Sheena liked her photos. I ended up zipping them in two folders and sending them through you send it.

I'm woefully behind on sorting and editing photos. I thought I might do some work this weekend, but between working on my submission and other things, I didn't really have the time. This weekend looks like it may be a bit busy as well. DL's having a party on Friday night and I have a pottery painting date with Elizabeth Friday as well. I need to call DL to see what time he's planning on having people over and to let him know we won't likely be there until about 8:30.

I think amazon is punishing me for using the free shipping. Unless they are lying to me, my stuff has just been sitting in Memphis since Thursday and Friday. Memphis is about 2 and a half hours away from here. This is being shipped USPS. There is no (good) reason for it to take this long. I'm really looking forward to getting these things out there. Nothing will get published just sitting on my hard drive. Yes more of the same. That's all I ever have.

3D character commissions? [06 Oct 2008|05:53pm]

anjel_kitty
[ mood | curious ]

So I'm sending out an query here: My friend [info]schnitzalted is a 3D artist and he wants to make some extra money plying his skills. Unfortunately there seems to be less of a market for the stuff he has been modeling, mainly science stuff. So we were joking around about him taking furry commissions, since he seemed interested in the fact I've made a pretty good supplementary income with my work.

So I'm curious if anyone here knows anyone out there who does 3D commissions, and beyond just furry stuff because he can do just about anything (models for people, creatures, RPGs and the like)

So does anyone know of where he could get some business for his type of art? If you are curious to see some just check his journal.

The Gay Stuff [06 Oct 2008|04:50pm]

I have now tagged all my 2008 entries. Yay for me. This tagging business is compulsive, and I'd eventually like to have the whole journal tagged, but I wonder if someone on my friends list would be willing to do the entries from September/October '05. I find those almost impossible to look back at.

Speaking of looking back, when I visit my Amazon page, I usually only check out the new reviews of my more recent books, but today -- perhaps because of Kody Boyle's nice comment about Drawing Blood on my most recent Amazon blog entry -- I wondered what people had been saying about my older stuff lately, so I checked out the most recent of the 228 Lost Souls reviews. Most of them were good, but I found this gem (excerpted) from "Otto" of San Antonio, Texas:

I support gay rights, gay marriage, etc, but I can do without details that paint a picture in my mind, or actually seeing it happen. If someone told me Poppy Z Brite wrote a book and the gay stuff isn't in it, I'd be interested in reading it. Otherwise, I doubt I'll pick up another book of hers.

In other words, "I'll say what I have to say to be PC, but I don't want to know what those icky fags actually do with each other." I can only hope someone told him Exquisite Corpse wasn't a bit gay.

ChaCha! [06 Oct 2008|11:03am]

I have been looking for other ways to make money while still being a stay at home mom. It will take a while to really get my name out there for my photography. A few days ago I found a company called ChaCha. I had never heard of them before. I did some research first to make sure they where legit. Turns out they have been on many shows and in articles about how great they are.

How it works is people call or text ChaCha with questions they have about anything. It is free for them to do so. I get paid to answer their question they receive via text. I have been having so much fun doing this! Sometimes it can be pretty hard if I can not find an answer. The first day I was really slow at getting the answers. But now I am getting faster and faster. On average someone can make about $9/hour once they get the hang of finding the answers. I know it is not much...but it will be a way for me to help pay off our dept and to also sock some money away.

Like I need another hole in my head.. [06 Oct 2008|12:39am]

spyderzero
[ music | "Our Truth" - Lacuna Coil ]

I'm highly considering getting my eyebrow re-pierced. I really miss it, and getting my ear done was more of an encouragement than a deterrent. All I really would need to do is order a bioplast stopper to put in instantaneously, and let it heal with that in, so work doesn't get pissy. Once it's properly healed, I could put the actual ring in. I don't know why I do this. Really, I know that in ten years this won't matter, and neither will be in my head anymore. Eh. It's fun anyhow.

I'm currently in the process of dodging Lisa. She's in the process of being removed from her place, and she keeps asking me for rides and so forth. This is going to lead to her asking to stay at my house for awhile. I guess the right thing to do would be to say Okay, but I just can't bring myself to do it. Something about being 24 and having a 46 year old living with you...I dunno. I think it's just overall it'd bother me. I've written about her a million times, so I don't need to go into detail. Needless to say, she's pressuring me. "I need a ride, I know you're at work but hopefully tomorrow you can do it. If not then I guess I'll just try to find someone else to help me find somewhere to live." Ugh. Seriously, I know you're supposed to take care of family, but I just don't think that I should be trying to find housing and so forth for her. She's a grown woman. Anyhow...

