March next to Parc Lafontaine

Hey Montreal!

There was a march by young people (CEGEP- and high school-age) just now along Cherrier and up Avenue Parc Lafontaine. I am terrible at guessing numbers but there were easily more than 500 people. I couldn't really read what's on the signs from my window, so I hope someone here knows of the demonstration and can let me know who organized it, and why. Thanks!

Urgent Call for Support! Algonquins of Barriere Lake

This was sent to me, thought I would spread it around:

Public Assembly & Mobilization Meeting
When? Tuesday, March 18th, 2008, 6pm – 8pm (THAT IS RIGHT NOW, FOLKS)
Where? Native Friendship Center Montreal 2001 St. Laurent, corner of Ontario, Metro St. Laurent
Free dinner & childcare provided on site
Wheelchair accessible
Donations of non-perishable foods requested

The federal government has just deposed Barriere Lake's Customary Chief and Council – with the Sureté du Quebec helping to impose a minority faction as the new leadership – in order to get out of signed agreements with the community!

The Customary Chief and Council and the majority of the community have been struggling to have the federal and provincial governments fulfill several important agreements they've signed over the last two decades. The agreements are meant to give Barriere Lake a say in the management of their traditional territories, protect Algonquin practices, and give them a share of resource revenue from the logging and hydro industry on their land.

But rather than honour the agreements, the Department of Indian Affairs has ousted the Barriere Lake's Customary Chief and Council, and appointed an interim band council made up of a minority community faction, in clear violation of Barriere Lake's Customary Governance Code.

The CSN union bosses may or may not be reading this, but…

With the upcoming festival of picket-lines coming to an STM route near you, I thought I'd throw an icon up for anyone who thinks that the union is about to dump on the (non-car-owning, non 9-to-5ing) populace for sheer greed (and possibly to justify their own existence).

Converting some numbers from the news, these guys are already 33.1% better-paid than their average provincial and private-sector counterparts, and in a show of their true colours, reject a 5-year deal in favour of a 3-year one so they can do this again sooner. Not that that stopped them in 2003, when we got an (illegal) wildcat strike and were compensated a piddly $2 last November. Edit: I've read the press releases from the both the CSN and the STM as well as the Gazette's coverage. I've done my homework, I'm not making this up. And I know that individual transit maintenance workers may be getting screwed by their conflict-happy union. Heck, these guys are sullying the rest of the union movement's reputation when they have dire problems to deal with./Edit

So, if you want to show your solidarity with health-care workers, cleaning staff, night watchpeople and other people who need off-peak transit to work and feed their families, here's an option. I'm often a lefty-ish union-friendly, damn the man type, but when a union does something dumb, you've got to call them on it.

Protest on Rue University

Hello all,
Just wanted to know what was going today at Rue University. I was on St Catherine's and saw hundreds of people protesting, I was too far to see their posters. What was it about? I checked CBC and it says there was a protest about tuition hikes. Is that it? And how did it end?

I'm doing a project for uni. on the election campaign, with a focus on the electoral signs.
and i need to find signs that have been vandalized, but intelligently.
well, not just random grafitti on top of it.

i have mont-royal street covered... i've found PQ candidates with dollar signs in their eyes, and ADQ/Nazi associations.

If you see any, please just let me know where it is so I can go photograph it! thank you :)

"Mettez Vos Culottes"

Does anyone know what those "Mettez Vos Culottes [...]" signs downtown are about? They're all along Ste-Catherines, have been for a while. And I can't figure out what they're about.

Something about a governmental error? They have a picture of a kid named Alexandre on them...

I'm so confused. (Thanks!)
