In the community [info]brutal_honesty, [info]fadedtapestry decides to explain that

I won't ignore the fact that these dumb ass women (and men in very rare cases), walk into the most assinine of situations and then sob on our collective shoulders.

Is rape good? Hell fucking no.
Is rape acceptable? Hell fucking no.
Is rape forgiveable? Hell fucking no.

Are most rape victims to blame at least partially? Hell yes!

Stop pacifying these broads by saying, "oh, its not your fault sweety..." no of course not, its not your fault you went out and got pissed drunk and went to sleep over some guys house who you assumed was a "friend" and when he had his way with you (because you were probably all over him while you were drunk), suddenly you are a victim and he's the worst bastard in the world.

The truth is that he's a scumbag and you're a cumrag. Both of you should be locked up.

Uh- so drinking and crashing at a (male) friend's house makes you unable to say no to sex, does it? Why? Are men incapable of controlling their libidos? Or am I mistaken in regarding guys as human beings capable of treating other people as independent entities with feelings?

Oookay then. Good to know. Hope you've advised any female friends you may have that the word "no" is insufficient should they crash at yours after a party. And that "most" rape victims are to blame for their own rape.

It's not difficult here. If someone doesn't want sex with you, and you force them, that's not their fault.

Here's the deal. Fucking someone, drunk, unconscious, whatever, takes conscious thought and effort. A guy's dick is NOT a force of nature, like gravity. It will NOT magickally take over his body and go pounding away at the nearest bodily orifice because the poor baby can't help himself when presented with an opportunity.

If some shithead takes advantage of a drunk/helpless/scared person and fucks them while they're unable to defend themselves, he's the responsible party in that situation, plain and simple. It doesn't matter if he's some bully with a gun to her head or some coward who puts a roofie in her drink. When one party is helpless and something happens, the one who isn't helpless carries the blame by default.

Is it SMART for someone to get drunk around strangers/walk around in a bad neighborhood dressed provocatively/let herself get alone with the half dozen muscleheaded frat boys? No. People have to be more careful than this BECAUSE there are rapists out there. But the rapists themselves are to blame for the hazard they present.

"Blame the victim" has been the party line of cops, the legal system and lawmakers for time immemorial. Probably because most of them are men who have never been raped. Every time I hear some asshole spout said party line, I wish him a week in San Quentin without any Vaseline.

*sigh* Y'know, it's time we accepted that the world is an ugly place. Rape is not okay, and the rape of a passed out girl in a skirt or naked or whatever is still a rape and still wrong. HOWEVER, as women we should also be aware that it's not very smart to pass out at a stranger's house and that we need to protect ourselves because no one's gonna do it for us. Not all men are rapists, but booze makes us all dumb and cuts down on that thinkng thing that normally otherwise preserves us. So, like, while it *should* be your right to pass out where ever you want in whatever state of dress or undress that you desire, the world just isn't that nice a place. Preventing a rape is just as important as punishing a rapist.

Oh, of course. And taking sensible steps to protect yourself are wise. But the vast majority of rapes occur between people who know one another- which is why it's so hard to prove. And the statement here was:

I think most of us can say that we've stayed the night at a male friend's. I don't regard that as high risk behaviour. And it's also the case that saying a rape victim who's acted unwisely "deserves to be locked up" is inane. It further misses the point that she's already suffered grievously- so suggesting she "deserves" yet more suffering... there are no words.

Taking sensible steps to protect yourself from harm is a damn good idea. But they wouldn't stop the vast majority of attacks anyway, and even if they did- the remaining victims are still just that. And it was the denial of that that I was disputing.
