| Emiliana Torrini - Big Jumps |
[Dec. 16th, 2008|04:45 pm] |
I can't believe how crappy my last three years have been. Just terrible. But I'm ever hopeful that next year'll be better than the last, yeah?
Still, can't be afraid to break some bones; gotta make some big jumps... ( Lyrics... )

| Lenka - The Show |
[Oct. 6th, 2008|12:25 am] |
Just heard this song and it's on repeat for me. The part that sticks with me is:
I don't know where to go I can't do it alone (I've tried) and I don't know why ( Lyrics ) Buy it here. |

| Jackson Browne - I'm Alive |
[Aug. 19th, 2008|02:08 pm] |
Two years ago today, the woman I loved moved out. I remember that I spoke to my friend Hazel, who had divorced someone two years earlier to that.
Hazel said that, after while, you stop thinking of them. In the beginning, you think of them every minute. Then every hour. And then you'll realize that you hadn't thought of them in months. Had a hard time believing her back then. Cause I had all these beautiful plans for the two of us.
Turns out she's totally right.
The only reason I remember is because my calendar told me (which is admittedly weird in it's own right).
My brother sent me this song and I listened to it a million times during that time and then I just stopped. Dusted it off and listened to it today and memories of that period came rushing back.
Funny thing is that it wasn't bad at all. Kinda good in a strange way.
Life's odd like that, yeah?

| Blue October & Imogen Heap - Congratulations |
[Jun. 4th, 2008|12:23 pm] |
Just an amazing song and my favorite from Imogen. This video totally doesn't do it justice but it's the only version I could find - let me know if you know of a better one!
Something about the pleading sound of their voices make the chorus sound all that more plaintive:
I can't change your mind Can't change your mind (you left me) Can't change your mind (you left me) Can't change your mind (you left me, you left me, you left me) Make it go away Make it go away please

| Christianne Girvan - Snowflake |
[May. 19th, 2008|12:07 am] |
Something different!
OK, I know I'm breaking my own rules but I truly, honestly love this song by my friend Christianne and I think you will too. She said I could post it and the rationale behind the video is so you can hear the song; since she has no video, here's the whole song.
I ran into her tonight and she told me about a song she wrote and then she sent it off to me with these words:
A work in progress...hope you enjoy it! The inspiration for this song came from comments made to me walking the streets in Bedford Stuyvesant the neighborhood where I live in Brooklyn.
"Hey Snowflake! What 'cha doin on Arlington Place? You look like something on my frosted flakes!"

| Jaymay - Gray or Blue |
[May. 15th, 2008|12:31 am] |
Basically, saw her sing on Conan and fell in love with her voice. Bought her album immediately and, literally, every song there is a winner.
She and A Fine Frenzy are my two faves at the moment and it's hard to pick which lyrics I like the best from her. She's a native NYer and she sings what I think about the city.
My fave lines from this are:
Don't second-guess your feelings You were right from the start And I notice she's your lover But she's nowhere near your heart This city is for strangers Like the sky is for the stars But I think it's very dangerous If we do not take what's ours

| A Fine Frenzy - The Minnow & The Trout |
[May. 9th, 2008|11:50 am] |
I haven't gone a day this week without listening to this song. I actually avoided listening to this song when I first got the album because the name was so strange. BUT I eventually did and it's now my favorite song.
The song's about just basic kindness:
Help me out said the minnow to the trout I was lost and found myself swimming in your mouth
Later on the singer says
Please, I know that we're different We were one cell in the sea in the beginning And what we're made of was all the same once All the same We're not that different after all
Her voice is just amazing and this video is a testimony to that - she's being filmed in a noisy Barnes and Noble! And yet, her voice is still astounding.
Listen, you won't regret it. ( Lyrics )

| Eurythmics - It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back) |
[Apr. 9th, 2008|11:04 am] |
Another older song but one that deserves a second listen. I like it in spring for some reason.
In my head, I think that someone's coming back. Who that is is another question entirely. I don't have anyone but it's nice to think I did.
That probably doesn't make any sense to you.

| Beatles - A Day in the Life |
[Mar. 28th, 2008|01:00 am] |
Genre: Classic Rock
Quite possibly the best song that they ever wrote - the whole story of it can be found here.
When Lennon opens up with, "I heard the news today, oh boy..." it brings me back to high school hearing it in my brother's room.
I wish I could write like this.

| Zutons - Pressure Point |
[Mar. 25th, 2008|12:03 am] |
Genre: Rock
The chick playing the sax is named Abby - check her out playing the sax at 2:34 in. Man, that's hot.
I would marry Abby.
When this song first came out, I saw it on Letterman and thought the sax player was hella cool. Then they ran it on some blue jeans commercials and I picked up the album.
Such a good freaking album.
This song suits me right now. Man, I got a lotta pressure.

| Waterfront - Cry |
[Mar. 18th, 2008|12:01 am] |
Genre: 80s, pop, rock
I was 17 when this song came out. Bought it on vinyl cause that's what was out there at the time.
I mention that because there's this line that goes, I know you’re just sixteen, but looking all of twenty-one - ridiculously creepy now but it wasn't when you're 17 and dating a girl that looked all of 21.
To this day, I think the video stands the test of time. These two guys could walk into a bar downtown and not look like losers.
The way I dressed in the 80s...I can't say the same thing.
Sorry guys, I have no idea where to buy it. |

| Aqualung - Brighter Than Sunshine |
[Mar. 15th, 2008|09:05 am] |
Genre: Adult Contemporary, Alternative
After my last really bad breakup, a friend of mine sent me this song and I listened to it maybe a million times.
There's this line that goes, My heart was broke, my head was sore What a feeling, which was exactly how I felt.
It's a bit of a slow song, but I sometimes have it wake me up in the morning.

| Tift Merritt - Broken |
[Mar. 13th, 2008|07:50 am] |
Genre: Adult Contemporary, Country For those of you that read me regularly, I'm pretty sure you can figure out which lines I like the most, but if not, they are: Again and again and again, Again and again and again, Again and again and again,
I think I will break but I mend.

| The Whigs - Right Hand On My Heart |
[Mar. 12th, 2008|12:07 am] |
Genre: Alternative, Rock
First heard this song on the David Letterman clip you see above and just liked how it sounded but there's this line that goes: "Raindrops from the heavens, I'll eventually swim."
Mis-heard it the first time, actually, and thought it said, "Teardrops in heaven, I'll eventually swim" - which I took to mean that after enough crap, I'll make it.
Wasn't that far off, as it turns out.

| Esthero - Everyday is a holiday |
[Mar. 9th, 2008|11:32 pm] |
Genre: Pop, jazz
It's been such a long time since I was in love with anyone.
I have this absolutely ridiculous crush on a girl in my church, it makes no sense whatsoever. I'm always happy to see her, even if it is only for 8 minutes once a month.
Ridiculous, no?

| Phoenix - If I ever feel better |
[Mar. 7th, 2008|11:43 am] |
Genre: Dance, Pop, Breakup songs
I love this song because it makes me wanna hit a club and pick up some girlies.
But also because the lyrics are pretty cool - it's about the restarting of life after a breakup. I met a number of great women after my last hard break up, but I told them all, in one way or another, the following lyric from the song:
If I ever feel better, Remind me to spend some good time with you
It helped me out muchly.
