I'm so glad the [info]mutantx_fanart challenge is back. I've missed the impetus it gives me to keep drawing Brennan and Jesse. It's been well over a year since I last watched an episode of Mutant X so I've got to consciously try and keep in touch with these guys. The October '07 challenge had a seasonal musical theme, involving a passage of lyrics from the musical Titanic, which you can read here. We're just entering Spring down here at the bottom of the world, but it's been a fairly wet and gloomy start to the season these past few weeks, so despite the incongruity with the beginning of 'Fall' in the northern hemisphere, I still felt like I was able to get in the right mood for this piece.

I drew this last year some time. I think around January/February. It's done now.

Almost two months have passed since I last hosted one of my challenge submissions. In that time I've been busy working on two separate artworks, for the April and May contests, and, since I've recently finished both and since they're now both late, it makes sense to post them together in one entry.

In honour of April's Fool's Day, April's challenge prompt was "What Would NEVER Happen in Mutant X?" and called for the odd, the strange and the weird. Well, I'm pretty sure you've never seen the MX guys in a situation like this before! And in recognition of the holiday season I threw in a touch of Easter as well.

From another world... )

May's challenge was equally stimulating and no less challenging: create a snapshot of Mutant X for someone who's never seen the show before and describe it to them in one piece of fanart. I decided to go for a relatively straightforward interpretation of the prompt, which nonetheless incorporates everything I love about this show: it's comics, it's superheroes, it's mutant powers, it's two hot studs, it's slash, it's you!

March 2007's challenge is Mutant X: Crossover! Yep, that's right, it's mix 'n' match fandom time! I've been working on this submission for the last month or so (hence the reason it's so late!) because it's a big one. After all, such a wonderfully stimulating prompt deserves nothing less! So without further delay, allow me to present Mutant X's Brennan Mulwray and Jesse Kilmartin, Heroes's Nathan and Peter Petrelli and Supernatural's Dean and Sam Winchester in Whose Side Are You On? )

January/February's challenge is, appropriately enough, Mutant X: Valentine. I've drawn a lot of Brennan/Jesse pictures over the past few years, many of which are online, some of which have yet to make it; some of which are overtly slashy, some of which are not. But I really wanted to take this opportunity to draw this couple in such a way that it would be impossible to think they were anything but lovers. Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

December means only one thing in the Sanctuary: Christmas! So it comes as no surprise that the last month of the year featured a very festive challenge from [info]mutantx_fanart, namely that of "Secret Santa". We were asked to create a fanart gift for one or more members of the Mutant X team. I've never been one to take things too literally, so instead I drew two pictures of my favourite team members exchanging naughty gifts over successive years. I know it's incredibly late, but Merry Christmas everyone and a happy new year as well!

November's fanart challenge is Mutant X: Mealtime. I wanted to draw something sexy featuring Brennan and Jesse but when I didn't like the way that was turning out, I tried something a bit cuter but I gave up on that too and finally settled for a very traditional take on the challenge theme. It features the whole team but I was able to slip in a little bit of Brennan/Jesse love to make it especially... edible. This picture is based on original artwork by Joe Madureira and Tim Townsend.

October's fanart challenge is Mutant X Fright Night! It posed a somewhat unique creative challenge for me: how to draw something in tune with the terrifying prompt whilst still retaining my characteristically slashy content? I think the end result manages to combine both elements whilst adding more than a bit of humour as well. Watch out, this one's a little cheeky but it should still be PG.

September's fanart challenge is a departure from the more traditional 'theme' based challenges hosted by this community. Instead, this month we were given a number of base photos of Brennan as inspiration for fanart. As if the mere mention of Brennan himself isn't inspiration enough! )

June's fan art challenge is "Mutant X in action!" Now I've got drawings of Jesse and Brennan that certainly fit this description, but somehow I don't think Photobucket's gonna let me host them online! So instead we'll have to settle for this much less risque take on the couple. I almost didn't make the deadline this month. It was a case of too many ideas and not enough time or focus. I really buggered up my first attempt so I had to come up with plan B at the last moment. This one started out poorly too but at the end of all that pencilling, inking and colouring the final result isn't half-bad.

I got your back )
