Art anyone?

I have vacation for the next month so I want to find partners to do art.  I like to paint acrylics, oil, sculpture, mixed media and draw.    I also do art on photoshop and Z-brush.

If anyone is interested in starting a group to practice any of these activities drop me a line.    The idea is to share techniques, critique each other, give ideas, even to work on a portfolio.

Ex-pat coming back for a weekend - suggestions please!

Hi everyone,

I lived in Montreal many years ago, and I'm coming for a visit next weekend (from November 28 to December 1) with two friends. I haven't been back for a really long time, and my friends live in New York and have never visited Montreal before. I'm pretty sure the years will have changed the city somewhat - so, to that end, does anyone have recommendations for the following?:

- shows (theatre/music/comedy) for that weekend
- awesome Montreal bars/restaurants
- best place to get a tattoo/piercing
- clothing/shoe stores (esp. places that might stock larger sizes - Addition-Elle excepted!)

I know this is all pretty general, but we're hoping to pack a week's worth of fun into one hectic, only-in-Montreal weekend. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

(PS: Mods, sorry in advance if I've overused/misused the tags...)

Cancer Connections - Promenade Place Des Arts - free all month!

I was so very moved by the amount of people that turned out to the opening of cancer connections today. Put on by the organization called photosensitive.com,  the project is a traveling exposition by photographers (professional and non-professional) whose lives have been touched by cancer. The show started in toronto, and will move across the country and with each stop, people in each provence are encouraged to submit photos of themselves, friends, family, loved ones and share their stories. So far, I think the count is 300, and by the time it returns to Ottawa in 2010, the organizers hope to have over 1000 images!

the picture I took of my mom was there - we could not make it to the grand opening in toronto cause she was having surgery to remove a tumor from her lung, but now she's on the mend and let me tell you, standing there, surrounded by hundreds of other images of people who have had cancer in their lives, in one way or another  was scary and humbling at the same time.

All the images are 16x20 inches, black and white with a little blurb about the photographer/subject. My mom is the woman with the cookie cutter sized hole in her back - standing strong, looking beautiful, surviving each day, one marvelous moment at a time.

Walking around the site (open air concept) made me realize just how common cancer has become - quite scary. But being able to meet with other montrealers who were at the vernisage, and talk with them about their experiences made me realize just how much I love this city and the people in it.

so go and see it - be a part of it! I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!!

June 14th WWKIPDay

Hi Montreal,

Saturday, June 14th is WWKIPDay.. That's right, World-Wide Knit in Public Day. Not sure why it needs its own day but if you want to join in the fun, there will be a motley crew of knitters meeting in Parc Lafontaine at noon.

Description from Montreal Knits:
How to get there:
Across from Centre Culturel Calixa-Lavallée

Please bring:
Snacks, water, sunscreen and anything you desire. And your knitting.

The backup plan is:
We don't have one: if it rains, we'll either meet at a favorite LYS or one of our usual haunts. Don't know what we're talking about? Better visit our dotcom to find out more...

This KIP is not knitting exclusive
There are free bathrooms available nearby

    Knitting Circles in Montreal

Are there any Stitch n Bitch or knitting circles in Montreal? Specifically, in the Plateau area or Mile End..

I've been poking around and found The Montreal Knitting Guild (but they meet in Beaconsfield and I don't have a car!) and Montreal Knits, but their blog hasn't been updated since last winter. I think Concordia used to have a craft meeting at the Coop Bookstore, but I can't find information on this anywhere.

Alternatively, are there any knitters that want to arrange something?

    Life drawing + cabaret: TODAY

This summer there were a couple posts asking about life drawing classes. This post is for YOU -- if you're okay with the crazy kind of life drawing.

Just came upon the montreal chapter of Dr.Sketchy's. Don't know how long there has been one here but looks like there's a session IN A FEW HOURS.

Sorry It's such short notice. I have nothing to do with this group, but I've seen work from new york and LA Dr.Sketchy's which are all varieties of awesome.

