It's not an immediate solution, but it's the road to a solution. We've spent most of the summer doing medical tests of all sorts and seeing or waiting to see various specialists. As it happens, it was our family practioner who had the brainwave. Among the dozens of blood tests there have been some for cortisol levels, related to a potential sleep apnea problem. These levels were high, and our doctor decided to look into why. Sustained high cortisol levels in people who aren't on steroid drugs are weird, if nothing else. She ordered more tests, and started hunting for a local endocrinologist. There isn't one here, but there are 2 down in Victoria, about 2 hrs south. So yesterday we went to see the endocrinologist, and got a definite diagnosis. Notmywife has Cushing's syndrome, a condition in which your body starts making its own cortisol all the time. The syndrome explains all notmywife's physical and mental symptoms, from fatigue and muscle weakness to edema and mental confusion. Normal 24-hour cortisol levels are 70 to 220. Notmywife's 24-hour level was 732. So yes, definitely Cushing's. Who else is visualizing Governor Tarkin threatening Princess Leia? Just me then?

The next round of tests, starting next week, will narrow down what's causing the Cushing's and therefore how it will be treated. Most likely answer is surgery, but this could be caused by a pituitary gland tumour or an adrenal gland tumour, so they have to figure out which kind, and exactly where it is, and then she'll have the surgery. Likely scenario is that she'll have the operation Dec/January and be back to work by March. Disability has kicked in, and we should be able to manage for 6 months, though she'll be bored out of her mind by then. She can't work - she doesn't have the energy or concentration or memory to be a practicing lawyer, but she's not bedridden or anything. The girls and I are out of the house starting on Tuesday, and notmywife is a total extrovert. So I've talked her into auditing a Philosophy and Cinema class, and we'll see how that goes.

The best part -- there is absolutely nothing psychosomatic or stress-related about this condition. Purely medical model, nothing she could have done to prevent it, none of that "all in your head" victim-blaming that women so often get from male doctors. Oh, and if anyone is interested -- our GP is a woman, but every single specialist we've seen has been male.

I'd say that's fairly accurate...

To do : wade through allll the tabs I opened of interesting entries and fic from my skip=800 post-con. (seriously, what is it with my flist? normal weekends, the groups slow right down. Con weekends, ramps up to posting frenzy. I think a lot of these were fic codas to the Shrine ep on SGA, though. It would probably help if I got round to dl'ing this season. But I promised myself I'd dl Dr Who first and I still haven't done that.)

Write up the Edmund/Bacchus fic set post-battle. And then work out if the Caspian gibbering after he sees them is repetition or not.

Still waiting on Lucy for the Edmund post-war fic to come back. The problem with being used to getting all your beta-ing done through AIM : you forget that beta via email takes *time*. Of course, I discovered about seven spelling mistakes the minute I sent the file off...

Dear self, do I want to know why, even though in the books, the easiest people to slash Edmund with are Caspian and Eustace (which has most of the fandom screaming 'nooooo! If you must write Edmund/Eustace it bloody well better be one-sided crushing from Eustace or we will damn well hunt you down and get Reepicheep to do horrible things to your intestines!'), or Peter (the only Pevensie-cest pairing I'm remotely convinced by is Susan/Peter), my brain fixates on Edmund/Bacchus? They don't interact once in the books! Bacchus isn't in the films! ...Excuse me whilst I glare at Ivy from across the years for writing that single fic with the pairing in it. However, I'm clearly not alone in my insanity. All the feedback was very much in favour of Edmund/vicious lithe wine-stained young god. Far be it from me to suggest fandom in general is shallower than a shallow thing.

Oh, and something I'd forgotten to mention about Discworld con. This was a) interesting meta and b) broke Terry's brain. Stephen Briggs, in his role of Patrician, normally has someone wandering around as Drumknott, who acts as his assistant and marshalls the Dark Clerks. There have apparently been four of these over the years. The current one is a very pretty young woman named Esther (until you put her into the Drumknott outfit). At the gala, Esther turned up in a rather fab corset (for pics, go search Flickr for discworld2008 - she's in the white corset) but was still acting as Drumknott. Terry's brain set to gibber since someone pointed out that this would put an entirely new spin on all that Patrician/Drumknott fic out there... Esther and Stephen had very, very evil grins when they related this. And then came the meta discussion that 'well, there's no reason Drumknott can't be female. Even though Drumknott's referred to all the way through as 'he'. It could be tradition that the post of secretary is referred to as male no matter what the sex of the incumbent is. Like Dwarves.' And on the far side of the group, you could see Terry's brain leaking out of his ears...

