A good week for authors [Oct. 8th, 2008|09:56 pm]

[music |Teen for God- Dar Williams]

I just got to see Howard Zinn! His show, Voices of a People's History of the United States was playing at Macky Auditorium (on the CU campus). It was wonderful.

This morning, I figured that there might be a signing (there was), so I went to look for my copy of A People's History of the United States. As it turns out, I didn't have a copy of A People's History of the United States. Yes, I can hear the shocked silence. The copy I thought I had is still at my mom's, which makes sense, given that it belongs to her. But I bought one of my one and had it signed.

Howard Zinn and Neil Gaiman in the same week? How lucky is that?

...Surely something will go horribly wrong very soon.

[music |The Fine Art of Poisoning- Jill Tracy]

Got to go to the Neil Gaiman reading tonight. God, I love that man. He read the second half of chapter seven from The Graveyard Book, which was a bit of mixed blessing, because it meant that I got spoiled. On the other, I got to hear Neil Gaiman read the climax of his latest book in person. Awesome!

There was no signing, but pre-signed books were available. So, I bought a signed copy of The Graveyard Book as well as the Neverwhere miniseries. That means that I can finally return the copy that [info]rocknlobster sent me in her infinite goodness, and which I have yet to return, months later. But now I will! Any day now!

Oh, and [info]tekararogue, you will be happy to know that Neil was asked how he intends to prepare for the upcoming zombie invasion. He told us that was very terrified, but was willing to support our new zombie overlords, and was waiting to know if the zombies were going to need people to write stories, or if he was just going to be brains.

I love that man.

In other words, I've signed up for [info]springkink again. And this time I plan on finishing all of my claims! Oh god, I suck so bad. But I pounded out one of them today. This is far less impressive than it sounds. My stories are so very, very short that writing a first draft in one day shouldn't difficult at all. But I rarely manage to write something in one sitting, so I'm happy. Now I just need to find a beta for it. Curse the small number of Count Cain fans on my flist. (Er, I mean, curse the fact that I have such a small number of Count Cain fans on my flist, not that the Count Cain fans on my flist should be cursed.)

I keep walking around the apartment, peering suspiciously at the bookshelves. I KNOW I read more of these! I just can't remember all of them. Come out and reveal yourselves! Which books did I read and take back to the library already? Oh well.

I failed hard at elaborating on August's books, but I hope to go back. Anyway, ask away on these!

Y bueno.

Cuidense mucho ♥

[music |Swan Lake(duh)]

I really really liked the Natalia Makarova production of Swan Lake I recently watched. Everything about it was wonderful: the sets, the costumes, the storyline( which is rare for a ballet, especially Swan Lake). The dancing, while not as impressive or passionate as in some of the more famous performances of this ballet, is nevertheless very nice, with a slower, more languid kind of tempo that gave the whole thing  a kind of dreamy  feel. It's also cuts out a lot of the dancing in acts I and III, making it so everything flowed better and no part seemed unnecessary or at all 'filler'. All this, combined with a generally darker lighting than most productions, made Natalia Makarova's Swan Lake seem like a much more plot-driven, fairytale-esque Swan Lake, instead of the usual excuse for pretty dancing.(Not that that dancing isn't sometimes very pretty.)

Dar Williams: Awesome artist or most awesome artist? [Oct. 3rd, 2008|03:39 pm]

[music |Holly Tree- Dar Williams]

Dar Williams, one of my favorite musical artists is going to be performing at the Boulder Theater on the 14th. To prepare, I bought her new album, Promised Land. I wasn't sure if I was going to buy it, but when I saw that it contained a cover of Midnight Radio, one of my favorite songs from my favorite movie, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, I was completely sold. It's a very good cover, though the original version, performed by John Cameron Mitchell will always have first place in my heart. But, while that makes Dar very awesome, it is not the most awesome thing on this album. You may be surprised. After all, a well done cover of one of my favorite songs. What could be better? I'll tell you.

I was listening to the album, not paying that close attention to the lyrics. A song called "Buzzer" started to play. I caught a few of the words and went, "Wait a minute... Is she singing about..." I checked the lyrics in the liner notes, and, yes, yes indeed, Dar Williams wrote a song about the Milgram experiment. I think that that may be the most awesome thing in the history of ever. Ok, maybe it's not as cool if you're not a huge psychology geek, but even if you're not, surely one must be impressed with an artist that intelligent. I can hardly wait to see her in concert. So excited!