Edit: okay found ANOTHER blog for Dr.Sketchy's montreal with photos and so on buried under their myspace page.

    01. Can anyone recommend a good stable, ranch, school or other facility that offers moderately-priced horseback riding lessons and guided trails for a semi-beginner? I've never taken steady lessons before and I haven't gone riding in years, but I've done like the guided circuits a few times; I'm just out of practice. I've been aching to get back into riding and I figure there's no harm in asking!

    02. Does anyone around here play ukulele, have a ukulele or chord book that they want to get rid of, or know where I could get a ukulele?

    03. What's happening in the way of museums and art galleries these days? Are there any cool things to check out right now? How's that human body one, is that still going?

I know it was talked about a year ago or so but has anyone managed to compile a list of local arts/crafts shows? It's a slow time of year for a lot of artisans and I'm hoping there's something out there for us that I'm just missing?

Also, while I'm here, I'm a published polymer clay artist (my pieces are all one of a kind) and instructor with a little experience in silversmithing. I'm looking for someone to work with on some polyclay/precious metal pieces for galleries and book submissions. I don't feel my silver work is up to par and I'd love to have a more experienced person to collaborate with. I'm thinking bezels and bails mostly. Anyone? Blacksquiggles @ hotmail.com.

    Location for Small Fire

I need to find a location to have a small fire for the sake of art for tomorrow.

It can be anywhere in, around, or within two hours driving distance of the island of Montreal.

I have a small model building I've built that I need to burn down and take a video and photographs of it happening. The problem is location. I've been trying to find somewhere appropriate for two weeks. The two that were supposed to be guaranteed fell through. It should take around an hour for the structure to burn all the way through.

It's very, very last minute, but if anyone has any suggestions of places that it might be cool (I don't want to end up in court or anything)I'd greatly appreciate it. Campgrounds, trailer parks, quarries, beaches, your front lawn, etc.

I'd also be willing to pay for the use of a location, ie: someone's back yard if it were permissible.

    Thanks.

    local artisans

If any of you are looking to do some last minute shopping, or just looking for something to do, may i suggest a visit to the Salon des Metiers d'Art going on at Place Bonaventure. today and tomorrow are the last days of it, admission is free, and you get to browse the wares of and support hundreds of artisans from around Quebec and Canada. last year i bought a small inukshuk sculpture to send to a friend in California and the lady who made them was absolutely tickled pink that one of her pieces was travelling so far. i managed to keep from busting my wallet this year, as i had all my holiday shopping done, but it was tough, especially when i came across the booth for Wazo jewelry. His stuff was just incredible, i wanted to buy everything he had. there is also a section displaying the works of students from various artisinal programs around Montreal and they also have an exhibition area where you can vote for your favorite piece of artwork. so! if you like artsy and/or craftsy stuff, make a trip down there before tomorrow night, when they close their doors for another year.

    Dear everyone,

Does anyone know of a performance of the Nutcracker that would be a bit "less expensive" than les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal? I'm a little spoiled, used to local performances costing $15 (albeit students) and les GBCdM is ranging from "$29 - $95". If it were just for me I would probably make the sacrifice for the amazingly beautiful production that their video clip promesses. However, I am hoping to be able to treat my family of 5 to a little christmas entertainment.

    Suggestions?

    expozine parties?

    Hey Montreal!

I used to live in your city, but now I'm in Toronto. Next week I'm coming back to visit and to sell stuff at Expozine. I'm wondering, are there any post-expo parties or events planned? I'm a nice girl and won't wreck your house/venue/roof.

Is anybody else selling stuff at Expozine?

    Healing Oasis: Guided Meditation
Tuesday, October 24th. at 7:30 pm

It's a "crazy world" when so many of us become disconnected from our source and centre. How do we become reconnected so that we are nourished rather than fragmented? For Sharon Moon, minister of Cedar Park United Church , the object is to reintegrate body, mind and spirit. She meditates, using biblical imagery for healing, for spiritual growth, for transformation and for listening for the Holy Deep within.
