Books!

I have two questions to ask of you guys:

1. I want to know where I can donate books. They are in relatively good condition, some are new and not even read yet! I just have tons everywhere and I'd like to get rid of them. It's a shame cause I've spent so much money on books over the years... Anywhere that you can think of? I've heard of this store on St. Charles in Point Claire - unsure of name and whereabouts on that street...

2. On the topic of books, anyone interested in buying books for real cheap prices? I have a few series (Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind - 11 books + Debt of bones, House of Night by PC Cast & Kristin Cast - 5 books, and then tons of random ones that I could compile a list of for those that are interested). I could meet you either week day evenings or weekends depending on your area and such.

Thanks for all your help!

Books

Hello Montreal,

I don't know where to ask this so I may as well start here.

I was cleaning out my bookshelf and came across couple of books (about 60 years old for the first set). Specifically, they are first editions of Agatha Christie novels and a first edition of Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, published by the defunct Pan Books.  Due to financial constraints, I have to sell them off. Does anyone know where there are places I could get them appraised or any stores that may be interested in these (well I think) 'rare' books?

Thanks!

BOOKS FOR SALE

I'd like to clear some space on my bookshelves, so, I'm selling some of my books. Some of these are out of print (Rokutousei Supika, for instance) and harder to get nowadays. Generally they're all in good condition, but some are pretty old, so if you want a photo of anything, tell me and I'll put it up.

Unless otherwise noted, softcovers are $1, hardcovers are $4, manga are $3 and light novels are $5. I prefer to meet up at a metro station or downtown. :)

Comic Book Stores

Anyone recommend any English comic book stores? (Preferably near a metro, I have no car and a tight schedule) Not particularly manga, but American published books. I'm searching for the Marvel: Civil War series and a handful from Frank Miller. Price range as well?

I've looked up Archambault, and they only have french language comics.

EDIT: I just found a similar post a few pages down, so here's another couple of questions: good sushi places? Asking for an authentic style bistro is way too much so I'll just stick with decent and a worthwhile price. Also are there places that you can order band/artist t-shirts from? I've been scrounging for shirts that only sell in foreign websites that i can't manage... it's a bit of a bizarre request, but I'm growing into desperate.

I Like You by Sandol Stoddard

Next week is going to be my 6months anniversary with the boyfriend. I wanted to get him something special. I'd really like to get him I Like You by Sandol Stoddard but the Chapters website where i get most my reading materials from says that it's not available in stores so wonderful Montreal community - if you could tell me where within the Montreal area i can get it from? I know i can order online but I'd rather buy in a actual store. I just love this book even thought it's technically for children,  I just think it's incredibly sweet and i just know he will love it!

Three language questions:

1. Japanese game shows
Does anyone know if there are any digital channels I can get on Videotron that show a lot of Japanese game shows? I know the men's channel (Spike?) used to show Most Extreme Elimination Challenge...

2. French TV for an anglophone
Are there any good Quebecois/French TV shows that you'd recommend to an intermediate French speaker? It'd be great if they were on regular TV, but I wouldn't mind downloading if I could find torrents for them.

3. French young-adult books
Are there any good French-language young-adult novels (I'm thinking the Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret of Quebec) that you could recommend? I'd like to start reading French books, but I think young-adult might be easier for me. I tend to prefer contemporary to classical stuff, but the emphasis is on being interesting but also reasonably easy to read.

Thanks all!

non-mainstream children's books

Hi, I'm looking for a book called The House that Crack Built and other similar children's books such as this one and this one.
Obviously I can get them on the internet... Amazon and such, but I was wondering if there was anywhere local and independent.
I live in the Lower Plateau, so anything in the area is preferable.

Also, if people have some great non-mainstream children's books to recommend (great illustrations a plus), I'd love to hear it.
Thanks for any help!

NANA Day

First, most of you probably went "WTF is NANA?" Nana is a manga (or Japanese comic if you prefer) and I figured that there must be quite a few fans of it in Montreal if the books are often gone in libraries. So, for those interested, the event will be held on July 7, 2007. Because we need to discuss the final details, please visit this address: http://sushicorp.com/nanaday/

Free books! -- The Great Montreal Book Swap

We've all got them -- books we know we're never going to read. Maybe you read them and didn't enjoy them. Maybe you never got around to reading that "classic" your aunt gave you five Christmases ago. Whatever the reason, you don't want it around, but you know that throwing out a book will send you to a special hell reserved for child molesters and people who talk in the theatre.

What do you do?

You post your books to the Great Montreal Book Swap: [info]montrealbooks

Browse the listings of books from other members and post your own. If you see something you like, get in touch with the owner and work out a time to meet and give over the books! It's that simple.

What are you waiting for? Free books await!

IMPORTANT QUERY FOR YOU ALL

Hey everyone, I have an important dilemma that has to be solved rather promptly.

My place of work was about to throw out over 1000 used books today just because they couldn't sell them, and in a crisis of conscious I decided I couldn't let that happen. So I've taken it upon myself to try and find a worthy cause/organization that will accept these books as donation. I scoured two different Yellow Pages and came up with this list of the following associations:

Aide International a l'enfant
Associations des libraries du Quebec
Association of administators of English Schools of Quebecs
Associes benevoles qualifies au services des jeunes
Canadian federation of Students Quebec
Children's Wish Foundation
Coup de pouce Jeunesse
Fondation des amis de l'enfance Inc.
Les petits freres des pauvres
Pointe Adult Centre for Education
Sun Youth
Tour de Lire
Big Brothers and Big Sisters de l'Ouest de l'ile
Quebec Library Association

I was also considering donating them to hospitals and palliative care centers.

The books in question are of all varieties, french, english, fiction, non fiction, reference, children, teen, adult, etc. I'd seperate them and donate accordingly, but I'd prefer if I could unload them to one central location.

My question is: Is anyone here affiliated with any of these organizations, or does anyone know anything about these organizations? Are they meritable? Which would be the best place for me to send them? Are there others (like a literacy/illiteracy association) that would merit these books more or specifically deal with donating used books to worthy causes?

Keep in mind that they have to be donated, and that the place I give them to can't turn around and sell them for profit. However, selling them where the profits go to betterment of the foundation is another story.

Thanks so much to anyone who responds!

New Bookstores and Comics/Graphic Fiction

I found some good information on here about used bookstores in Montreal, but what are the best non-chain new bookstores here?

Also, I am interested in where I could find a good selection of contemporary alternative comics and graphic fiction (like Seth, American Elf, Chris Ware, etc...) Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!