I have no Dar icon, so I'll use Tori instead.

[music |The Fine Art of Poisoning- Jill Tracy]

As you may or may not recall, I'm doing a volume by volume commentary on the Count Cain series. Today, we'll be looking at volume two of what Viz calls the "Cain Saga."

I'll be doing a something a little different this time. I've unearthed my Sakura Crisis scanlations, and I'll be comparing them with the Viz release. Unless noted, however, quotes will be from the Viz edition.

Warning: There will be spoilers for the entire series in these commentaries. Massive ones.

Man, I was originally going to do the whole volume, but this has gotten long ,and it's getting late, so this is just the first two chapters.

ZETSUBOSHITAAAAA!!!!

¡¿CÓMO SE SUPONE QUE CLICKEE DRAGONES SIN INTERNET?!?1uno!

E-es tan importante... y encima que ahora tengo VALENTHS :D...
................

[music |La Cage aux Folles- La Cage aux Folles original Broadway cast]

This is a few days old, but Jack Thompson has been disbarred.

For those of you not in the know, Jack Thompson is a conservative Christian, now ex-lawyer, who has engaged in many crusades against whatever has offended his sensibilities, such as violent video games, The Sims computer game, and the Florida Bar Association. (Seriously. To quote Wikipedia, "He said that the bar was engaged in a vendetta against him because of his religious beliefs, which he said conflicted with what he called the bar's pro-gay, humanist, liberal agenda." And he wanted a Florida judge to declare the whole Association unconstitutional.)

Thompson has many words of wisdom, such as, "The Bible doesn't promote killing innocent people, Grand Theft Auto does. Islam does." His sheer ignorance is astounding. To quote him again, "Islam promotes the killing of innocent people. The Quran requires the infidel, whether Jew or Christian, to be killed. ... That's a core essence of the religion. ... Muhammad was a pirate who killed infidels and who advocated the killing of infidels - not a nice guy. Osama bin Laden is in keeping with his fine tradition." Besides being ridiculously bigoted, that's just plain incorrect. To quote the Quran, "And do not dispute with the followers of the Book ["Followers of the Book" refers to Christians and Jews- Veleda] except by what is best, except those of them who act unjustly, and say: We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you, and our God and your God is One, and to Him do we submit." There's also "Verily! Those who believe and those who are Jews and Christians, and Sabians, whoever believes in God and the Last Day and do righteous good deeds shall have their reward with their Lord, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve." It's true that there are also Quranic statements that advocate a more adversarial stance, but honestly, how many religious texts don't present their religion as superior to all others? None in the Abrahamic religions, that's for sure.

Some of the things he says leave me feeling confused, and, well, almost like a voyeur. Quoting Wikipedia again, "He also claims that the PlayStation 2's DualShock controller 'gives you a pleasurable buzz back into your hands with each kill. This is operant conditioning, behavior modification right out of B. F. Skinner's laboratory.'" I mean, a "pleasurable buzz?" Into your hand? Just how sensitive are your hands, Jack? It's not a vibrator. (Though, that gives me an idea for a controller/vibrator bundle pack. You'd hook everything up to the console, and when you scored a point...right, I'll stop now.)

I also like (well, for certain values of "like") his reaction the Bully video game. "We just found gay sexual content in Bully as Jimmy Hopkins makes out with another male student. Good luck with your Teen rating now." The ESRB was sort of like, "Uh, yeah, we knew that when we rated it Teen. It's not like it was hidden content." (That's a rather heavy paraphrase.)

But, enough with the boring stuff. I know what you're asking. You're asking, "Just how disbarred is he?" There are some answers here My favorites include:

"Jack Thompson is so disbarred he isn't even allowed to read Shakespeare." (Hee, dis-Bard. Sorry, it's my favorite.)

"Jack Thompson is so disbarred, he can't even file briefs in his underwear drawer."

"Jack Thompson is so disbarred he can't even practice the law of gravity."

You know, I'm actually still on this vibrator/video game thing. I think I need one for my DS. It would give shouting "OBJECTION!" in Phoenix Wright an extra oomph. And when Franziska hits you with her whip....right, sorry, I'll just be going now. Forget we ever had this conversation. Please.
