About:

Once Upon a Time is an open community for posting any stories, poetry or art based on a fairy tale, folklore, fable, myth or legend of any culture around the world. In addition to posting new stories/poetry/artwork, you may also post links to your older stories/poetry/artwork. All fandoms are welcome, and original works are welcome too. If you are concerned about plagiarism, you may f-lock the post(s) to your original works. (I will set up a friending system when we have enough members interested in posting their original works.)

Any fairy tale, folklore, fable, myth or legend of any culture around the world qualifies for this community. Fictional fairy tales, folklores, fables, myths and legends are also eligible. (An example is the story of Beren and Tinuviel from J.R.R. Tolkien's Silmarillion). The rule of thumb is, if it's at least a century old, it qualifies. Please do not base your works on a work that is in turn based on fairy tale, folklore, fable, myth or legend. Disney is out (Unless if it's a parody, like Shrek).

From time to time, the moderator (

lilian_cho) will post sign-ups/challenges. Both members and non-members may post fiction or art other than sign-up/challenge responses at any time, as long as it fits the community guidelines. If you have any suggestions for sign-ups/challenges, please feel free to do so.

Here are the seven community guidelines:

2) All works of all genre (except for PWP) and ratings are allowed.

- No gratuitous sex (PWP) or violence please. Please use sex and/or violence as a literary element (e.g.

blythely's works) or as a plot device (e.g. Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye).

- Any cursing has to be cultural specific (e.g. "bloody" for British, "fuck" for Americans). Having curses every other sentence will only serve to annoy your reader (Read Tim O'Brien "The Things They Carried" for some effective use of cursing). Be careful when using RL derogatory terms: make sure that readers understand that it is the character(s) and NOT you that are saying/thinking those terms.

- Mary Sue, Gary Stu and gender-bender are only allowed in parodies. Crossdressings are allowed, since it is a RL practice. Compliant to HBP, Blaise Zabini is a beautiful male of African descent. You may resort to polyjuice/alchemical transmutation/possession by spirits/virtual reality/etc., but not if sex is the sole purpose of your fanfic. Two males and two females can and do have sex without having to transform one partner into another gender.

- OoC-ness is only allowed in crossovers, fusions and parodies. OCs in fanfictions are only allowed as side characters. Canon character/OC pairing is only allowed as a side pairing.
If you are writing in a fandom that has a gazillion characters (e.g. Naruto, Prince of Tennis), and yet you create an OC as the protagonist's primary love interest, you will receive an e-mail from the mod rejecting your post and ranting about the sorry state of your fandom.

- All clichés must be intentional.

- Any grammar and/or spelling mistakes must be intentional. CAPSLOCK is only allowed in CAPSLOCK!Harry parodies. Use italics and bold tags instead for emphasis.

- Spehshul Sparklypoo font is banned here. Offenders will be asked to form a sparklypoo community.

3) All works posted must be based, however loosely, on a fairy tale, folklore, fable, myth or legend.

4) Every work must be posted behind an lj-cut, with a header containing the following information:

When answering

mukashi2-specific challenges, please post your text in its entirety under LJ-cut in this community.

For non-challenge posts, you may link to another LJ or Web site. Please do not link to an f-locked post or a password-protected Web site--except if it's a ridiculously famous Web site like Potter Slash Archive and Restricted Section. However, you may f-lock your work if you post it directly here.

Your post will then go through a moderation queue. If one week has passed and you still have not received an e-mail, go ahead and nudge the mod at

5) Please be responsible and only view the works that you can handle.
If I find minors abusing this trust system, I will f-lock all R and NC-17 posts. However, I have no problem with minors posting R and NC-17 works. (It's a stupid double standard, I know. But Haley Joel Osment was not allowed to watch The Sixth Sense and A.I., so...)

6) The moderator reserves the right to delete trollings and/or wanks.
Trolling is NOT the same with being a devil's advocate.
Please be mature and keep an open mind. If you find a particular post and/or comment offensive, simply ignore it.

7) Plugging other LJ communities are fine, as long as it has similar interests with Once Upon a Time.
