My Little Teapot

Here is the handle...
Here is the handle…

And here is the spout!
And here is the spout! :)

I’m so excited! It’s only the second week of school and I’ve already created something in one of my classes that I’m not only proud of, but also dying to make more of. For Beginning Sculpture, just to get us thinking in 3-D, our teacher has assigned us to create something out of wire. He left it pretty open ended, resulting in a lot of very different ideas being developed in the classroom.

Unfortunately, our critique is on Tuesday and we will be moving on to the next project– concrete– promptly after that. I’ll just have to pick up some bailing wire and continue at my leisure. Looks like I’ve got a new hobby!

And to think, I wasn’t expecting to make anything I even wanted to keep in this class. Pshaw!

Ugh! [03 Sep 2008|08:34pm]

After wasting my whole afternoon desperately tinkering with histograms and color balances, trying so hard to make my digital photos look less... digital-- I finally give up! If it were up to me, I'd shoot film for the REST of my LIFE. But it's just not practical. Even if I bought a fancy pants negative scanner, it still wouldn't be worth it. Every time I took a picture I'd look back on it as money spent and precious space taken up by sleeves of negatives. Maybe if I didn't love food and clothing so much I could swing it.

So, to counteract my foul mood, I decided to join Kristina in a whirlwind grocery shopping excursion. As if I haven't spent enough money as a result of being stressed out or in a glum mood-- we went to three different stores in Eureka! Altogether, I spent a little over $90 in food. Daaaaamn.

I spent:

$11.26 at Natural Foods on: tomatoes, tangelos, basil, avocados, green beans, nectarines and a loaf of bread.

$34.06 at Costco on: Sabra Hummus, a case of vanilla soy milk, 2 loaves of garlic french bread and a box of Amy's Chili.

$46.11 at Winco on: refried beans, green chilies, whole wheat spaghetti, coconut milk, red bell peppers, tofu, couscous, Honey Bunches of Oats, feta cheese, bagels, chik'n patties, veggie bacon, Cheez-Its (we had to have our drive-home-to-Arcata snack), lime Jarritos (for me), Gatorade (for Chris), and salsa con queso (for me and Kristina :).

Phew! I'm BEAT.

ajdaklçjdkklw I LOVE this mood. Oh, Donna ♥. So... I'm downloading Lost in Austen right now because as I said, I'm running thin of things to watch some people at AustenBlog have said it's funny and light-hearted and ridiculous so why not hmmright. I need a bit of ridiculous in my life from time to time!

Which, in turn, leads me to complain about my modem-and-router, as it's being proper wanky. It won't let any of the computers under this threshold open its configuration page so I can do some port forwarding jiggery-pokery! Arrrr! Incur my (pirate-y) wrath! *bitchslaps it*

I can see the constellations now that you are gone.

Happy fasting to all who are. Sadly to say, I have had a nightmare about Hari Raya already. It shows how reluctant I am to celebrate the festivity but I am willing to accept the glorious food.

What a way to start of September. One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl, yesterday. Greek, about half hour ago. Slumming away in my bed during the holidays, barely touching my notes and assignments. Nothing's new there!

I think I will study Chemistry since there's a mock paper on Friday. It's either that or I sleep again.

Yup, it's another one of those.

So, I was browsing engrish.com and sharing some of my finds with TheSteve. I realized that I can see some of my friends wearing these shirts. Such as....

Even TheSteve said he'd wearthis shirt. Mostly because he says random shit like this all the time.

I can see [info]rehab69 in this trucker hat

[info]equus_albus would look quite dapper in this.

this made me think of [info]kauricat, because of the strange dreams she posts about.

[info]arwen_jade comes to mind with this wonderful prose.

don't be upset if you're not on this list. there's tons more shirts, and more time for me to sort through them.

I just spent $85 at Forever21. Earlier this month I spent $45 on a wallet, hat and two new tanks. Ummmm... Stress?! There are definitely two things I default to when I'm feeling overwhelmed: food and clothing.

