Ride video camera
Hello,

http://www.epicstealthcam.com/HTML/action_kit.html

I saw this in an ad in a magazine and thought it might be cool to add on to record rides.  Anyone had any experience with this product or anything like it?

Looks like a neat little self-contained video camera for a bike. But it's a little bit on the expensive side for what is available these days for such items. For $150 that waterproof enclosure should come standard.

You can buy nice little keychain videocams at wallgreens these days for $30, plus an SD card. You'll have to rig up your own mount -but nothing that a couple of rubber bands wouldn't do you for with a little bit of thought and initiative.

From the looks of it, it is included in the $149 dollar kit.

My camera mount:

Oh and those little shitty keychain cameras aren't worth 5 bucks. Get a used digital camera, I have a decent kodak point and shoot I'm going to start using now, instead of the newer panasonic.

That is my exact same camera almost. Mine might be a little older. It cost me $90 from Geeks.com and was a refurb unit a couple of years ago. Does yours record sound? Mine doesn't, but who cares when you are filming riding. I can go RRRRRRRrrrrrrrRRRRR! into the microphone or something when I edit it later...

I thought you had a Gen5 VFR... Guess I was wrong.

That camera does not record sound, it was a "proof of concept" thing, I borrowed it from the guy across the street, he was also the one riding the VFR while I shot off the FZ6. My cameras that record video now are a Kodak z740 and a Panasonic Lumix fx12. The Lumix is a little point and shoot like the one shown here, the Kodak is a ultra zoom point and shoot, so it's a bigger body. Despite what the ads say, you CANNOT hang a digital SLR off this mount, it's not strong enough. Not even for a little Rebel or D40. Oh, plus the kodak can turn off the display, which makes it more legal for riding, some places (Deals Gap) have busted people for having displays on their cameras.

I'm a 6th gen VFR guy.

Do you have to push the shutter to take pictures or do you set it up with like an automatic timer for the shutter? And you can take moving pictures as well?

I push the shutter with my left hand. Yes, I take moving pictures as well:

I think this was posted before:

But...

From the video page (corrected for mongoloid spelling):
The black car locked its brakes due to slowing traffic. The person driving the black car later tried to blame the accident on the cyclist. Fortunately the woman had everything on video and was able to prove she was not at fault.

Damn.

I didn't even think of an application like proof in court.

My final ride of 2008 was a test ride of my camera setup - a Flip Video Ultra attached to a RAM Mount bolted to the handlebar. The result:

The camera was about $100, and the mount around $20 (not sure on that because I also picked up magnet and suction cup bases that share some of the same hardware to use with cars at autocrosses). I should also note that the excellent sound quality, specifically the lack of wind noise, is mainly due to the camera sitting close behind my windshield, rather than anything to do with the camera itself.
