Happy holiday season everyone!
First of all, by popular demand:
A Poll Historically, people have been allowed to pick their replacement in MBP. It made a lot of sense in the Dark Ages of MBP, circa 2001-2005, when we had no registration process, so people would say "Okay, I've been kind of inactive and this person really wants the role, so I'm handing it over." That way, we'd know who was supposed to go on the masterlist. It still sort of makes sense sometimes, because people tend to care about their former roles even when the stop playing. At the same time, it makes no sense whatsoever in some cases, when people just hold grudges against someone and say they want to "pick replacement" while in fact, they just want to keep another person from playing the role. What do you think? Or not at all? Please vote. Thank you. Poll #1501301 Choosing Replacement
Open to: Friends, detailed results viewable to: None, participants: 112Should players be allowed to choose their replacements? Just to clear this up: The poll is a rule-changing poll, which means that whatever is decided here will go into the rules. The poll will be up for two weeks starting today, until January 3rd, 2010.
Privacy Livejournal has this cool new feature called "My Guests", which shows who visits your journal. If you do not wish to be seen in a statistic like that, you can disable the feature. Go to http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/?cat=privacy and scroll all the way to the bottom, then make sure the box next to "My Guests" is UNTICKED ("I want to use My Guests to see who visits my journal and to be visible when visiting other journals and communities."). While you're there, you can also make sure that "Search Inclusion" ("Minimize my journal's inclusion in search engine results.) and "Comment Search Inclusion" ("Minimize my comment's inclusion in search engine results" are both TICKED. And that your "IP Address Logging" setting says: "Log IP addresses of nobody."

Clone Wars It has been suggested that we post a list of clones from now on, so you wonderful people know who's official and who isn't. We can't do that without your help, though. So please, if you know about any clones, comment with their usernames. For example, Peter Tork is officially torkp. We know that he has a clone, so if you know any Peter Tork who is not torkp, then that other guy is a clone. Again, torkp is the official Peter Tork.
LJ Holiday Coupons Ryan Jarman (thank you!) posted here about a special holiday promotion: LJ is giving every Paid or Permanent account holder ten free $10 coupons for the holidays. There are a few requirements, though: Those coupons only work when you purchase a FULL year of paid account. And they only work on accounts that are NOT paid/permanent through January 15th. ( In LJ speak )
I have coupons to give away. Who else does? Let's make this a market place: Comment if you want one, so someone can send it your way. (Remember your paid account must run out on January 15th latest!) And also comment if you have some to give away, so people can request them from you. Please comment to people if you're giving them coupons, so they don't get multiples.