Home Stretch [02 Sep 2008|10:58am]

Since it's my last semester at HSU, I decided to start shooting photos of all the buildings and rooms and spaces and people that I spend time / have spent time in / with. I wouldn't call it a 'series' so much as a 'collection.' I have no clue when I'm going to find time to process photos! I've shot a lot but only have a few up on my Flickr:

This Is Where I Have Lunch

Dorian Daneau

Allyson Riggs

We're into the second week of classes and things are going swimmingly, if not a bit on the exhausting side. Since I got my job in May at Hole in the Wallet I haven't been able to figure out just how the hell people handle going to school and working at the same time. I'm only working weekends, and I got trained to open the store-- no more closing shifts for me!-- so I'm doing the minimum amount of work shifts possible, and yet I'm still pooped at the end of every day. I don't know how some people do it.

My classes this semester are GREAT. I love every one of them, even the sculpture class I've been putting off for 5 whole years. Right now, we're working with wire and I'm having a lot of fun. It's very painful, though and I usually end up leaving 30 minutes early because my hands are covered in black oils and my fingertips are sore to the touch. I'm building a teapot and it really started coming together this morning-- I'll take photos of it this week!

My only other two studio classes are Intermediate Color Photography and Intermediate Drawing. The latter was intimidating me all summer 'cause I haven't taken a drawing course in 4+ years, but the teacher is wonderful and we're starting out with gestures and contours-- nothing too big.

Color Photo is great, if only because literally half the class is derived from last semester's Advanced Photo. Our first assignment is to be done on color slide film, though! That makes me so upset-- the only place to buy/process slide film is in Eureka, so I see some bus rides in my future. Blerg.

And lastly, I have Contemporary Art & Theory, which is my only class on MWF. What a relief. Kristina, Eden and Jeff are all in this class with me so I've got a good base of study buddies if it comes to that. I don't think it will be a problem-- the new art historian is teaching it and I already love her! She has the perfect art historian personality and is really good about catering to the different levels of aptitude.

All in all, I think this is going to be a GREAT last semester!

Here is the scene. I am packing non-essentials in Gavin's room. Gavin is playing with whatever he can get his hands on, jibbering away in Ewok.

G: *excited discovery noise*
M: What did you just find?
G: *silence*
M: Gavin? *turn around and jaw drops in horror* GAVIN!!
G: *his trademark 'I'm cute and you love me' noise as he's pulling apart two of my very carefully wound balls of yarn, flinging it all over the room*

Gavin then spends the next half hour in his crib, playing with stuffed animals, as I mumble and grumble, deknotting and rewinding said balls of yarn. The entire time, he's doing cute things, and reaching for me. I'm muttering phrases such as "gypsies" and "highest bidder".

Of course not long afterwards, after banishment to the crib is over, he comes up to me, grabs my hand and kisses the back of it several times. Talk of gypsies and highest bid are over.

Just a quick note that I’m back safe, if not entirely sound. I’m exhausted, bruised, and have more sore muscles than I’ve had in a very long time, but it was a productive trip. I’ll post more later, after I’ve recovered a bit more;)

Now that the Beeb has released more information about their autumn programmes, I'm more than a little bit excited for them. Little Dorrit (I've heard 'tis great)! Einsten & Eddington! But particularly, Spooks! If we can't have Richard Armitage in Robin Hood in the coming months, I say we can have him in Spooks indeed! (Though I can't believe they're also doing this, OH DEAR.)

feminism [02 Sep 2008|07:18am]

simply_mae
In describing the ills of post-war American policy in the Philippines, specifically the granting of parity rights in the "use" of our resources, in exchange for which financial aid was given, Agoncillo used a metaphor. Said he, "The United States, then, played the role of a man who, having been aided by a friend who lost everything in defense of the former, now brashly demanded that he be given the right to live with his friend's wife in exchange for his financial help." I could have applauded his use of metaphor because rarely are literary devices used in history books. However, his metaphor is problematic. The 'wife' metaphor parallels Philippine resources, something that the man owns. Some may opine that Agoncillo is merely driving at the point that the friend is robbing something the man cherishes. If that be the case, I argue that another metaphor could have been used in its stead. Say, the friend demanded that he donate an organ. That would be a more impactful substitute, don't you think?

So passionate am I about this issue that my cramped schedule is no excuse to let this off.