Capcom's developing a CGI Resident Evil movie that actually follows the RE storyline. Bitchin'! Resident Evil Degeneration's going to be sick.

I guess I need to go to bed now. Smoothies are an awesome breakfast, and I wanna go get one before work tomorrow. I'm most likely going to be bored, since it's a Monday, so if you get a random text, don't be surprised.

Sheena and Phonso [05 Oct 2008|10:41pm]

alicdeni83

Sheena asked me on Friday if I'd have some time this weekend to take some photos of her and Phonso. It's been two years pretty much since I took that set of them that comprises 99% of the photos they have together, so I understand her wanting some new ones. We didn't spend as much time as we did with the other shoot though I like to think I'm better now than I was two years ago. I think they have some better quality photos this time. My camera doesn't hurt either. Pretty colors. We started at about 10 and shot for about 30 minutes.

New Look & Good News [05 Oct 2008|09:57pm]

docbrite
Yes, well, when I found out Livejournal had not only a tiki theme but a purple tiki theme, what else could I do? I've also started using tags, which appeal to the part of my nature that enjoys alphabetizing, making lists, and such. So far I've tagged my entries back through June of this year. Eventually I'd like to do as many as possible, but given that I've been keeping this journal for five years (!), it's going to be a big task. I've set it up (I hope) so that people on my friends list can add the tags I've already created to my entries, so if any of y'all feel like helping with this, I will be most appreciative.

We recently had a piece of very good news, which I didn't want to mention until it was finalized (money --> bank). Back in 2000, when we lived on Napoleon Avenue, the Army Corps of Engineers and the New Orleans Sewer & Water Board began a huge construction project along several blocks of the street, including ours. They basically removed the neutral ground (the median to non-New Orleanians) and dug two huge canals underneath the street, each big enough to drive a city bus through, which were meant to improve the notoriously poor drainage in Broadmoor. Unfortunately, as well as making everyone's life a hell of filth, ugliness, and insanely loud noise that often started as early as 5:45 AM, the construction severely damaged most of the beautiful old (mostly circa 1920-1930) homes in the neighborhood. Our foundation collapsed and our house developed several large cracks in the interior and exterior walls as well as a couple of major roof leaks. Another family's house actually split in two, rendering it uninhabitable. I wrote Liquor during this chaos, working late at night and grabbing moments of silence wherever I could find them. By the time the construction ended in 2004, most of us in the neighborhood were involved in a group lawsuit against the Corps and the S&WB. Not a class-action lawsuit, but along those lines. I never expected to see a penny from it, especially after the federal levees (you know, the ones built by that same Corps) failed, but the suit was recently settled, and last week we received a very nice sum. Not hundreds of thousands or anything, but enough so that we won't have to worry for a while, enough so that we can take our twentieth-anniversary trip next year, and (most important at the moment) enough so that Chris can wait a bit longer for a good job opportunity to come along instead of taking a job just to bring in money. He is restless and misses cooking and his customers, but there has been a dearth of decent chef jobs recently. (He's already had two offers; unfortunately, one was in Lafayette -- three hours away -- and one just looked like a worse fit the more we thought and talked about it.)

We owe a vast debt of thanks to Linda Harang (isn't that an excellent name for a lawyer?) and her associates at the Murray Law Firm; they certainly earned their big slice of the pie.

So that's where we are now, and it seems like a pretty good place to be. I know that some people who read this journal are kind enough to worry about us, so I just wanted to let folks know that -- financially, at least -- we will be OK for a while. Thanks for caring.

God & Science..read this. [05 Oct 2008|06:03pm]

poeticstrife
'Let me explain the problem science has with religion.' The atheist professor of philosophy pauses before his class and then asks one of
his new students to stand.

'You're a Christian, aren't you, son?'

'Yes sir,' the student says.

'So you believe in God?'

'Absolutely.'

'Is God good?'

'Sure! God's good.'

'Is God all-powerful? Can God do anything?'

'Yes.'

'Are you good or evil?'

'The Bible says I'm evil.'

The professor grins knowingly. 'Aha! The Bible!' He considers for a moment. 'Here's one for you. Let's say there's a sick person over here
and you can cure him. You can do it. Would you help him? Would you try?'

'Yes sir, I would.'

