buy @ yesasiaThese guys were originally known as
iM, I loved their song
“Be My 1004” and was glad to see them back, under the new name
Happyface.
“Be Happy” is their first mini-album under the new name.
The
Intro is a short 48-second affair that sounds like it’s being played on a radio, fading out into
보여. It’s a dark song that blends rock, pop and electronica. I absolutely love it - it’s moody and angst-y. A determined, powerful song. I love the synths and percussion.
Break Up is a unique and stunning rock ballad. What I noticed first about this song was the soft synths in the background of the opening - they’re uneven and slightly off-balance, and caught my attention right away. They’re consistent throughout the song, evening out a bit as it builds, with the melody also transferred to piano in the first verse. The harmonies are lovely.
잘가 is a little more toned down, taking an R&B route rather than following the rock-influenced pattern in the first two tracks. I love the a cappella opening. Although it’s not my favourite track, it’s definitely strong. Their clear, heartfelt vocals and layered harmonies really boost this otherwise formulaic song up.
Be My 1004 Part II is a track that I was really looking forward to, since I loved the original song. It’s essentially a toned-up, fresh version of the original - although it links back to the original clearly, it also has its own individuality. The tempo is bumped up a little, and the whole song has a smooth, confident nature.
Overall, a fantastic mini-album. A fresh and distinct blend of genres and styles, perfetly executed. The only thing that disappoints me about them is how sparse their releases have been so far - basically one single as iM and this mini-album. Highly recommended.
