AboutThis is a community for anyone who's been raped, abused, or assaulted by someone they knew. It's also for friends, family members, etc., of these people.
THE MAJORITY OF SEXUAL ASSAULTS ARE COMMITTED BY SOMEONE THE VICTIM KNEW!
I have read as many as one in three women are sexually assaulted in their lifetimes.
There are relatively few cases of "a stranger jumping out of the bushes" attacks, compared to the number of cases involving friends or acquaintances. I dislike the terms "date rape" and "acquaintance rape" because I think the terms minimize the act, especially when this is more common than anything else. These kinds of assault are hard on the survivor, not only because of the assault committed, but also because a deep or assumed trust was completely shattered. The survivor then feels frightened about trusting others and ashamed for trusting the person/people to begin with.

1.) Preserve evidence! Whether you ultimately press charges or not, if you fail to preserve evidence, it will be much more difficult to have a successful prosecution.
2.) DO NOT take a shower. Put the clothes you were wearing in a plastic bag. Don't wash your hands (you could have your assailant's skin cells underneath your nails). Try not to use the bathroom; this might remove any genetic evidence that was left on your genitals or in your vagina.
3.) Call a friend you trust, and then contact the police or go to a hospital. The police and medical staff are there to help you, and they are (unfortunately) experienced with treating sexual assault victims. Don't be afraid to ask them for a counselor or for time to calm down.
Prevention, as always, is key. Be aware of your surroundings, and do not accept drinks from strangers that might have drugs in them. Go to a Rape Aggression Defense course, or know some basics in self-defense. Use the buddy system. Don't drink excessively or use other substances when not in the company of a small group of well-trusted friends.
