Deerfield Fellowship
Hey everyone,

I'm a senior and a history major at Grinnell College in Iowa, and I was recently accepted to the Deerfield Fellowship for this summer! I'm really excited about the program, and so I was wondering if anyone had personal stories and experiences they'd be willing to share with me. I've tried searching for it through Google but with little luck.

Thanks for your time!

Thanks for the advice! What is Wheatly Diner? And how can I find this pond?

Yay! I was a Deerfield Fellow in 2006. I was asked to be assistant tutor this year, but I'll be there in 2009, instead, so unfortunately I won't get to meet you. Congratulations, it is a very competitive application process.

You will have an incredible experience. You will meet tons of people who will help shape your future career in museums and get a world class education free of charge. You will have the most amazing classes everyday and one field trip a week, until the last week which is a week long trip to various museums. The only thing I would beware of is the glut of fatty New England cooking you are provided with, we all gained 10-15 pounds. Also, I didn't find the bugs all that bad, but I live in the Mississippi River Valley amongst a constant swarm of mosquitoes. Most of the other fellows were from cities/suburbs and found them unbearable.

Feel free to email (allisonbalch@yahoo.com) or facebook (Allison Balch, SIU Alum) me. I'd be happy to answer any more specific questions. Also, I have pictures on my facebook page of some of the things we did.

Thank you for your comment! It's nice to hear that the program is really as great and incredible as I'm imagining it to be.

Although, I'm curious what you mean by "glut of fatty New England cooking" since I grew up in Connecticut and I've found New England food to be much, much healthier than Midwestern. Will I have time to exercise?

I'm going to add you on Facebook right now so I can check out those pictures!

No offense on the food front. My mom is from Kentucky so I don't think I ate anything that wasn't fried or covered in gravy until my 13th birthday. However, the caterer, Elm Farm, certainly hearkens back to the heavy cream, pork fat laden New England Colonial Days of Yore. The guy's really nice and will make anything you want. The problem is that it is very good. I even took pictures of some of the cakes that came with every meal.

You will have time to exercise if you don't take all your studying too seriously. Deerfield is surrounded by commercial flower growers and its nice to walk down the lanes between their fileds or up to Mount Eagle Brook after the day's studies. I always devoted Sunday to walking around the town, talking to people, and visiting the river. Oh, whatever you do, be sure to bring a bicycle!