'So you're good...!'

'I wouldn't say that.'

'But why not say that? You'd help a sick and maimed person if you could.
Most of us would if we could. But God doesn't.'

The student does not answer, so the professor continues. 'He doesn't, does
he? My brother was a Christian who died of cancer, even though he prayed
to Jesus to heal him. How is this Jesus good? Hmmm? Can you answer that
one?'

The student remains silent.

'No, you can't, can you?' the professor says. He takes a sip of water from a glass
on his desk to give the student time to relax.

'Let's start again, young fella. Is God good?'

'Er...yes,' the student says.

'Is Satan good?'

The student doesn't hesitate on this one. 'No.'

'Then where does Satan come from?'

The student falters. 'From God'

'That's right. God made Satan, didn't he? Tell me, son. Is there evil in
this world?'

'Yes, sir.'

'Evil's everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything, correct?'

'Yes.'

'So who created evil?' The professor continued, 'If God created everything,
then God created evil, since evil exists, and according to
the principle that our works define who we are, then God is evil.'

Again, the student has no answer. 'Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred?
Ugliness? All these terrible things, do they exist in this world?'

The student squirms on his feet. 'Yes.'

'So who created them?'

The student does not answer again, so the professor repeats his question.
'Who created them?' There is still no answer. Suddenly the lecturer breaks
away to pace in front of the classroom. The class is mesmerized. 'Tell me,'
he continues onto another student. 'Do you believe in Jesus Christ, son?'

The student's voice betrays him and cracks. 'Yes, professor, I do.'

The old man stops pacing. 'Science says you have five senses you use to identify
and observe the world around you. Have you ever seen Jesus?'

'No sir. I've never seen Him.'

'Then tell us if you've ever heard your Jesus?'

'No, sir, I have not.'

'Have you ever felt your Jesus, tasted your Jesus or smelt your Jesus?

Have you ever had any sensory perception of Jesus Christ, or God for that matter?'

'No, sir, I'm afraid I haven't.'

'Yet you still believe in him?'

'Yes.'

'According to the rules of empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science
says your God doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?'

'Nothing,' the student replies. 'I only have my faith.'

'Yes, faith,' the professor repeats. 'And that is the problem sciencehas
with God. There is no evidence, only faith.'

The student stands quietly for a moment, before asking a question of His
own. 'Professor, is there such thing as heat?'

'Yes,' the professor replies. 'There's heat.'

'And is there such a thing as cold?'

'Yes, son, there's cold too.'

'No sir, there isn't.'

The professor turns to face the student, obviously interested. The room
suddenly becomes very quiet. The student begins to explain. 'You can
have lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat, mega-heat, unlimited heat,
white heat, a little heat or no heat, but we don't have anything called 'cold'.
We can hit up to 458 degrees below zero, which is no heat, but we can't go
any further after that. There is no such thing as cold; otherwise we would
be able to go colder than the lowest -458 degrees.'

'Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits
energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy.
Absolute zero (-458 F) is the total absence of heat. You see, sir, cold is
only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure
cold. Heat we can measure in thermal units because heat is energy. Cold is
not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.'

Silence across the room. A pen drops somewhere in the classroom, sounding
like a hammer.

'What about darkness, professor. Is there such a thing as darkness?'

'Yes,' the professor replies without hesitation. 'What is night if it isn't darkness?'

'You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is not something; it is the absence of
something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing
light, but if you have no light constantly you have nothing and it's
called darkness, isn't it? That's the meaning we use to define the word.'

'In reality, darkness isn't. If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?'

The professor begins to smile at the student in front of him. This will be
a good semester. 'So what point are you making, young man?'

'Yes, professor. My point is, your philosophical premise is flawed to
start with, and so your conclusion must also be flawed.'

The professor's face cannot hide his surprise this time. 'Flawed? Can you
explain how?'

'You are working on the premise of duality,' the student explains. 'You
argue that there is life and then there's death; a good God and a bad God.
You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can
measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought.'

'It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully
understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be

ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing.
Death is not the opposite of life, just the absence of it.'

'Now tell me, professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved
from a monkey?'

'If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, young man, yes,
of course I do.'

'Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?'

The professor begins to shake his head, still smiling, as he realizes
where the argument is going. A very good semester, indeed.

'Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and
cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not
teaching your opinion, sir? Are you now not a scientist, but a preacher?'

The class is in uproar. The student remains silent until the commotion
has subsided.

