i won't guarantee you my posts for the next year are going to be long. not long at all.

but after about 2 years, i'm back from hiatus.

i'm a junior now. and that's fairly scary, to be honest... i take aps and worry about college and try to do well and don't sleep and drink lots of chai with lots of caffeine in it. i look for a job and i drive a car that takes premium gas (that is a BITCH to pay for) and i spend most my time working and not playing. i watch reruns of the office when i can and i don't write as much as i'd like but i'm trying to do well for myself here.

you see how this goes.

tonight wasn't so bad. not a lot of work to be done. driving home today i got caught behind a tourist going up to rock city that suddenly stopped in the middle of the mountain road. i wasn't really paying attention due to five hours of sleep and six the night before, so when i realized a shiny bmw was getting drastically closer to me at 35 MPH, i slammed hard on the brakes.

only to remember that the car i use now has hella sensitive brakes and i only needed a tap. fuck that. i had a head rush but i'm chill now.

i need to make it up to smurfreesboro soon.

All aboard the picspam train, woot-woot!
Say what? There's a big, passive-aggressive meme going on and someone said something not so nice to you?

When life gets me down, what gets me back up again? A HUGE PICSPAM OF HOTTIES. As such, I present:

The Great Levity Picspam of 2008!

Got a hot pic of a celebrity? POST IT IN THE COMMENTS, and then GO FORTH AND SPREAD THE WORD. Comment often, spam your little hearts out! There are no rules aside from THERE MUST BE HOTNESS and NO DISCUSSION OF THAT OTHER THING. Because sometimes you need to trade up one kind of wank for the other, if only for a little while.

Last time, this thing got 16 pages of unmitigated hotness of every conceivable kind. We can break that record, I know we can! Show your colors!

I kind of feel the need to combat the rampant negativity of the latest anonymeme (Which no, I'm not in. I put myself in them sometimes, but right now I'm going through a phase where I'm quite happy with myself and while open to constructive criticism, really would rather not be told I'm not measuring up to some random person's idea of who I ought to be.)

Ideas? A generic love meme seems so... generic. Maybe a levity picspam? I haven't had one of those since Strikethrough.

Redheaded and Redhanded

At the risk of sounding narcissistic (because I know that the fates don’t use me as a form of entertainment, despite evidence to the contrary), I have to say that some days I feel like I’m the magnet for the truly bizarre.

Before I go any further let me just stress to anyone reading this to always, always, always watch your finances. Whether it's watching totals being rung up on the register to make certain that what you're being charged is the same as what the product was priced as. I can't tell you how many times I've had to correct grocers and gas station attendants on their errors. Also, always

check your bank statements thoroughly. I don’t mean just scan it, I mean study it meticulously and make certain one red cent is not out of place.

You may think that you will never be the victim of fraud or theft because your money is tucked safely away in a bank but twice now this has happened to me and both times I caught it because I’m extremely scrupulous about keeping a close watch over my finances. The first bank theft occurred courtesy of America Online. Suffice to say I got all of my money back plus interest.

The second time was yesterday. The culprit? Wendy's.Yes you red that correctly. Wendy's as in the restaurant with the Pippi Longstockings spokeperson.

So yesterday I was online checking my balance. In case you haven't noticed, I'm a meticulous bastard, especially when it comes to my money. Anyway I noticed that I had been charged $20 exactly from a recent trip to Wendy's.

I had indeed had lunch at the Wendy's that's within walking distance from the college. But there was no way in hell I ordered $20 worth of food. I'm 6'5" and weigh 160 lbs. And that's soaking wet and holding a small rock. Also I knew this was an error because it's rare that you're charged an even dollar amount for anything.

I contacted Marcus, the Wendy's manager and he couldn't have been any more courteous. He asked me to describe the cashier and I did.

"White female, dark red hair, appeared to be in her late 20s-to mid 30s, deep southern accent, she was extremely friendly," I said.

"I know exactly who you're talking about," he said.

When I relayed the even amount I had been charged, he agreed that it was most bizarre. He told me to bring in my bank statement and he would pay me the difference.

Fast forward to today, I brought in the statement and showed it to Marcus.

"I remember you from Friday," he said.

He profusely apologized again.

"This is clearly a form of fraud and theft," he said. "That's why we had to terminate the employee."

Curious to know more I added, "Well I didn't want to get anyone fired. Had she done this to anyone else?"

"She did it to another customer on the same day several hours later," he said. "Apparently some people feel that they have to be this dishonest in this disarray of increasing gas prices."

I recalled the cashier and she was extremely courteous and polite (maybe that was to assuage her guilt for ripping me off). I never would've pegged her for being a thief. Desperate people and all that.

