7:28 pm - Acropolis Museum in Athens

ann_les

It is one of the highest-profile cultural projects undertaken in Europe in this decade.

Here you can see the photos. To my mind, the interior could be done better. I mean less modern columns, more conventionalized smooth forms.

11:07 am - Fun Quiz

spottheskulls

Hello

I'm thinking of setting up a weekly identification quiz where I post various animal related objects e.g. skulls, bones etc for other people to guess what they are.

The first week is already up so come and have a go and let me know what you think.

8:17 pm - Random query...

miss_squiddy
Sorry for the cross post everyone :(
I need some help and don't know who to ask!

I need to find a horse skull for a handling collection. I can shop online but I'm UK based and would prefer to avoid international shipping.

Can anyone suggest a supplier? I normally do dressing up and crime and punishment so this isn't really my bag - I've Googled but the only one I've found is really expensive...

9:02 pm - Looking for an exhibit

liadan_m
I remember a news story not too long ago about the Lost Treasures of Iraqi art exhibit traveling in the US, and yet, Google is not telling me where and when. Like most museum geeks, there are some things I'll hop in the car and travel for - this happens to be one of them. I have time this break. Surely someone remembers or knows where this is at the moment?

3:51 pm - Museum worker of the Archaeological Museum of Dion ‘sold artifacts’

expertmus

An official at an archaeological museum and another person were detained in Thessaloniki yesterday on suspicion of illegally trading in hundreds of rare antiquities.

The 41-year-old chief suspect and a 44-year-old believed to be his accomplice were caught on Monday by undercover officers posing as interested buyers. The suspects are alleged to have been offering a collection of some 200 artifacts from the medieval and ancient eras for 400,000 euros. The items included bronze and silver jewelry and clothing ornaments, two marble heads and dozens of coins.

A search of the homes of the two suspects also unearthed several stamps from prefectural and tax authorities.

The 41-year-old, who is believed to have tried to make several other artifact sales over the past few months, was a full-time employee of the Archaeological Museum of Dion, near an important ancient Macedonian sanctuary in Pieria, according to Agence France-Presse.

9:27 am - Cleveland Museum of Art

liadan_m
There is a strong possibility that I'm going to be in Cleveland in two or three weeks, and if I am there, I need to do about two hours of research on a specific Jacobean textile at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Does anyone know who the proper curator to contact about this is?

9:51 am - Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who had such great ideas for the Prohibition artifacts. I am doing an exhibit on local breweries, so there is not much about beer at the time, but I am going to show how that industry faded and how home-made replaced it as well as "needle beer." Another thesis I ran into was that Prohibition was the death of the masculine saloon and the rise of women drinking in public (speakeasies and such, but still very different than the Victorian concept of women drinking). It has been a really great exhibit to work on.
Thanks again!

Just thought I'd say a quick hello as I've just joined this community. Having worked in museums for 12 years, most of those in an industrial museum, I'm currently job hunting following redundancy.

Good evening all,
My name is Lumpy, I am a typical museum geek… spent most of my life shacked up in some museum or another both back in London and now in my present life at Bristol… I spent most of my free time in the natural history museums or the science museums… the only gripe I have with most of these are their constant construction of certain areas meaning every visit things are either missing or moved or some-such… otherwise I adore these places!

I found this community the other day and thought I would gather the courage to join :)

Thank you everyone for your feedback about my Lysol debate! It was interesting that no one brought up the affect it would have on the air, which was actually my major concern. These days aerosols are so different that it is probably not an issue anymore.
I am going to go ahead and use it at closing and do not worry, I will not attack any artifacts with it...well maybe that one that keeps falling...

Any thoughts on using Lysol in a museum? We have a lot of children's activity areas that we have been wiping down, but it takes forever. Some people worried about spraying Lysol inside the exhibit area. Oh, its a history museum with every sort of artifact you can think of.

7:26 pm - Concern

sunflower_bloom
Hi. I'm been working at a government funded (as in it's a county museum) museum for almost 2 years now. In July of 2007 I was supposed to get evaluated and gotten a pay raise. It never happened until January 7th of this year because my boss forgot about it. I was told I would be retro paid from July. It is now April and I still haven't gotten my raise. Is this normal? In fact, I just found out I would not be retropaid either. I am on the verge of tears because now I feel very hateful towards the museum. I want to quit my job because of the principal that this money was promised to me. I feel I can no longer work for an instutution where I put more than 50 hours a week with part time jobs because it is apparent that they show no concerns or sympathy for their employees. I went to the director and the person below him to ask for help with the situation but as they walk and have lunches with politicians and talk about their great vacation getaways/ and hiding from their work, I noticed that I would not get help there.

Is this going on everywhere else? Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on how I can come out on top without hating the museum forever?

One employee was there when I got the news about no raise/retro pay and commented that I should just hang in there and that the amount of the raise wasn't even significant so why make a fuss about it.

current mood: pissed off

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the community so I thought I would post a brief introduction along with a few questions I have about an assignment I am working on. I just finished my first year in the Masters of Museum Studies program at the University of Toronto, and my main area of interest is collections management.

I am currently writing a research paper on the display of human remains in museums. The paper is pretty much complete, so don't worry, I'm not asking you to finish my assignment for me! As part of our assignment, our professor has asked students to complete a project that records our attempts to make contact and hopefully hold discussions with individuals all over the world about our essay topics.

I would love to hear everyone's opinions on exhibits featuring human remains in museums. In particular, I am interested in what attracts people to these displays. As well, I am doing a bit of an investigation into how these displays compare to the display of the human body in freak shows/carnivals/circuses - the mode of display may be different, but were/are people attracted to the human body in freak shows for the same reasons that they are attracted to bodies in museums? Any thoughts on that topic would also be appreciated.

FYI, some examples I am using in my essay are mummies and the Bodyworlds exhibit.

Thanks in advance! If you respond, please include your country in your entry, as I have to document the location of the people I am contacting.

Quoting K. Hudson's "Directory of museums and living displays" (1985):

State museum

  • In Germany "State museum" is a relic of the former kingdoms which were eventually united to form the German Reich (Prussia, Bavaria).

  • A "State museum" in France would mean a nationally financed and controlled museum.

Provincial museum

  • A "Provincial museum" in Spain or Romania is an important institution, the spearhead of museum activity in a province.

  • A "Provincial museum" in England is no more than a museum in the provinces.

Is any of these states true for the places you live in?

Thanks a lot in advance. The information will serve for my thesis.

1:29 pm - La Specola Anatomical Waxworks & Body Horror

wieselkind
An interesting Article my tutor found and sent me connecting the Anatomical Waxworks at La Specola to the horror film tradition.

"Surprising origins
Florentine 18th-century wax anatomical models as inspiration for Italian horror

Drawing from feminist-oriented psychoanalytic theories of the horror film as well as the socio-cultural analysis of horror myths, Annette Burfoot reveals the extent to which 18th-century life-size wax models of the female body in various states of dissection—still on display in a Florentine museum, La Specola—"provides the basis for various principles of horror.""
