Tea sets and cafes

Are there any cafes around Atwater or Guy Concordia metro that make really good lattes (non starbucks/second cup/java-u is preferred), aren't crazy noisy, have free wifi and will let me study there for hours and hours? (I plan on buying things, of course but you know...)

and...

Is there a store that sells tea sets like the one in this picture?

Ideally they wouldn't be terribly expensive (more than 100$ or something).

Thank you. Any input is appreciated.

tea houses?

My mother and Grandmother are visitng me from California. One of the things they like to do is to drink tea. Are there any awesome tea houses here that I could take them to? Their hotel is on Rene-Levesque and St. Denis so anywhere within a couple mile radius would be cool. I've been to Salon de Thé in old port, as well as Esprithé up on Laurier. Can any tea freaks help a girl out? thank you!

Cafe

Is there a good cafe on st. laurent, or the surrounding plateau area, that has free wi-fi that would be good to study at? I could just go to Second Cup but I prefer something a bit less commercial.

Thanks

Rec for a good tea house/room?

Hello Montreal!

Does anyone know of a good tea house or tea room in town? Like, a real one? Real english tea, real scones, real clotted cream and tea cakes. And of course, good tea. Plus if it's in the downtown area and/or easily accesible by public transit.

Thank you in advance!

Le Cagibi? Hair?

I haven't been to this place since it was Esperanza, and I've heard it's really different now. How has it changed? Is it even still open?

Also, suggestions for hairdressers across the island skilled in dying hair red, preferably with more natural dyes (Aveda or the like).

Thank you!

Hi!

So I've looked through the Jean-Talon/Wireless Hotspots/Cafes tags and searched Google without many conclusive results...

I'm looking for a Cafe/bistro with free Wifi in the Jean-Talon metro/Little Italy area. Somewhere that doesn't mind me spending an hour or two working on an essay with the laptop (don't worry, I'll be sure not to just buy a $1 coffee and then tie up a table).

I hope this exactly question hasn't been answered like, two posts down. But thanks in advance!

Places to watch election results?

I don't have a TV. Are there any good places around the Plateau, Mile End or even Little Italy/Petite-Patrie where one could have a leisurely coffee or beer and watch the election results come in? French or English doesn't matter, although I'd prefer not to be in a Bloc clubhouse.

Calories

So my favourite hang-out place, Calories, closed down a little while ago. I remember one of the employees telling me they were under new management and that they would be renovating, which is what I guess they are doing now. Anybody aware of when they are going to re-open? I am craving for some iced tea!!

in the vein of my last post...

firstly, thanks for everyone that swung by and dropped off their CVs at Nicolosi. we're looking at them all now.

secondly, after discussing with the boss, we're going to be starting a student menu/discount. we haven't worked out all the details yet, but rest assured that you'll be able to get a nice full meal for under 10$ taxes in. all you need to do is show your student id when you come to pay. and since I know how much us students love our coffee, especially during exams, students can get a 12oz for 1.50$ plus tax.

so come study with us! lots of tables and relaxing environment to ease the last minute panic. plus, we're situated between mcgill and concordia.

and if that doesn't convince you, we're one of the only places in montreal that have an ice cappucino. and it's not that stuff from tim's or dunkin or any other chains. no, it's a real italian ice cappucino. and boy, is it yummy. and good for you too!

Searching for a dance venue

Hi folks,

My friends and I recently began searching around the NDG-CDN area for a place to hold a bi-monthly blues dance with an introductory dance class; either a bar or cafe that wouldn't mind hosting us, or an inexpensive studio (under $25/hour) with wooden floors. Anyone know of or own such a place?

Good cafes near Parc/St-Viateur?

I'm a fan of Cagibi and Open da Nite, but beyond those two I don't know too much about local cafes in the area.  What are some cool places to chill out for extended periods of time with a nice cuppa around there?

Free / VERY cheap activities and places (secret places)

Hello Everyone!
I'm trying to find some free or very cheap activities or places around Montreal. Do you know of a free open access area where one can sit and enjoy the city? What about a place that has cheap coffee/tea, and a decent environment for a talk with a friend (or free refills?) Do you know of any secret places to relax and read?

Preferences are downtown and Mile End/the plateau area, but anything will be considered! (If only it weren't so cold outside!)

Thank you very much.

Can anyone recommend a cool and cozy little cafe near to the Eaton Center downtown? Something hip and with character...
We're looking to relax and have a conversation over coffee/tea (so nothing with too loud music).