Dear MBP,
Today, I would like to talk about clones! It's a really big and important issue and has been ever since the dawn of MBP.
First of all, here's a list of two currently very active clones. And their official counterparts.
quinto_z is a CLONE. The official Zachary Quinto is q_zach.
angolie is a CLONE. The official Angelina Jolie is angvjolie.
Please take a moment to check if you have the official impersonation added, or the clone.
Now, I can kind of understand wanting to play with active impersonations. Don't get me wrong, we all love to actively play instead of seeing a journal get sporadically updated.
And while we're on the subject of understanding... imagine you had a busy week. Maybe a few tests, big presentation at school, or stressful project at work that requires lots of overtime. The week after that you have to take care of some kind of family issue, or (why not?) your best friend splits up with his/her longtime partner and requires lots of best-friend attention (ice cream, shoulder to cry on, shopping spree, the works). Then midterms come up, or that holiday trip you've been planning for months. Anyway, you don't don't get around to playing much for a while.
What would you do if someone cloned your character during that time? And wouldn't you be thrilled if you checked the clone's user info and saw that the clone suddenly had a hundred or more friends?
Now, be honest. If you had a clone who mobbed you out of the role by pulling all your would-be friends on his side - would you be very eager to give the role to that person? Revenge isn't a nice trait, but I can kind of understand why someone would rather give their role to someone who has NOT been annoying them for weeks and months already, to the point of making the game a constant struggle!
Here's how you become an official impersonation in MBP:
Step 1: Check the masterlist. If a celebrity is taken, then you won't be the official impersonation. Therefore, common sense tells you that you should pick a celebrity who isn't taken!
Step 2: If a celebrity is taken but doesn't seem very active... oh wait. You'll still be a clone, no matter if the celebrity only updates every four weeks or doesn't comment much!
Step 3: If you check the rules section on the website, you can read the following:
Before you can start playing, you need to update at least once and then register by leaving a comment with your journal username, the celebrity's full name and the category your celebrity should be listed in at enter_mbp. Note that the registration process does NOT include adding a bunch of people, making pretty icons, getting v-gifts... or even having all the disclaimers in place. All we require is one entry that is less than six weeks old.
That's all!
Of course, if someone registers with a journal that doesn't spot disclaimers, then our lovely enter_mbp crew will point out the missing links and phrases and help the newbie through the process.
And here's the big, bad, important newsflash: When registering a replacement, we do NOT favor people who have been playing actively as clones! (We also don't shun them if they ever do become official, but we definitely don't favor them.)
MBP operates on a "first come, first served" basis. So guess what! If you've been playing as a clone for months and have a huge friends list and lots of icons and your best friend keeps buying you v-gifts: that really doesn't matter. Because in case a role opens up, the journal that REGISTERS FIRST, gets the role. Not the one with the most v-gifts or the coolest icons.
Another way of getting on the masterlist works as follows: An official impersonations can pick their successors by commenting to enter_mbp. And we still just require that new journal to have one entry that is less than six weeks old. Imagine that.
On a related note, there seems to be some confusion about the rules. More precisely about whether or not cloning is "against the rules." Let's have a look at the rules section. Our first rule defines that:
In order to be considered an official impersonation within the Must Be Pop universe, you have to be on the masterlist. And then the rest of the rules apply to official impersonations, because, you see... clones are not in this game.
This is important to grasp: Rules apply to impersonations IN this game, and clones are NOT in the game. We're not going to make rules for people who play in other games or just freelance a celebrity journal for their own pleasure.
The MBP administration has no authority over people outside this game. You see, we can't keep people from creating LiveJournals. We can't kick someone out who is not in the game. Sure, we could probably leave them comments (unless they disable that feature, block us or make it impossible for non-friends to comment), or send them PMs (unless... see above), or email them (if they list an email address). And then what? Require them to send an excuse note signed by their mom, dad, legal guardian or pet?
The only thing we can do is put a post in MBP to explain why it is a really, really, REALLY bad idea to encourage clones. And hope that people in this game are smart enough to understand the reasons. Because you, the players, are the ones who can do something about cloning. You see, clones fade away when people refuse to play with them. It's boring for a clone to stick around if they can't interact.
And the sad thing is that as long as I can remember, there have always been people who kept adding clones and playing with clones and trying to get their clone friends into taken roles. Until they were cloned themselves, at which point they freaked out, demanded justice and for their own clone to disappear immediately.
Yes, it's annoying when someone close to your character isn't around a lot. I promise, though: It's a lot MORE annoying when a bunch of people decide that they prefer a clone over you.

Just a quick heads up that Angelina Jolie has been cloned. The clone's name is angolie. Normally I wouldn't get involved, but the clone is deleting any comment anyone leaves that is against them. Personally, I think that's unfair, and I believe that people should know that the majority haven't been nice. I do realize that it's your choice if you add a clone, but I still wanted to give people a heads-up.
To the clone: Just because two or three people don't like someone who is active and does their best with the role doesn't mean you should clone them just to be an ass. Make a private storyline and leave the rest of us out of it.
It's one thing if the person never plays the role, never updates, and never comments. But that doesn't happen to be the case here. This, of course, is mainly my opinion. Oh yeah, and it happens to be a rule. But, whatever. I just wanted to make sure people knew.

