worry if you aren't -- we'll be announcing everything there and here, to keep everyone informed. And soon, we'll be announcing everything on the Toronto Forum at the NaNo page, too!

Meanwhile, we've been busy with the planning! We've got about 10 writing sessions and 6 or 7 social events planned for the month, so there'll be lots to do. What we're still figuring out now is where we'll do it! So if any of you have suggestions for places you like in the city and think would work well, or places you work and have a little pull -- or hell, just places you've heard of and think are worth checking out. We're looking for locations for three or four bigger gatherings, some ideas for the writing sessions, and we could use some good ideas for the overnight session, too. Your help is greatly appreciated!

We'll be asking for your help in other ways, too, as things get closer -- we're really trying to make this not just Heather and I making decisions for the group, but the two of us facilitating the best year of novel-writing for Toronto yet. So if there's any way you want to jump in and be involved, just let us know!

That's about all for now (folks who did Script Frenzy earlier this year with me as ML know that I tend to ramble). Have a great October, and I look forward to writing with you all very soon!

Counting down the days ... [Sep. 24th, 2007|11:38 am]

monkeyman
Hey, NaNo folk! This is your friendly co-Toronto-ML coming at you. We had a decent turnout for the picnic, and everyone seems to be getting excited about the onset of NaNo '08 -- so it seems like a good time to touch base and talk a little about what we've got planned for this November.

First off, mark it on your calendars -- the kick-off bash will be on Tuesday, October 30th; location and time TBA, but I should be able to announce that soon. It's definitely going to be on that date, though. This and the final party are the events you definitely should not miss! Heather (the other ML, if you don't know her yet) says she's gonna have some games planned, we should have some goodies to pass around, and of course lots of people excited to talk about their novels-to-be. The only way to make it through 50,000 words in 30 days is to get by with the help of your friends -- and you'll meet lots of new friends at the party!

Beyond that, we're starting to get things sketched out.

Meanwhile, we'll keep getting things ready for you. You'll see some of the stuff you expect -- a CD exchange, cool parties and a few prizes, chances to read your creations -- and probably some new stuff, too. I hope you're as excited for this November as I am!

NaNo Toronto Get-Together! [Aug. 30th, 2007|09:24 pm]

monkeyman
Are you excited about NaNo 2007 yet? What? You haven't given thought to NaNo 2007 at all? Well, let's get THAT changed right quickly!

We're gonna have a picnic-type gathering to let past, present and future NaNoers do some meeting, greeting and brain-picking as we all start to think, "What the hell am I gonna write this year?" So plan to come and bring friends or family with!

And that's not the only thing you should bring! First, we'd like to make it something of a potluck event, so bring along plates, utensils and something to drink for yourself -- and something edible to share around (if you make it at home, a list of ingredients to have handy would be nice, as we have vegetarians, vegans and some people with food allergies in attendance). We'll try to commandeer pic-a-nic tables if possible, but if not, we'll just spread out, so blankets might be useful as well.

Also, we're going to do a little bit of a manuscript exchange for those who want it. So if you have your novel from last year, and you've been going back and forth trying to decide who you can ask to read, maybe to help you edit the damn thing -- bring three copies along, and you can do a swap with someone else! It's a great way to keep your writing from last year alive while you prep yourself for starting something new come November.

So join the fun! We're going to meet at the main entrance to High Park, just south of High Park subway station, at 1:00 on September 16th, then make our way to an undisclosed (because we don't know yet) location for the fun and festivities. Hope to see you there!

Yes, Script Frenzy AGAIN ... [May. 30th, 2007|08:01 am]

monkeyman
Okay ... I'm not gonna keep hyping Script Frenzy to you -- either you're gonna do it or you aren't. (Though personally, I think you should.)

But I did want to extend an invitation to any NaNoers who might wish to attend our kick-off bash, just to be friendly to the newbies:

Script Frenzy Toronto Kick-Off!
Tequila Bookworm

We'll be in that swanky new upstairs space they have. Hope to see you there!

Script Frenzy! [May. 28th, 2007|12:11 pm]

monkeyman
If you're still on the fence about whether or not to do Script Frenzy, this is the time to decide you really DO want to write a screen-or-stage play in the month of June! We've got a nice-sized Toronto regional group (http://www.scriptfrenzy.org/eng/node/403721), which I'm now acting as ML for, and we're planning some fun events and activities -- come on now, join us. JOIN US!

The kick-off party is going to be this Thursday, May 31st, at 7 pm at Tequila Bookworm. Feel free to stop by; maybe we'll convince you to get off the fence and start writing!

Script Frenzy [Apr. 19th, 2007|12:57 pm]

Anybody planning to do this in June? It's basically a screenplay-stage play version of NaNo.

Just wondering how much interest there is in such a thing. I'm curious (though I have plenty on my plate this year as it is!), but wondering how many people are gonna play along.

The Writer's Inn Top 10 contest [Nov. 16th, 2006|11:06 pm]

[Current Mood | tired]

Thank you everyone for your comments to my question. Although I haven't really made any headway tonight despite my realization of using point form pushing things forward, I'm grateful.

If you wish to do something writer-y, but not necessarily write, please view this contest I put two of my books in. It's The Writer's Inn Top 10 contest.

Anyone can vote for this. The public can judge on the covers, the titles, the excerpts, and the descriptions.

The votes end this Friday, so if you'd like to help me out, please go here and vote.

At least it would be more interesting than the mayoral election |>=)

My name is J.J. and I'm a NaNo newbie.

**waits to hears, "Hi J.J."**

Anyway, I have a very newbie question. I've been having some trouble keeping up with my writing for NaNoWriMo, and am lagging seriously behind.

However, I discovered recently that when just typing things in point form about the biographies of characters coming up, or possible "filler-episodes-in-between-story-arcs" ideas, I was more able to fly than when trying to write things scene by scene. I was wondering if it would be ethical to write the rest of this novel in point form?

Just wondering... [Nov. 6th, 2006|11:11 pm]

Is there going to be anything like last year's handy-dandy PDF events calendar? I don't seem to be getting any events showing up on my "My NaNoWriMo" page and was wondering if there was a technical glitch somewhere.

Thanks.