Further on the subject of costumes : certain characters are very popular (you'll often have about five or six Tiffany Achings or Magrats or Otto Chrieks similar running around.). However, oddly, some characters are only done by one person, said person becoming *known* as that character. Normally because they've done it so well that no-one else feels able to measure up. What's really odd, though? This is often a character no-one's done before, or the last time was so long ago that it's faded. And somehow the knowledge filters through to newbies. Who have never been. Who never attempt said character. How? How does this filter down? Is it just because no-one ever normally thinks of doing that character so if you do there's a fair chance you'll be the only one?

List off the top of my head :

Simon as Carrot (this con, he was wandering around as Greebo instead since he felt it was more *him* - and he's a very good Greebo) - this could be a height and physique thing, admittedly.
Pam as Granny Weatherwax - it's not like you don't get a fair few Nanny Oggs.
Kev as Cohen - physique again?
All of the Silver Horde - physique? Not to mention Mad Hamish has it sewn up due to the wheelchair.
Heidi as Adora Belle Dearheart - ABD is clearly based off Heidi. Not that anyone outside would know this...
Constable Haddock - well, er, this was an original that Terry nicked. On the other hand, when it comes to the AMCW, most people I've seen tend to be 'random guard' since it's all-encompassing and they can be *them*.
Conina, I think it comes under the 'such a minor character it doesn't normally cross people's minds'

....BBC have just released the Merlin trailer on youtube, here. I'd heard that this was supremely pretty. I'd heard that this was slashy. Dear GOD. And wow, BBC, how much money did you spend on this?

Oh I love Camera Cafe.

Camera Cafe is a tv skit aired at GMA 7 and QTV 11. The setting is a small area in an office building, were the employees take a break to buy coffee. You have the view from the vending machine, and the whole story happens in that small space. It seems low budget -- one camera, the same set every day, but it's one heck of a brilliant show. The characters are effective and funny, the script is able to capture the comedy in a span of 5 minutes.

It originated from France and Philippines got a franchise of it. What makes it wonderful compared to the other shows that we base from other international shows (aka Betty La Fea, Marimar, Ako si Kim Sam Soon) is that they made a whole new set of characters and adapted it to the Philippine Setting. The jokes are Pinoy, which makes the script relatable.

Favorite duo: harvey and JC played by Berwin Meily and Epi Quizon
Favorite male character: Boss Ric played by Jaime Fabregas (I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy!)
Favorite female character: Pipay played by Vincent De Jesus (yes, I know. :)) Vincent in a female character. Watch the video to see what I mean.)

I'll try to find them on youtube. There are a lot of videos, which means I have to watch all of them. I don't mind, it'll save me from office boredom.

Last night's episode made me go LULZ. It's not just the story that had me glued to the tv, but one of their guest characters. Ms. Joy (played by Joy Viado) shows a visitor around the building. She introduces the guy to a fellow co-worker, Fonda (played by Candy Pangilinan). The name is full of win.

"This is Mr. Joshua Grobuns."

GHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Win win win!!! Epic win!

Mr. Grobuns is no where near the features of the real Grobuns. But he was so funny, I didn't have any violent reactions of basing his name from oh-so-dear-kulot.

Dream a dream

I was with two friends and this guy. We were visiting my supposedly former grade school in the forest. :| FOREST?! hahaha ano to, Peter Pan?

Two friends went ahead. I was left behind because I stopped to take out my camera from the bag. I looked up to see guy extending his hand to me.

I take it.

After a few steps of walking hand in hand, there was cheering behind us. So where did that group of people teasing us come from? I have no friggin' idea.

As a reaction, I pushed guy away and laughed. He pushed me back and took my hand again.

WHAT THE HELL. =))

There was a face. For a second I remembered the face when I woke up. Recalling it now, I forgot how he looked like. But I still remember a few details about him.

1. His skin was fair.
2. He wasn't skinny, nor fat. I'd say, he was lean. Something like the built of David Archuleta.
3. No, it wasn't Archie in my dream. Because if he were David Archuleta, I wouldn't be holding his hand. I'd be pinching his cheek because of all the cuteness standing in front of me. =)) Besides Archie belongs to someone else now. :))
3. He was wearing a white shirt. I can't remember his pants and what shoes he wore. I just remembered the white shirt.

I'm infatuated with a stranger in my dream. =)) I can't even remember his face. DAMNIT.
