Will require a login. If you already have a Google account (i.e. Gmail), then you're good to go. Otherwise, you have to sign up for one.
Will have the speed of basically 1Mbs, and is primarily for "outside the house" use for max results. Otherwise, you need to get a CPE for your house (more in that in a minute....)
GoogleWifi is also installed throughout the MV Library and Bookmobile.
The wireless system consists of about 350 radios in MV on lamposts...so no, those are not aliens.
3 "aggregation" points: Google, 444 Castro St & St. Francis Football Field
When you log in, there is a Google Wifi landing page that you can configure. This is a pretty cool feature. You can add/delete premade modules (all local MV stuff, i.e. MV Voice, Chamber of Commerice, School sites, etc.) or you can CREATE YOUR OWN module and others will be able to add/subscribe to. Very MV community based.
Network Security: No real security. Recommends installing a VPN, which they offer for FREE.
No usage data will be stored AT ALL.
All you need to access is a username and password, no mailing address info, credit card info, nothing personal whatsoever.
Don't cut off your current internet conection right away!!!! It is a new system/project, so there will be steady improvements. Wait til you are satisfied with the service before cutting off DSL/Cable internet.
CPE device: you may need this to get optimal performance in your house. Google has talked/worked with local hardware retailers (Best Buy, Fry's etc.) to ask them to stock up on these. The brand they are recommending is called PepLink Surf. CPE devices run bet $75-$200. Will most likely need one if you're using a desktop (like me).
ROLLOUT: "Trusted Testers" start in a couple a weeks...only a handful ov MV residents will be asked to participate
***Note, if you RSVPd for the event today, you will automatically be sent an invite to be a "Trusted Tester".***
Then, the rollout will increase over the summer with early August being the big launch.