'To continue the point you were making earlier to the other student, let
me give you an example of what I mean.'

The student looks around the room. 'Is there anyone in the class whohas
ever seen the professor's brain?' The class breaks out into laughter.

'Is there anyone here who has ever heard the professor's brain, felt the
professor's brain, touched or smelt the professor's brain? No one appears
to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical,
stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, with
all due respect, sir.'

'So if science says you have no brain, how can we trust your lectures,
sir?'

Now the room is silent. The professor just stares at the student, his face
unreadable.

Finally, after what seems an eternity, the old man answers. 'I guess
you'll have to take them on faith.'

'Now, you accept that there is faith, and, in fact, faith exists with
life,' the student continues. 'Now, sir, is there such a thing as
evil?'

Now uncertain, the professor responds, 'Of course, there is. We see it
everyday. It is in the daily example of man's inhumanity to man. It is in
the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These
manifestations are nothing else but evil.'

To this the student replied, 'Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does
not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like
darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence
of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when
man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that
comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no
light.'

[ music | cajun show on wwoz ]

so i did the freret market yesterday. it was a gorgeous day, not too hot, nice breeze, and i got primo placement on freret near cadiz, in front of this giant building that blocked the sun for the greater portion of the day. (which is always nice for my record clocks, so i don't have to stress about them melting/warping.) we were close to food, beer, and port-o-lets, which is always nice.

fae came with me, which was wonderful. it's always more fun, less stressful, and just generally easier when she comes, though i know she often has much better things to do with her time... so i really appreciate it when she does. we showed up for around 9:15 and got unloaded, parked the car in the lot, and were all set up and ready to sell by about 10:30, which was kinda early considering the market wasn't really supposed to start til noon, but really, there were people browsing the second the tent went up and any of my stuff was out. so it was nice to not be rushed and be set up on time, for once. (i'm usually running late and still setting up a half hour or hour into markets, traditionally, when i'm doing it all by myself.)

there were tons of people at the market and it was festive, what with the nice weather, music, food and beer, barking dogs (pet adoptions), and all. sales started off pretty ok, but slowed through the afternoon. in the end, i didn't end up selling as much as i had last week at the broad street bazaar, which surprised me. i thought i would do better, since it was a bigger event. i got close, but not quite as much - plus fae and i both ate more at freret, cuz there was so much yummy food (love those crepes a la cart folks! banana and nutella crepes, yum!). so we ate some of my profits. but i can't complain, i guess. i did still sell a few things and got lots of compliments on the clocks and shirt designs. and we had a pretty fun afternoon, enjoying the outdoors and seeing folks.

by the end, though, i was really exhausted. fae had brought some beers back with her after running home quickly in the middle of the day, so i'd drunk one mid-afternoon, which was very satisfying in the moment but since i didn't keep drinking, ended up just making me really sleepy. so after breaking down and loading it all back into and then out of the car, at home, i was blasted.

i did somehow remember to go vote. can i just say... NOTHING makes me feel like i'm home more than going to vote at my local precinct., which is the school on canal between olympia and st. patrick. with george (jenny's landlord) working the polls, other poll workers i don't really know remembering me, and other neighbors in the neighborhood walking in at the same time as me... i was just really having a "cheers" moment. and, i'm glad i went, cuz i got to fill out an "affirmation" of my address, which i had to do in order to vote. i wonder if that's because i've filled out a few voter registration things since i got here w/my new address, but the official change of address via the DMV hasn't gone through yet. regardless, they didn't keep me from voting - i just had to sign something with my new address and show them my new license. so i should be all set for the november election.

we stayed up watching weeds and then some election returns, and eventually went to bed around 10:30 or so. i was SO friggin tired - all i wanted to do was sleep. but NO... kittens had other plans for us. for the first time, really, they came voluntarily into the bed and started playing, all over us. pretty much all night. i was getting so annoyed with them but somehow fell asleep, only to be awakened at 3am to horrible digestive distress. and i think me getting up then woke the kittens, cuz when i finally did come back to the bed, they were back, crawling all over us and pouncing, playing. which was cute in some ways, but got very tiresome after a while, cuz i just wanted to go back to sleep.

fae finally tossed them out of the room at 6am this morning, and we slept in til 8:30, almost 9, which is really late for us. but i woke up feeling like i hadn't slept at all, still exhausted, possibly more than when i went to bed last night. and i've been dragging all day.

ok, i'm signing out for now... too tired to keep typing.
