There was just too much of it. Way too much. And he didn’t know what to do with it. It covered his hands, covered his shirt. Covered everything around him. In his arms laid a prone figure, one that he believed would never die. Would last forever. But he’d kidded himself. Made himself believe that Jesse Kilmartin couldn’t die. That because of him being able to phase in and out he’d be able to go through or last through everything. How very wrong he was.

Standing up he picked up his best friend and headed back to Sanctuary. Headed back to the place that they called home. First person to greet him was Shalimar. The feral of their clan. Jesse had been like a little brother to her. And now that little brother was gone. He could see the anger in her eyes as she watched him. Almost as if she was blaming him for what happened to the molecular. But it wasn’t his fault… it wasn’t.

“Brennan? Brennan?!” Adam tried again and again to get the elemental’s attention but it wasn’t working. The 6’4” tall man was holding Jesse’s body to him, cradling him like you would a small child and that’s when he noticed it. Noticed that Brennan’s clothes were soaked in blood. The blood even streaked the elemental’s hair from where he’d more than likely ran his fingers through it.

“He’s dead Adam. Jesse’s dead. He’s…” Brennan couldn’t keep saying that. Jesse had been his whole life. His lover was dead. Now he stood there covered in the molecular’s blood.

“What did you do to him Brennan?!” Shalimar demanded anger filling her voice to where it sounded like she was growling.

“I didn’t do it… Eckhart did it. The GSA did it. They shot Jesse.” After seeing the look on their faces, he shook his head. “The bullet went right through. Must be some new prototype.” Looking at the two one last time he turned on his heels and went out to the other side of Storm King Mountain, the other side of Sanctuary and buried his boyfriend.

Placing his hand on the headstone that he’d made himself it left a bloody handprint. A red mark that would be there on that gravestone as a reminder that Brennan Mulwray couldn’t save the one man he loved.