It would've been one thing had she ripped off the company itself. That would still be wrong but the company can take a hit. She actually stole from customers. People who are struggling to get by just like she is. There are people who are in far worse predicaments than she is and they would've never even entertained the idea of stealing.

The best I can figure is that she overcharged customers on their debit cards and she pocketed the difference. She was sloppy though. She picked the wrong one for a target. An exact $20 stood out on the bank statement which is why she was caught by me and the other customer. But then I can only wonder how many other people she's ripped off. People who aren't as scrupulous and are none the wiser.

Leave it to me to go in for a simple lunch which results in me fighting company fraud.

I'll say this though. With the awkwardness of it all, it'll be awhile before I eat at that Wendy's again.

A challenge, if you will.
I am asking for your help.

Your mission, flist, should you accept it, is to recommend me good music that I will probably like from... Oh, let's say... the last five years.

The operative word in the above sentence is "GOOD."

I can be very musically picky. (Yes, I still love Bobby Brown. Eighties music is it's own separate entity, so hush.) I challenge you to convert me to the newer music you like. I'm serious, too -- If you want to convince me, you'd better provide examples. More than one is best, with links, even if it's just to YouTube. Be as verbose as you like about why you like a particular artist. It's probably actually better if you are, TBH.

I'm going to try to be open-minded. Most music on the Top 40 stations these days makes me want to stab myself in the eye. I don't have a particular genre I prefer, aside from not liking country or thrasher death metal. Or singers who sound like they're whining because they can't actually sing worth a shit... Oh, oops, that eliminated most of the newer bands, didn't it? :P

Some examples of music I really love )

Jesus, this got really long. I'm going to go read about art now, but I'M DEPENDING ON YOU GUYS TO HELP ME. I'm so out of touch. BRING ME INTO THE NOW.

Mad Men Style
My boy Vincent Kartheiser has been doing immensely well for himself.

Following his success as Connor (one of my favorite characters) on the hit series Angel, Kartheiser is now starring on the critically acclaimed hit series Mad Men along with Christina Hendricks, better known as Saffron from another Joss Whedon series, Firefly.

That reminds me, I need to add season of Mad Men to my Netlfix queue. Apparently some chick masturbates to a dryer or something.

Anyway promoting the second season of Mad Men, Playboy recently did a shoot featuring the stars of Mad Men including my beau Kartheiser. I tell you, sexy never looked so stylish.

Personal Canon
An interesting post for all you HP fen: [info]itsbeenvery wants to know about that time you ignored canon. To quote the post: "What do you like to write or draw or vid or manip, etc. that you know isn't strictly canon if you were to compare against JKR, but often shows up in your work?"

Naturally, all of my habits were to do with Sirius. I've never focused long enough on anybody else to develop any.

In other news, I really, REALLY need to force myself to work. ARG.

betty came by on her way.
My first class was last night, and it went very well. The instructor is very nice and not rushing through any material, so I think this won't be too much of a struggle. Of course today I have to track down the book from whatever mysterious location it's available at. And I have to get a calculator. BUT HEY. Part of the novel experience, right?

Also, sorry I've been so lackluster on comment replying lately! Rest assured I'm not at all shunning anybody, just tired a lot, I read everything that's said and as always, I don't read my friends list on any kind of filter, so if you're on here, you can be sure I've read your latest entries absolutely. I read everything, lurking silently in the bushes of the internet. I'm creepy that way.

My schedule lately's mostly been work, school stuff, come home to do more doll work and roll around with Ozzy (aka Weasel, aka Ozzbot, aka Ozozel) who apparently needs me desperately at all hours of the day beginning at about seven AM. Look, cat, I love you desperately, but it is NOT that important so early for you to come in here, sniff at a few things, and leave. I haven't died. And even if I do, [info]graymary can feed you from then on. Stop worrying.

'Til the stars no longer wink.
I'm really not looking forward to how long this day is bound to be. Monthly reviews are due before the end of the day tomorrow, so I'm going to be quite busy here at work, then when I get home I have to cram a week's worth of art history reading into a few hours (Whoever had the bright idea of making the last week only 3 days long was a fucking genius, I tell you.)

Speaking of school, my class next session is "Strategies for Online Learning." Oh, that sounds like fun. If to you fun means having to shell out money for a tedious class you don't actually need. The good news is that it should be a lot easier than the class I'm taking right now, so hopefully I'll have more free time for the next 5.5 weeks.

We should be moving into our new offices end of this week/beginning of next, so that should be a pain in my ass, but one I am willing to gracefully endure under the circumstances. We went over to peek in the new space yesterday, and it's a lot bigger than I thought it would be, so I'm happy. It's kinda dirty, and you can tell it was built in the 80s, but it's supposed to be cleaned out for us and they'll be remodelling all the offices over there in about 2 months. Overall, I am pleased.
