Pentacles
Naturally, Pentacles is the centre of commerce and trade. Many merchants either come from here or are set up here. Pentacles is like... the giant strip mall of the galaxy, where everyone comes to buy, sell and trade stuff. A giant item shop in the sky, as it were. Though Cups is a very expensive place to live, Pentacles definitely beats it out - the currency exchange rate is much higher, so obviously the only people buying are ridiculously rich. And yes, this means that merchants are ridiculously rich as well.
Climate: Very, very dry. In colder areas, you have tundra, and in warmer areas you have deserts and savannahs. There is some water on the planet, but most of it is imported from Cups. You won't find a lot of greenery on the planet. There is just enough to feed the few desert animals on the planet, and things similar to things like cacti, and beobab and acacia trees. Think Egypt, Africa and the Arctic.
Architecture: If you know those squarish, sandy-looking structures from Ancient Egypt, you can likely picture a typical city on Pentacles. The structures made from muddy brick generally have nothing more than a cellar and a main floor, while the richer individuals (merchants and nobility) tend to have grand stone structures, going up to three stories high and expanding over a lot of land (columns are a wonderful thing). Richer homes are decorated with something akin to limestone and gold.
Dress: There is a difference between the wardrobe of a merchant, a noble and one of the lower class. Merchants are out in the sun all day, and therefore they favour light fabrics, robes that cover them entirely, headwraps, and sandals with thick soles to protect their feet from the sand. Merchants are able to afford the same fabrics that nobles wear, but they prefer materials that breathe and allow them to stay cool in the sun. Nobles were a little lazier, and favoured the shade, so they were able to show off a little more - skirts and light, flowy dresses or robes, decorated with that gold-like substance up the wazoo. The lower class basically had crappy robes. Yes, we are totally Ancient Egypt here.
Physical: Pentacles natives mostly range from very dark to a medium-to-light olive tone, with lanky builds and dark eyes. There is a blip of very pale eyes among some of the noble lines, including the royalty - the Knight of Pentacles, also the prince, had steel blue eyes.
Imports/Exports: As mentioned earlier, one of Pentacles' major imports, from Cups, is water. They also get most of their vegetation from there. Wands provides merchants and nobility with juicier meats, leaving the desert animals for the lower class, for the most part. They export their craploads of the limestone and gold-like substances, rich materials for clothing and wraps, oil for lamps, that kind of thing.
Government: An ironfisted monarchy without any kind of council, Pentacles favours a large gap between the rich and the poor. It works nicely for the nobles of the planet, as they don't have to deal with things like 'the rights of the people' and filthy lower classes. This doesn't necessarily sit well with other planets, as most of the others have taken on a system that includes a senate or council to promote more equality. Then again, maybe some planets don't particularly care.
Naming System: In the culture of Pentacles, the naming system is very deliberate. Names are chosen for specific meanings, and these meanings are usually something abstract - such as "god is glorious" or "the god is satisfied". Much of it has to do with their polytheistic religion (very similar to Egyptian 'cause I'm lazy), or desired physical attributes. For the most part, people are only given a first name, but if one's is inscribed somewhere, it is usually grouped with the last four generations of fathers (A daughter of B, son of C, son of D, son of E). They are also given a seperate name at the time of their deaths, sometimes to please the gods and other times for personal reasons (like a wife changing her name to reflect devotion to her husband). The Knight of Pentacles' name is Kenehety (victorious and stubborn ruler). If he had lived to ascend the throne, it would have been changed to Sekhetu, which would have denoted his 'divinity' as the King (it means "powerful ruler", which is something I made up XD). |