Thanks in advance for all suggestions/recommendations!

a two part question

1. does anyone know of a place downtown or in the plateau that has some sort of glass gazebo or heated/enclosed terrasse? though i'm awake during daylight hours and everywhere i go there's a window nearby, i want more direct sunlight. it doesn't have to be a cafe, just somewhere i can go and read for extended periods of time while bathing in the glorious sunshine this city has to offer.

2. does anyone have any recommendations for good calling cards? for years, i have been using a phone card called "calling card" to make calls to bc. i've been to 7 or 8 depanneurs in the past two weeks and it doesn't seem to be available anymore. it had no connection fee and provided 10 hours for $5. (supposedly. i never logged my calls.) i have found that asking dep cashiers is a very bad solution, and i'm tired of randomly buying a card only to end up getting 100 minutes at best.

thank you!

Things to do in the plateau

I just moved to the neighbourhood and while i know about a couple of places that are good to go to in the evening, i'm sure there's lots i don't know about. Where can i go to
1) find a cafe (other than Cagibi and Arts Cafe) that has music most nights of the week with inexpensive cover charges?
2) find a bar that has a dj that plays rock/indie/etc during the week with an inexpensive or free cover charge?

"Replacing" L'Utopik

So, now that we've lost one of the best cafe/bar/restos in the city, I think it's an appropriate time to make a collection of places that are friendly to the kind of people who enjoyed L'Utopik and its beautiful ways. I'll start it off, but feel free to add or modify this plan as you see fit :)

We're looking for places that excel in one or more (hopefully more) of the outstanding qualities, to whit:
-Really groovy ambiance
-Centrally located, and near a metro (this is the doom of so many of the plateau/mile end places, alas.)
-Bright and colorful
-Open late, open every day, sections open and free even when there's a show going on
-Never too noisy to have a conversation (even with a tiny voice like mine), but still happy and lively
-Has free and plentiful music/art shows/poetry readings, etc.
-Really good, vegetarian-friendly food at a variety of prices (ie $3 soup with huge bread for when you're broke, special notice for massive heaps of affordable nachos... god I'll miss their nachos)
-Has beer, but isn't full of drunk people. Or if it is, they're nice drunk people.
-In-house supply of books and board games
-Free wifi, or even not, but at least...
-... allows you to sit and talk or read or work or practice your guitar or make chainmail for as long as you want with zero pressure to move it along.
-Always an open couch
-Teeny, functioning iron stove/skylight/second floor vantage/mini balcony/ other magnificent architectural curiosities

That's enough to make me sufficiently sad, so I'll leave it there for now. Even when Utopik did exist, I really wanted to find other similar places, and now it is of greater import than ever.  The only places I know that have a number of the above are le Petit Gaule by Charlevoix metro (but their tea is way too pricey so I never go there), and Cagibi/Esperanza but that's a major pain to get to from NDG. But they could work for other people!  So, Montreal community, lets see if we can come up with a list :)

French/French with French people

Hello

I am wondering if anyone knows where I can find a or several cafés owned by a French person, same thing for restaurant, a REAL French restaurant and a French cook, same thing for a French boulangerie, a French clothes boutique, etc. Precise addresses would be highly appreciated, I heard the Plateau is a good area but where ?

Thank you

Verdun Cafes on a Tuesday Evening

Suggestions on cafes in Verdun that are still open / will be open tonight. There are 4 of us, we just want a coffee/tea/snackie, and we aren't really into chains. We don't want to go to Cha Noir because we are going to be loud and it's so..... proper. But maybe we could sit on the terrasse

Blue Monday is closed.
Buanderies Cosmik Cafe is closed.
NuArt is closed on Tuesdays.
Cafe de l'artiste's phone is diconnected.

a message from [my band] the LAKE OF STEW:

Brothers and Sisters!
the lake of stew will be making its triumphant return to our all-time favorite venue, le cagibi (5490 st laurent - ex-pharmacie esperanza). we will be playing this saturday, june 23, in honor of the fête st-jean and we're asking all of our friends and neighbors to represent and show your support for the 10th best band in montreal (according to the montreal mirror). it will be a pass-the hat affair, so bring your piggy-banks, your loudest hollerin' voices, and your most beat-up dancin' shoes 'cuz you're gonna need 'em! this should prove to be one hot show. we're all pumped-up for this one, so come on down! and drink your face off...

Second Cup - Loyola

Does anyone know the phone number for, or closing hours of, the Second Cup by Concordia's Loyola campus?  It's on Sherbrooke Ouest, between Westminster and West Broadway.  It doesn't seem to be popping up either on the café locator on secondcup.com or on yellowpages.ca, probably because it's pretty new.  Any ideas?  I'm hoping it's not one of those ones that closes at ridiculously early hours.
Thanks!