Howdy, everyone. While my update isn't going to be nearly as exciting as the one directly below mine, I'd like to welcome you to the admin update of the week. Having made it onto your list, I humbly assure you that while my trousers are on, my pants are off. For extended sexiness, please make sure that your disclaimer points to MUSTBEPOP.NET. I spotted a few slip-ups in our new applications, and we'd really like to have everyone on the same, disclaimed page.

And finally, I'm going to end on a somewhat sombre note. Games like ours are, or are meant to be, a source of entertainment, and we draw involvement from people from all walks of life. For some, it's an outlet away from pain and a means of distraction and support during difficult times. We received the unfortunate news that one of our players, known for playing Adrien Brody ( brodyadrien) for quite some time, has passed away. Even if you didn't know him, please strive to be thankful for just one thing today. Be good, do good, and play nice, would you?

Dear MBP!
We didn't really think it was necessary to put this in the rules, but oh how corrected we stand!
So, dear MBP, just to clarify: YES! You need ONE journal PER character.
This means you CANNOT play the entire London Philharmonic Orchestra with one journal. Nor the entire cast of E.R. with all regular, recurring and one-time appearing actors. Nor the entire Canadian national ice hockey league including junior and little league.
Thank you very much. We love you for your creativity! =^)

If anyone is still cursing LiveJournal for that abysmally hideous profile layout they dumped on us a while ago, there's a way to have it revert back to the good old days but the userscript is only compatible with firefox. All you need to do is install Greasemonkey and after that's done you go here and click install. That's it. It's not 100% like the original but it's pretty damn close. The only thing you really have to lose is the option to see your v-gifts displayed at the top of the page.

A reminder to everyone: You need to update your disclaimer links to http://www.mustbepop.net. That includes your website on your profile and any other links on your posts and in your "Bio" section. The override codes have been re-done to reflect the website change and can be found HERE. Last week, everyone was given a reminder (thanks to those who helped - you're awesome!), but we still see some of you guys using the old website in various places. Please get them changed ASAP so no one gets in trouble with LJ Abuse. Thanks to everyone for dealing with the switch. We know it's a pain, but you can blame Geocities!

As you may have heard, Geocities.com is closing. The MBP disclaimer your journal website link points to is a Geocities-site, so please change your website link to http://www.mustbepop.net.
Also, if you are using an override code on S1 or have a link on your S2 entries, please change those to http://www.mustbepop.net as well. Or you can scrap those and lock all your entries except one that has a disclaimer. LJ Abuse suggests the following:
In creating this journal, the author has assumed another person's identity for the sole purpose of entertainment, without intending to obtain a benefit or to injure or defraud either the person whose identity the author has assumed, nor any reader of this content.
Thank you for acting quickly!
ETA: The updated disclaimer codes (with the right link) for S1 are now available here.

Arrr, greetin's, Must Be Pop, and welcome t' another admin update. Ye'll ne'er get me buried booty! As you may or may not know, today is officially Talk Like a Pirate Day, and as such, I'm going to bore you with another lecture about clones. But this time it'll be going through a pirate talk generator. Are you excited? I am.
Ahoy, in our newbie guide on the Must Be Pop site, we tell people that first thin''s first: make sure your celebrity is a'ailable. Sometimes they keep nearly dyin' off, and oh, how eager you be. But when you clone someone, chances be you're pointin' out that they're hoggin' the role, and then they realise thar's a threat and get acti'e. That kind o' blows your chances at gettin' the role, doesn't it? So a) be patient, or if tis' a mightily se'ar case, b) get in touch with the mod team. We'll try t' get in touch with the person t' see if they're intarsted in the role or not, and if that doesn't work, we'll explore other options. Clonin' is not the answer, gar!
...that almost seems like an Irish generator. Anyway!
