German Bakeries

Hello!

I was in Germany this summer and I throoughly enjoyed the pleasure of German bakeries! I was wondering if there are some bakeries in Montreal, especially in the downtown area? I'm looking for brezels, breads, leberkaese etc... especially brezels though- I love them!

Thanks!

Mille Crepes in Montreal?

Hi Montreal community!

I've recently discovered this heavenly-looking thing that is the Mille Crepes. Basically, it's a pastry made of layers and layers of thin pancakes, with different sorts of fillings in between. Pictures here.

Now my question is, does anybody know where I can find this here in Montreal? From a quick Google search I found that the restaurant Jun-I does serve it, but I don't feel like having a dinner in a fancy expensive restaurant just to try it. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance!

Looking for a Cake

I need a cake, and I'm having trouble finding what I want. What I don't want is a cake from IGA or the like, or a crazy fancy custom cake. I just want to buy a really good, normal cake that I don't have to order far in advance and that is reasonably priced.

I live in St-Henri, and if I could find a place in the area, or Westmount, Little Burgundy, or the west part of downtown, that would be great. I am willing to travel, but I don't have a car, so someplace that's easy enough to get to by public transportation would be best.

I've searched, but I can't seem to find any information online.

Thank you!

Turnip cake

Hi, the craving suddenly hit, and I was wondering if anyone knows of any chinese restaurants/bakeries where they have turnip cake (Law Bok Gow). Preferably downtown or within walking distance of a metro.

Much appreciated!

cake decorating class and gym?

I'm looking for a cake decorating class on the island, near NDG if at all possible. I looked up some previous posts mentioning the Cake Queen and Chef a la Carte, but CQ's courses website isn't working, and Chef a la carte appears to only have a 2-session course on a Sunday. I'm really looking for an evening course, something that might run over a few weeks maybe. Does anyone know if anything like that is available?

Second thing I'm looking for is gym info... I know there is an Energie Cardio on Sherbrooke and a YMCA in NDG, but neither of their websites seem to give any information on what the membership costs are like. If anyone can give me an idea that would be much appreciated... If there are other gyms in the area that are friendly, reasonably-priced, have free weights and are female-friendly (not necessarily female only), I'd love to hear about them too!

Berliners

I'm looking for Berlines for father's day. I have a car, so it's ok if you recommend a bakery that's not downtown. More specifically I'm looking for the ones filled with either manjar or pastry cream. Thanks!

Can you recommend a good Jewish Bakery?

Hello!

I'm looking for a Jewish bakery with a "homemade" type of feel to it.

There are some bakeries I've been to in Montreal, but the goods just are not very appealing to me. For example, sometimes it's just a piece of cheap cake with a ton of icing. So I am not looking for a generic bakery, or a touristy-type of place.

Is there anything like this around? Or if you don't know of a Jewish bakery, can you recommend somewhere of the similar homemade feel?

Thank you!!

ps. In case you're wondering, I picked up a book from the library on Israeli Cuisine, but I never got around to cooking any of the dishes, or the desserts - and now I'd just like to try the 'real thing' first, before I make it myself.

Small baking classes in Montreal?

I've googled and checked the tags and now I put it out to you, this community that's given me so much great info in the past.

I was wondering where (or even IF) I could find baking classes in Montreal that aren't too pricy. I don't mean a career school or anything, but a day. or evening(s) one shot type of deal. I'd like to give that as a present to my fiancee (her baking is already delicious, she's the one who's expressed an interest) and the only ones I've found so far are at the Culinary Institute (much too pricy at 375 dollars).

I've asked around at the few bakeries I know (that's not many) but so far I'm not getting anywhere.

Bakeries that do custom cakes?

I'm looking for a bakery that can make a Halloween-themed cake for my friends' anniversary party on Saturday. Anyone know of a place? Should I just go to Loblaws, or is there somewhere better?

pastries/ cake like small things

 Hi

im looking for a bakery that sells really tasty eclairs and pretty little cakes in circles and stuff for a reasonable price and tastes good...not really pastries.  More like the items in the pictures.

i looked at the memories but im not really into the cocoa locale type of baked good.  more traditional pastries/ cake.
Au Pain Dore sells more pastries.....im looking for cake like pastries?

someone told me about a place called patisserie ganache...okay the spelling is totally wrong but i know it starts with patisserie _____ second word starts with a G.  It is located downtown across from a Maxie.  Does anyone know what I am talking about?  they also make cakes there. im sorry i am so vague, my memory has been so bad lately.

THANKS!

**and how is Patisserie Harnois priced? looks great..but might put a huge dent in my wallet.

Santropol bread

this might not be news to anyone but me, but i thought i'd share...

you too can make sandwiches at home like the ones at Santropol! on my most recent visit, i finally convinced one of the waitresses to give me the recipe for the bread. well, not the recipe because they don't make it themselves... but they have it supplied by a bakery down the street. so i went searching and sure enough... if you continue going east on Duluth O. from Santropol, you'll come across Stella Estrella a little bit past St Laurent (on the corner of St Dominique, i believe?). i snatched up a loaf of the wheat bread and a few natas for good measure and it is all very delish.

so if you're a fan of Santropol, or just enjoy a really good loaf of wheat bread and are wandering around the Plateau, then give it a try :)

What is your favourite place to have cupcakes in Montreal?

I've only tried those on Mont-Royal near St-Hubert. Can't remember the name of the place. Were quite good but a bit too dry.

What are your recommendations?

Gingerbread/pain d'epice

Where can I find gingerbread?

One of those gingerbread house kits would be perfect but at this point even pre-made doughs I can roll out or cookies would be good enough. I looked in Metro, Provigo, and another bakery but you'd think it's friggin July or something. I can't find it anywhere! So if anyone has any leads... much obliged!

Wedding cake shops in Montreal

Alright, so I have been thinking about moving to Montreal in the near future.

I am very interested in culinary arts, especially baking. I just finished a Culinary Management program at Fanshawe college here in London, ON. I'm currently working in a wedding cake shop and love it.

I looked in the memories and couldn't find anything about wedding cake shops there. I know there are tons of bakeries and sweet shops, but my interests are directed at wedding cake decorations.

If anyone has any recommendations or links to previous entries, I would gladly appreciate it. Thanks!

Hot chocolate place

A coworker told me that there is a place in Montreal that serves the best hot chocolate. Unfortunately, she's on vacation now, and I'm leaving for Montreal in a week or so. Any ideas?
Thanks!

delicious baked goods

What are some good bakeries in the town?
I know Fairmount has delicious bagels, but what about more sweet fare? Perhaps some tarte au sucre? Or anything, seriously, I am just craving some fresh baked sweet delicious things. Anywhere that's within the boundries of the orange line, and near UdM campus is prefered.
Thanks
