Current mood: lazy

They're just too cute to eat.
I recently acquired a shiitake mushroom "log," from the evil "making me buy stuff while bored at work" Internets. When I received it I stuck it in the fridge for four days then soaked it in dechlorinated water for.. almost two days. I put it on this plate last Sunday.

It looks like a birthday cake with the skewers stabbed in it.

I hope the flash didn't scare it.

I think something is wrong with me. I can't help thinking crude thoughts.

Now, I'm not sure if I've ever eaten a fresh shiitake mushroom. It's always the chewy reconstituted dry ones.

Looks like you have a good crop. Give them a couple more days and enjoy!!

There are a couple of them pinning against the side of the bag, too. The "humidity tent" that came with the brick just isn't cutting it, so I'll be moving it to a humidity chamber as soon as I get off my lazy butt and destroy a perfectly good plastic tote box thing.

It WOULD have been a good crop... but this morning I noticed a huge, growing patch of blue-green death. Trichoderma? I put the block in a trash bag and emailed the company. I also tasted one of the mushrooms, and now I am very sad, because it was very tasty.

OUCH! I definitely feel your pain. Usually, I've been at least able to get one good crop before the forest green starts in.

I've generally found trichoderma to follow excessive watering. There is a very sensitive balance between having enough moisture for growth of the mushroom and having so much that it encourages the kiss of the green death. Also, ANY contamination of your watering equipment is bad.

'The Mushroom Cultivator' also comments that carbon dioxide levels should be kept low and air circulation should be encouraged. Yeah, right. Not much chance of that in those plastic tents. The mushrooms produce carbon dioxide as they grow, which is why you have to air them out every so often. Try to keep as much of the moisture in the air and NOT on the brick itself.
