Welcome to Muslim America, an LJ community aimed at muslims living in the the "West" (with special regards to the US and Canada) with the purpose of discussing issues related to muslims and Islam in a non-Islamic environment. Issues such as culture and 'urf and enfranchisement (as well as disenfranchisement!), ethnicity, politics and society and how they relate to muslims in America are all open topics for discussion.
1. This is a discussion based community and is meant just for that: discussion. While respectful debating is allowed, argumentation is not.
2. Members are asked to consider the importance of ikhtilaf, and to remember that even if they do not personally accept another person's position on a matter. Members should take special care when talking about hotly debated matters (for example: photography or wearing western clothing or the mawlid). Keep in mind that if our greatest 'ulema can agree to disagree on these issues, then we should keep that in mind. Beware of making posts which put forth one opinion on a particular issue as if it is the only opinion, and "the" Islam. This is not a narrow deen. When a contentious issue comes up, members are asked to remember 'adab, and to consider the echoing affects of their words.
3. This community is open to muslims and non-muslims alike, though it is not meant as a place to debate the validity of Islam or Christianity or Judaism or any other faith and/or philosophy. Attacking of any such groups (with special consideration given to Judaism, Christianity and Islam) will not be tolerated. Discussions including other belief systems are allowed, especially when they are discussed in how they relate to Islam and muslims in America.
4. This is not a place to debate the Israelis/Palestinian issue. While our hearts go out to our brothers and sisters in Palestine and we, insha'allah, make du'a for them, those issues and their complexities are not the focus of this community. The same goes for Chechnya or any other place.
5. Mods have final say in disciplinary action of any member (such as banning). Mods do not, however, have anymore or any less say concerning the validity of one position or another simply because they are mods. The validity of a member or position is based on their merits in discussion.
6. In all things, practice 'adab.
7. Explicitly pronouncements of takfir will result in banning of the takfiri. Should a muslim utter something which is manifest kufr, it is acceptable and encouraged to point this out (with daleels if able). To explain, one may say, "To say that is kufr." One may not, however, reply with, for example, "How can you say that? You're a kafir!" Hate the kufr, not the person. Please consider that the knowledge and state of muslims in modern times necessitates special care in dealing with the vast number of opinions out there, and a muslim may have any number of reasons (valid or invalid) for saying what they say. In matters where one alludes that another is a kafir, it will be up to the mods to decide on the matter (such as asking for clarification). Should any one who alludes to or explicitly makes takfir of another and apologizes before disciplinary action is taken, it will be the judgment call of the mods to decide whether or not to ban. All such posts will be deleted. In short: do not make takfir.
8. Disparaging of any Prophet is categorically forbidden and will result in automatic banning regardless of whether or not one subsequently apologizes. This applies to issues where the disparagement is bold and/or explicit. If one merely alludes to any ill will of a Prophet or is simply practicing less than stellar 'adab , or they didn't realize the negative connotations of what they said, then the matter will be up to the judgment of the mods. This is to protect non-muslims who may be ignorant of the negative nature of what they are saying.
8b. Do not slander any of the Sahaba.
9. This is a discussion based, open minded community. Please refrain from having a black and white view of the world.
10. Posting of hateful material is not allowed. This includes articles/posts/comments in support of: terrorism, whether it be vigilante or state sponsored, suicide/martyrdom missions, reflecting hate of a particular group (such as jews), racism, etc.
11. Do not attack or seek out refutations of other groups, especially concerning the Salafis, Sufis, Wahhabis, etc. The Sufi vs. Salafi or Sufi vs. Wahhabi issues are extremely contentious, so please refrain from posting articles or posts or comments which blatantly support one position at the expense of another. Such posts may be deleted and the poster warned. Repeated violations may result in banning.
12. Proselytizing of any non-Islamic faith is disallowed and may result in being banned. Muslim groups will be defined as those who say the shahada and are not commonly known to ho ld explicit kufr beliefs. Groups considered muslim (for the purpose of this community) include, but are not limited to, the Sunnis (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali, Salafi, Wahhabi, Ash'ari, Maturidi, Athari) and Shi'a (in general). Groups rejecting the authenticity of the hadith or those groups which accept any Prophet after the Seal of the Prophets Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah (Peace and blessings be upon him) are not included in this definition. While they are welcome in the community, they may not proselytize their beliefs
13. This is not the place for polemics of one sect/community/movement over another. Please keep posts on topic (that is, about Muslims and Islam in America).
14. Since this is a discussion based community, please refrain from posting mere copy/paste articles unless you can relate them to the community and have something to discuss.
15. Make du'a for the mods and members of the community (this one is optional). :-)
16. The rules may be changed at any time with or without notice.
